A New Species of the Genus Xiphophorus H ECKEL 1848

By MANFRED ScHARTL, & JoHANNES HoRsT ScHRÖDER, Maninsried, Neuherberg. With 7 figures and 3 tables. Abstract: Xiphophorus meyeri n. sp. is described as an endemiete Muzquiz, Coahuila, Mexico. It appears tobe the northernmost species of the genus. The new species is related to X. couchianus and X. gordoni, but differs morphologically from those by dorsal fin ray number, by the expression of some gonopodial features and most markedly by the appearance of macromelanophores or tr-melanophores. Introduction. Xiphophorus HECKEL 1848 is one of the most studied groups of fish, ranging from molecular biology and genetics to morphology and ethology. Phylogenetically, xiphophorin fish may be regarded to date as being still in a very active stage of speciation (ANDERS & ScHARTL 1984; MoRIZOT & SICILIANO 1982). Taxonomy has placed the different forms of Xiphophorus into 17 species [ROSEN 1979, MEYER & ScHARTL 1979), six of which are endemics. However, the ranking of some taxa as species (e. g. X. couchianus (GIRARD 1859) and gordoni MrLLER & MINCKLEY 1903; X. variatus (MEEK 1904) and evelynae RosEN 1960] gives the false impression of a higher degree of genetic distance, which is not con firmed by tbe wide range of reproductive compatibility between different taxa (at least under Iabaratory conditions), by the occurrence of natural hybrids (MEYER 1983), and by evaluating genetic distances on the protein Ievel (MoruzOT & SICILIANO, 1982) and the DNA-level (ScHARTL unpubl.). -

Monosapyga clavicornis (Linnaeus, 1758) is recorded for the first time in Lazio and Abruzzo, Polochrum repandum Spinola, 1806 in Abruzzo, and Sapygina decemguttata (Jurine, 1807) in Veneto. Due to insufficient sampling efforts in Italy, all the Italian species of Sapygidae should be currently considered as Data Deficient (DD) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. Biology Leafcutting bees, as their name implies, use 0.25 to 0.5 inch circular pieces of leaves they neatly cut from plants to construct nests. They construct cigar-like nests that contain several cells. Each cell contains a ball or loaf of stored pollen and a single egg. Therefore, each cell will produce a Figure 1. Individuals moving to new areas usually 18 confront a different set of biotic and abiotic variables, and most dispersed individuals do not 19 survive. However, if they are capable of surviving and adapting to the new conditions, they may 20 establish self-sufficient populations, colonise the new areas, and even spread into nearby 21 locations (Mack et al. 2000). In doing so, they will produce ecological transformations in the 22 new areas, which may lead to changes in other species’ populations and communities, speciation 23 and the formation of new ecosystems (Wilson et al. 2009). 24 25 Human extra-range dispersals since the Pleistocene have produced important distribution 26 changes across species of all taxonomic groups. Along our prehistory and history, we have aided 27 other species’ extra-range dispersals either by deliberate translocations or by ecological 28 facilitation due to habitat changes or modification of ecological relationships (Boivin et al. 29 2016). -
