Sanchiz (*) RESUMEN Durante el periodo 1978-1994 se han descrito cerca de 2.000 especies animales nue- vas para la ciencia en territorio ibérico-balear. Se presenta como apéndice un listado completo de las especies (1978-1993), ordenadas taxonómicamente, así como de sus referencias bibliográficas. Como tendencias generales en este proceso de inventario de la biodiversidad se aprecia un incremento moderado y sostenido en el número de taxones descritos, junto a una cada vez mayor contribución de los autores españoles. Es cada vez mayor el número de especies publicadas en revistas que aparecen en el Science Citation Index, así como el uso del idioma inglés. La mayoría de los phyla, clases u órdenes mues- tran gran variación en la cantidad de especies descritas cada año, dado el pequeño núme- ro absoluto de publicaciones. Los insectos son claramente el colectivo más estudiado, pero se aprecia una disminución en su importancia relativa, asociada al incremento de estudios en grupos poco conocidos como los nematodos. November 1986 Abstract This paper presents a new phylogenetic estimate of isopod crustaceans of the suborder Asellota with the aim of clarifying the evolution of the superfamily Janiroidea, a large and diverse group inhabiting all aqueous habitats. The phylogenetic analysis is based on a morphological evaluation of characters used in past classifications, as well as several new characters. The evolutionary polarity of the charac- ters was determined by outgroup analysis. The characters employed were from the pleopods, the copulatory organs, the first walking legs, and the cephalon. The resulting character data set was analyzed with numerical phylogenetic computer programs to find one most parsimonious clado- gram, which is translated into a classification using the sequencing convention. -

Annelida, traditionally divided into Polychaeta and Clitellata, is an evolutionary ancient and ecologically important group today usually considered to be monophyletic. However, there is a long debate regarding the in-group relationships as well as the direction of evolutionary changes within the group. This debate is correlated to the extraordinary evolutionary diversity of this group. Although annelids may generally be characterised as organisms with multiple repetitions of identically organised segments and usually bearing certain other characters such as a collagenous cuticle, chitinous chaetae or nuchal organs, none of these are present in every subgroup. This is even true for the annelid key character, segmentation. The first morphology-based cladistic analyses of polychaetes showed Polychaeta and Clitellata as sister groups. -

Mascaró2,4* Cave shrimps of the Typhlatya genus are common and widespread in fresh, brackish and marine groundwater throughout the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). These species are ideal models to test niche partitioning within sympatric species in oligotrophic systems. Nevertheless, their food sources remain unidentifed, and despite their frequency and functional importance, distribution and abundance patterns of these species within caves have not been fully recognized. Here, we describe the abundance of three Typhlatya species in diferent temporal and spatial scales, investigate changes in water conditions, and potential sources of carbon as an indication of food origin. Species composition and abundance varied markedly in space and time revealing patterns that difered from one system to another and in relation to environmental parameters. Isotope analysis showed that each species refects a particular δ13C and Δ14C fngerprint, suggesting they feed in diferent proportions from the available carbon sources. Overall, our fndings suggest a niche partitioning of habitat and feeding sources amongst the three Typhlatya species investigated, where environmental characteristics and physiological diferences could play an important role governing their distribution patterns. Te lack of photosynthesis in caves and the resulting limitation in food sources is one of the strongest selection pressures and drivers of evolution for life in caves1. Competition for nutrients in oligotrophic environments, such as anchialine ecosystems—defned as subterranean estuaries that extend inland to the limit of seawater penetration2, certainly requires a unique set of specialization traits that allow for niche partitioning amongst stygobionts (aquatic species strictly bound to the subterranean habitat).
