In addition to No. 6 Tomas Berdych, the only Americans remaining, No. 13 John Isner and Donald Young, look to advance to the fourth round for the first time since 2011. Isner reached the quarters and Young the 4R in ’11. On Ashe, Federer enters his 10th match against Philipp Kohlschreiber confidently. He’s dropped just nine games through two matches this week, his lowest total ever in the first two rounds of the US Open. He hasn’t been broken this summer in seven hard court matches, holding all 72 service games. Federer is also 9-0 vs. Kohlschreiber and 18-0 against Germans at Grand Slams since falling to Tommy Haas at the 2002 Australian Open. Kohlschreiber has lost his last 13 matches against Top 10 opponents. Under the Ashe lights, 2012 US Open champion Murray meets No. 30 seed Thomaz Bellucci after rallying from two sets down for the eighth time in his career against Adrian Mannarino on Thursday. The last time Murray mounted a two-set comeback was in the Wimbledon quarter-finals two years ago. He went on to win the tournament. For history to repeat itself, Murray must first beat Bellucci, who prevailed in their only prior match at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid in 2011. On Armstrong, No. 1 American Isner takes on Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic for the first time. Isner lost to Kohlschreiber in the third round each of the last three years, but this time around he’s taking on the 22-year-old Auckland champion. Vesely is one of six first-time winners on the ATP World Tour this year. The No. 13 seed has not been broken in his last five matches at the US Open dating back to last year, a streak of 83 service games. Finishing the day’s play on Armstrong is Wawrinka, who has not lost a set this week despite being broken five times. One of 10 players over the age of 30 in the third round, Wawrinka is attempting to capture a second Grand Slam title after his 30th birthday, something no player has done since Andre Agassi won the Australian Open in 2001 and ‘03. In today’s match, Wawrinka meets the lowest-ranked player in the third round: World No. 107 Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium. He is appearing in his first major third round match. On Grandstand, No. 12 Richard Gasquet, a semi-finalist two years ago, looks to reach the 4R at the US Open for the sixth time. Gasquet is 5-1 lifetime (3-0 on hard) against No. 24 seed Bernard Tomic. He is looking to join countrymen Chardy, Paire and Tsonga in the fourth round. There were three Frenchmen in the 4R last year. There never has been four in 4R here in the Open Era. In the next match, No. 22 Viktor Troicki meets Young. On Court 17, No. 6 Tomas Berdych tries to level the head-to-head against No. 31 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who leads 3-2. In the next match on, No. 15 seed Kevin Anderson looks for his third win (2-0) against No. 20 Dominic Thiem, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday. 2015 US OPEN Saturday, September 5, 2015 Page 2 of 21 [2] Roger Federer (SUI) vs. [29] Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) Federer Leads 9-0 05 Halle (Germany) Grass QF Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 08 Halle (Germany) Grass F Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 09 Doha (Qatar) Hard QF Roger Federer 6-2 7-6(6) 09 Wimbledon (Great Britain) Grass R32 Roger Federer 6-3 6-2 6-7(5) 6-1 10 Halle (Germany) Grass QF Roger Federer 7-5 6-3 11 ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo (Monaco) Clay R32 Roger Federer 6-2 6-1 13 ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati (U.S.A.)
