E-mail address : [email protected] ABSTRACT This study carried out in Lake Tuzla in northeast Cappadocia (Central Anatolia- Kayseri-Palas Plain) aimed primarily to determine changes in paleovegetation of mid- to late- Holocene in the vicinity of Lake Tuzla and factors affecting these changes. A secondary objective was to determine paleoenvironmental conditions during the settlement period of Kültepe (Karum-Kanis), an important archaeological site in the region. Fossil pollen analysis was carried out on a sediment core 337 cm long representing the period from the present day extending back to 5080 ± 30 years. Changes in paleoclimatic conditions and paleovegetation were identified. From changes in the vegetation, thMANUSCRIPTe climatic changes determined were dry in the periods 3200-3000 BP, 2050-1450 BP, and 1120-850 BP; and humidity in the periods 1400-1115 BP and 1400-1700 BP. Alterations to the vegetation structure between 3230 and 1155 BP reveal the effects of the Bey şehir Occupation Phase (BOP). According to Lake Tuzla data, the effect of BOP was relatively less than that of Lake Nar. After the end of BOP, pine forests grew in the area around Lake Tuzla. The vegetation consisted of Pinus and Quercus in AP (arboreal pollen) and Artemisia , Amaranthaceae and Poaceae in NAP (non-arboreal pollen). The density of Artemisia , Amaranthaceae and Poaceae taxa suggests that steppe vegetation was dominant in the surroundings of Lake Tuzla. Introduction Anatolia is characterized by human-induced vegetation change and a complex climatic history (Bottema and Woldring, 1990; Kaniewski, 2007; Riehl and Marinova, 2008; Bakker et al., 2013). Pollen analysis is the most useful method for evaluating human-induced vegetation change and the climatic history of Anatolia from the temporal perspective and on a spatial scale (Behre, 1990; Eastwood, 1997; Vermoere, 2004; England, 2006; Şenkul, 2014). The formation of vegetation in Anatolia revealed by pollen analysis, and factors such as human impact and climate affecting these changes, enable the reinterpretation of environmental conditions (Bakker et al., 2011). Furthermore, the climatic and human impacts effective on vegetation also help us to understand changes occurring in the socio-cultural structure (Allcock, 2017). The extent, nature and duration of climatic changes affecting natural environmental conditions vary from region to region (Miebach, 2016). Notably, the 4200, 2800, 1400 BP Cold Climate periods and the Little Ice Age (Bond et al., 1997) occurring in Holocene, together with the climatic cycles termed the Roman and Medieval Warm periods (Free and Robock, 1999; Crowley and Lowery, 2000; Luterbacher et al., 2001; Mann, 2002; Bradley, 2003; Cronin et al., 2003; Bakker et al., 2011; Wang et al., 2012), were all effective on the natural environment, inhabitants and human activityMANUSCRIPT. Kültepe (Kani ş Karum), the most important ancient settlement in Cappadocia, is the largest Early Bronze Age settlement in Anatolia (Kulako ğlu et al., 2013). This settlement became an important trade and cultural center in the period of the Assyrian Trade Colonies (1950-1700 BC), during which commercial and cultural relations with Mesopotamia developed (U ğuryol and Kulako ğlu, 2013). Kültepe, important historically and for its strategic location in Cappadocia, is of particular significance since it is situated close to the Lake Tuzla (23 km to the northeast). Regarding Cappadocia as a whole, several fossil pollen studies have included Lake Tuzla (Bottema et al., 1993-1994; Woldring, 2001; Roberts et al., 2001; England, 2006; Roberts et al., 2016;ACCEPTED Do ğan, 2017). However, the exact age-based chronology of fossil pollen data from Lake Tuzla, representing the northeast of the region, has not yet been revealed in detail (Bottema et al., 1993-1994). In order to gain a holistic view of the fossil pollen record of Cappadocia region, it is difficult to use data from Lake Tuzla due to the lack of information about its age. Therefore, this study aimed to solve the problem of chronology by examining the record of Lake Tuzla in the north-east of Kayseri-Palas Plain (Memi ş, 2017). Thus, a data 3 ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT set was compiled reflecting the Holocene paleoenvironmental history of the Cappadocia region. This study is important in terms of perceiving the effect of changes in paleovegetation and palaeoclimate on human activity during the settlement period of Kültepe and the influence of mankind on the environment. For this reason, the aim of this study was to determine the paleovegetation changes of the Lake Tuzla environment and the factors affecting these changes in the light of fossil pollen analysis. Fossil pollen data were used as the data record, making a significant contribution to the construction of paleoecology in Cappadocia and revealing the environmental factors affecting the paleoenvironment of the Kültepe settlement. 2. Study Area Lake Tuzla (1130 masl) is included in a closed basin located to the southeast of Kızılırmak valley between Mt. Akda ğlar to the north and Mt. Korumaz (1907 masl) to the south in Central Anatolia (Fig. 1). The rocks exposed around Lake Tuzla, from oldest to youngest, are metamorphic rocks of Paleozoic age, ophiolitic mélange, sedimentary (clastic, carbonate) and plutonic rocks of Mesozoic age, lacustrine carbonate and volcanic rocks of Cenozoic age, and alluvial deposits of Quaternary age (Fig. 2). Most of these rock groups (except the Paleozoic metamorphics) are exposed MANUSCRIPTin the catchment area of Lake Tuzla. The closed basin developed in the Central Anatolian Fault System (Koçyi ğit and Beyhan, 1998). The Central Anatolian Fault System is approximately 730 km long and 2–80 km wide, a northeast–trending neotectonic structure in the nature of sinistral strike-slip faulting (Koçyi ğit and Beyhan, 1998; Koçyi ğit and Erol, 2001; Koçyi ğit and Do ğan, 2016). It resulted from the reactivation and propagation of an older paleotectonic structure, the so- called “Ecemi ş corridor” (Blumenthal, 1941), running both north-northeast and southwest across the Inner Tauride Suture during Quaternary (Koçyi ğit and Do ğan, 2016). Therefore, the study area has been affected by a strike-slip neotectonic regime during Quaternary (Koçyi ğit and Beyhan, 1998; Koçyi ğit and Erol, 2001; Koçyi ğit and Do ğan, 2016).

The age composition of the samples was from I to VIII. The length–weight relationship was calculated as W = 0.0181 TL 2.9689 for females and W = 0.0278 TL 2.8507 for males. The total lengths were between 17.1 and 69.2 cm, and the total weights were found to be between 86 and 5473 g. The majority of the individuals (48.12%) were between 46.0 and 55.0 cm length groups. The von Bertalanffy growth equation were found as L∞ = 86.80 cm, K = 0.189, t0 = -0.396 for females and L∞ = 85.34 cm, K = 0.175, t0 = -0.468 for males. The growth performance index was also estimated as Ф′ = 7.260 for females and Ф′ = 7.151 for males. The mean condition factor was found as 1.582 for females and 1.572 for males. A total of 31 species comprising 15 Rotifera (48%), 11 Cladocera (36%), and 5 Copepoda (16%) were recorded. Keratella quadrata, Daphnia longispina and Acanthodiaptomus denticornis were the common species during the study period. Humphreys & Waddington have recently suggested that the Biblical account involving Joshua’s control of the sun and moon ( Joshua 10. 1-15) was inspired by an annular eclipse. Going by the text as given, it is shown that the explanation as an eclipse, whether annular or total, is unacceptable on calendrical, philological and physical grounds alike. The story’s possible historicity cannot be properly evaluated until it is placed in two cross-cultural and sometimes overlapping contexts: ritual utterances before battle designed to divine the outcome or provoke divine intervention in it and the mythology of solar arrests, reversals and radical alterations of the length of day. ‘Solar magic’ emerges as a common archaic practice in real life as well as legend. Some literary parallels are cited which have never before been linked with Joshua. All things considered, the tale may have originated as an embellished memory of some extraordinary natural event other than an eclipse, coinciding with a historical battle. A tempting possibility is the aerial passage of a fragmenting bolide, producing a meteorite shower and nocturnal illumination. Introduction Despite centuries of speculation by scholars and scientists alike, the famous Biblical miracle involving Joshua’s control of the sun and moon has resisted a satisfactory explanation in secular terms. The incident is set in the early stages of the Israelite conquest of Canaan, just after the invaders have destroyed the cities of Jericho and Ai and acquired Gibeon. The fingerling fish (fry) were restocked approximately 250,000,000 in natural lakes, dam lakes and ponds for fisheries between years of 1979 and 2005. Canakkale has rich freshwater potential with 7 major rivers (Büyükdere, Karamenderes stream, Kavak brook, Kocacay stream, Sarıcay stream, Tuzla brook, Umurbey brook), 7 Dam Lakes (Atikhisar, Zeytinlikoy, Bayramic, Bakacak, Tayfur, Umurbey and Yenice-Gönen Dam lakes). In the studies, it has been determined that 15 fish species belonging to 6 families (Anguillidae, Atherinidae, Salmonidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae and Poecilidae) can be found in reservoirs. Fish restocking of the activities of the reservoir until today approximately 1,120,000 (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) is introduced. In this study, the activity of Canakkale province in the fish restocking and reservoir exploiting possibilities were discussed in view of reservoir fisheries potential which is used insufficiently today. Received: June 2012 Accepted: December 2012 Abstract This study was carried out to determine seasonal variation and zooplankton community structure in Karataş Lake, Southern Turkey. Zooplankton samples were collected seasonally between 2002 and 2003 in two stations using a zooplankton net of 55-µm mesh size. A total of 42 taxa were identified, including 19 taxa (45.2 %) Rotifera, 16 taxa (38.1 %) Cladocera, and 7 taxa (16.7 %). Copepoda. Among them, Keratella quadrata, Asplanchna priodonta from Rotifera, Daphnia longispina, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Chydorus sphaericus, Coranatella rectangula from Cladocera, and Eudiaptomus drieschi, Eucyclops speratus from Copepoda were dominant species. Spring and autumn seasons were found to be the most similar by using Sorenson index value. Abstract This study reports the first recorded instance of Atherina boyeri (Risso, 1810) in the Bayramiç Reservoir, located on the Karamenderes Stream. Since 2005, ichthyological researches have been carried out in the Bayramiç Reservoir by various researchers, but none of them have noted the existence of A. boyeri in this reservoir. In the field studies conducted between May 2016 and July 2017, a total of 98 A. boyeri specimens was caught. In these samplings, a 70 m long and 2 m wide beach seine net with 10 mm a mesh size was used. Although a small number of A. boyeri was caught during the first observation in October 2016, more individuals were observed in July 2017. The fork length of the A. boyeri observed was between 2.7-8.8 cm and the weight ranged between 0.06-4.31 g. The bimodal length distribution of the specimens indicates that there have been multiple incidents of adult specimens entering the reservoir and that these individuals have given birth to new offspring. The translocation of A. boyeri into the Bayramiç Reservoir might have been due to unauthorized introduction by fishermen or through illegal release by anglers as fish bait.

Reed Francesc Mesquita-Joanes Huw I. Griffiths Abstract Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae; single-celled algae) and ostracods (Ostracoda; shelled microcrustacea) are known for their sensitivity to salinity. In palaeolimnology, the potential has yet to be tested for quantifying past salinity, lake level, and by inference, climate change, by application of multiple-indicator transfer functions. We used weighted averaging techniques to derive diatom (n = 91; r2 = 0.92) and ostracod (n = 53; r2 = 0.83) conductivity transfer functions from modern diatom, ostracod and water chemistry data collected in lakes of central, western and northern Turkey. Diatoms were better represented across the full gradient than ostracods, at intermediate levels of conductivity in particular, but both transfer functions were statistically robust. Because transfer functions are not infallible, we further tested the strength and simplicity of salinity response and the potential for identifying characteristic associations of diatom and ostracod taxa in different parts of the salinity gradient, to improve palaeoclimate reconstruction. We identified a subset of 51 samples that contained both diatoms and ostracods, collected at the same time from the same habitat. We used Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis of a combined diatom-ostracod data set, transformed to achieve numerical equivalence, to explore distributions in more detail. A clear ecological threshold was apparent at ~3 g l−1 salinity, rather than at 5 g l−1, the boundary used by some workers, equating to the oligosaline-mesosaline boundary.
