The Organising Committee SESSION THEME The session theme is Regional Development, supported by the motto “Small Regions-Great Ideas. Changing Thessaly-Changing Europe”. The theme of the session will act as the general direction for many of the committee topics, as well as the initiative for events during the session. The theme suggests Thessaly as a place where new ideas are born that could potentially affect decision-making on both a local and a European scale. Thessaly is a region with a competitive economy, rich history and traditions. The session will seek opportunities to bring about positive changes to the region of Thessaly and, as a consequence, to Europe. The theme will focus on two distinct prospects: a) Civil Rights and Lib- erties in view of the proclamation of 2013 as the “Year of Citizens” and due to the example of the fights of the people at Kileler, a small village in Thessaly that changed the way Greece views human rights. b) Rural Development, reinforcement of rural economy and small en- terprises. 2 SESSION PROGRAMME FRIDAY, 2ND AUGUST Arrival of delegates All delegates are expected to arrive at Trikala by 20:00. SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN RURAL THessALY, 1850–1940 Fenia Lekka, Dina Moustani and George Gassias Abstract: This article is part of a research project on the transformations that took place between 1850 and 1940 in the province of Thessaly, an extensive rural region of the Balkan Peninsula. It focuses on the changes in the economic, social and demographic levels, highlighting the interrelation of these changes in rural Thessaly from the promulgation of the Land Law (1858) under the Ottoman Tanzimat reforms to the annexation of Thessaly and the implementation of extensive land reforms in the 1920s by the Greek state. Studies concerning the – predominantly rural – province of Thessaly during the nineteenth century mostly consider its annexation in 1881 by Greece as a milestone in the transfer of landed property from the Ottoman Empire to the Greek Kingdom, the acquisition of Ottoman landed estates by capitalists from the Greek diaspora from 1878 to 1881 being an essential element in this narrative. This article shall focus, firstly, on this transition, suggesting that the annexation was – in fact – a process that lasted for over a decade in terms of the province’s demographic transformation, which concluded with – as well as brought about – the gradual religious homogenisation of the population of Thessaly. Secondly, we shall study the role and profile of landowners, a process that led us to the realisation that even when the 1917 land reform was announced, a significant number ofM uslims were still among the owners of Thessalian estates, whereas Greek landowners belonging to or descending from the circle of capitalists of the Greek diaspora were relatively few in number.
