Question #2: Thursday, October 31 is Halloween. How does the celebration of Halloween reflect American culture? Draw an image or write a written description of your favorite Halloween costume and briefly discussion its connection to American culture.

Since Thursday, October 31 is Halloween and most high schools do something special on that day, have students discuss the tradition of Halloween and how it is celebrated differently in the than it is in some parts of the world. For example, the Day of the Dead/All Saints Day in which is November 1. You can also ask your students what the cultural significance is of their Halloween costumes, etc….How the celebration of this holiday has been enhanced and modified through popular culture, the media, etc…. For example, the new Halloween movie remake, Friday the 13th movies, the distribution of candy. Finally, you can discuss with your students the controversy over current events’ themed costumes recently discussed in the media and whether or not they would consider these costumes offensive.

*Not sure if I would count Guy Fawkes Day as a Halloween celebration (even if Mr. Keller does teach AP Euro) but most of this article is pretty relevant J

The following article on Guy Fawkes Day from TIME magazine discusses the origins of the greeting “You Guys” which can definitely connect to the language part of the course J https://time.com/5688255/you- guys/?fbclid=IwAR3hRNuMfXwTvOBbs9Mc7S72fZySjr7WExeIE_nzmI1vvlxTNwFMeZXgwSA

Students can also view the film Girl Rising and look at the associated website to do the same as with Half the Sky: http://girlrising.com/ The segment on the girls in Nepal is the clip I show my students @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk2Q7WLzn0s (12:32)
