Dismukes, the 29-year old freshman legislator had difficulties raising money reporting less than $15,000 last quarter. By comparison, Coleman led fundraising in the third quarter with almost $500,000 raised and loaned his campaign another half million.

Local officials ​ ​ and health experts have warned that infections could continue to spiral out of control unless governors issue public health measures that apply to everyone. The resurgence of the virus, ​ ​ ​ particularly in the Sun Belt, has left some mayors of hotspot cities frustrated with their governors over their lack of control to require residents to wear masks or stay at home. “The rising tide of coronavirus cases in the U.S. South and West, coming four months into the outbreak, emerged amid a patchwork of often confusing or conflicting rules across government that have proved inconsistent and often difficult to enforce, making the pandemic harder to halt,” the Wall Street Journal reports. ​ ​ Alabama A bipartisan group of 10 mayors from Alabama’s largest cities have argued in favor of a statewide mask order, telling Gov. Kay Ivey (R) that it was necessary as cases have climbed steadily in the state. Ivey has previously dismissed the idea. Her coronavirus orders say only ​ ​ that the state’s two largest counties, Jefferson and Mobile, can be more stringent than the state.

Meanwhile, tragic events have precipitated urgent cries for long-overdue responses to the systemic racism that has prevented the country from living up to its ideals. In this moment of crisis, so many state and local leaders have stepped up to off er bold and creative ways to protect their communities from the immediate fall-out of the pandemic, while understanding that the goal of the recovery must not be to restore America to its pre-pandemic condition, but rather to emerge as a more just, prosperous, and secure nation than when the pandemic began. Every day in our cities and towns, we use all the tools at our disposal to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others. But we are in desperate need of the tools only the federal government can provide. We must close the gaping loopholes in our federal laws that have allowed illegal guns to flood our communities for far too long. For this reason, we, the undersigned mayors from across the country, call on U.S. Senators to pass background checks legislation now. Background checks are the backbone of any comprehensive gun violence prevention strategy; they keep our communities safer and are associated with reduced rates of firearm homicide, suicide, and firearm trafficking. We know background checks work and stop sales to prohibited purchasers every day. Since 1994, background checks have blocked over 3.5 million sales to violent criminals and other prohibited people. However, current federal law only requires a background check when a gun seller is a licensed dealer, leaving all other sales, like those negotiated online or at gun shows between perfect strangers, unregulated and unchecked.
