The obstacles in Cannes are a little different: beige-suited guards who dismiss premiere attendees lacking proper shoes or bowties; hordes of star-gazers amassed outside the seaside luxury hotels; movie audiences with famously fiery tastes that can make or break a film’s debut; and even fellow filmmakers competing for the festival’s prestigious trophy, the Palme d’Or. “I used to race cars and motorcycles,” says direc- tor David Cronenberg. “I’m competitive enough that if you put me on the race track, I’m going to want to win. • A Conversation with Sarah Harmer by Frank Goodman (4/2006, Puremusic.Com)
A Conversation with Sarah Harmer by Frank Goodman (4/2006, Puremusic.com) We're very happy to bring you an interview with Sarah Harmer this month. She's an artist I've been enjoying and actually pursuing for some time. While she's not exactly a household name yet in the States, she enjoys a wide popularity in her native Canada. There she won a Juno in 2005, in the Best Adult Alternative CD category, for her superb work All Of Our Names. She first came to light nationally with a group that sometimes included her sister Mary on bass, called Weeping Tile. Sarah grew up on a farm on what's called the Niagara Escarpment in Southern Ontario, which has everything to do with this record. Although it is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the escarpment is lethally threatened by the interests of the aggregate industry (sand, gravel, and shale). Sarah and her cohorts set off in June of 2005 on an "I Love The Escarpment" Tour. They hiked, climbed, and caved their way through the land, and played all the communities along the way. The group donated all the proceeds from the shows to a volunteer research and advocacy organization that the artist helped to form, PERL, Protecting Escarpment Rural Land. At the end of that tour, they went into the studio and recorded I'm a Mountain. Solo and with Weeping Tile (for which she was the principal writer and lead vocalist), Sarah's music has included folk and jazz, country, alternative rock and pop. The JUNO record, All of Our Names, was a masterful folk pop record that rang with greatness from first exposure.

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Mongrel Media Presents THE YEAR DOLLY PARTON WAS MY MOM A Film by Tara Johns (95min., Canada, 2011) Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith 1028 Queen Street West Star PR Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-488-4436 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html GENERAL INFO SYNOPSIS It’s 1976 and Elizabeth is just your average suburban 11-year-old praying for adolescence to arrive when she discovers her whole life has been a lie. With only her imagination to guide her, Elizabeth runs away in search of her true identity. Her adoptive mother Marion is then forced to break out of the carefully constructed “truth” she’s been clinging to and go after her daughter. This leads to a cathartic cross- country trek by a mother searching for a daughter who’s searching for a mother – both of them really searching for themselves…. The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom is a poignant, sometimes funny, very female, coming of age story that explores the tension between creating identity and finding it within… CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS Elizabeth Gray Flat as the prairies with no change on the horizon, 11 year-old Elizabeth Alison Gray is officially in developmental distress. Adding to that is the knowledge that she’s already spent more than a decade on this planet and still has not discovered what – if anything – she has to contribute to it.

  • Edited and with an Introduction by Olivia Carter Mather and J
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 4 Issue 2 (Fall 2002) Edited and with an Introduction by Olivia Carter Mather and J. Lester Feder Introduction Why Now? A Millenial Folk Revival? 1. The success of the Coen Brothers’ 2000 movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and its Appalachian- and Bluegrass-inflected soundtrack seemed to come out of the blue. When considered alongside other artifacts of popular culture from recent years—the re-release of the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music, Moby’s album Play, and the popularity of the Dixie Chicks, to name a few—it is clear that the new interest in music drawing on “folk” or “roots” influences has obvious precedents. At the same time, O Brother’s popularity has spawned a wide array of “follow up” products and projects: new folk anthologies, books, concert tours, TV series, documentaries, women- in-bluegrass collections, soundtracks, and even church musicals. Taken as a package, it seems we are in the midst of a “folk revival”—a period when popular (and corporate) culture looks to music, art, and other cultural forms that are seen as “folkloric,” treated as if created by communities of music-makers without the interference or mediation of technology. 2. There have been many previous folk revivals in this century, the most (in)famous of which occurred in the late 50s and early 60s, including performers such as Pete Seeger and Joan Baez and collectors such as Alan Lomax. The 60s revival—whose presence is very much felt in the ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 4 Issue 2 (Fall 2002) current moment—itself looked to a revival of the early twentieth century, when collectors such as Cecil Sharp, Olive Dame Campbell, and John Lomax (Alan’s father) headed into the rural parts of the United States in search of “authentic” indigenous expressions.
