Press Contact: Lauren Sklar Phone: 646-336-3745; Email [email protected] Alton Brown Biography Although Alton Brown spent plenty of time in his mom’s kitchen growing up, his real interest in food sparked in college when he discovered that girls who said “no” to dates sometimes said “yes” if he offered to cook for them. His social life never ignited, but the food spark did and after spending a decade behind the camera in the TV industry, he headed to culinary school in hopes of one day creating a new kind of cooking show. Good Eats , the show that Brown would go on to wrote, produce, and host ran for 13 years on Food Network before making the move to Cooking Channel where it airs to this day. Combining food science, pop culture, skit humor, innovative cooking, and the occasional belching puppet, Good Eats has millions of fans and garnered a coveted Peabody Award for broadcast excellence in 2007. Brown has also served as the culinary commentator of Iron Chef America for 11 seasons, and hosted The Next Iron Chef for 5. Brown took home the James Beard Award for top food show host in 2011, which bookends nicely the one his first book nabbed in 2002. Speaking of books, he’s written 7 the last three of which made the New York Times Best Sellers List. In 2012 he joined the cast of Food Network Star as a mentor and yes...one of his team members won. David Rose Chef David Rose was raised with a very diverse and curious palate. He was born in New Jersey to Jamaican parents that were professional chefs. Chef David’s culinary interest led him to enroll at the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts College (Tucker, GA), where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. Living in Atlanta for more than a decade, Chef Rose finds inspiration in his surroundings and identifies as a Southern chef. He creatively reinterprets classic Southern fare by incorporating the refinement of his French culinary training, his signature bold flavors, and the occasional flair from his family's Jamaican recipes. Becca Kleinstein on Martha Stewart Yes, you read that correctly – I chose Martha Stewart as the leader I admire. I’m guessing that quizzical look on your face has something to do with the fact that she spent 5 months in federal prison, or that she is known for being a ruthless tyrant in the professional domain, or even the fact that it is very publicly known that she and her daughter don’t get along (her daughter even wrote a book about their poor relationship!). However, Martha Stewart possesses several leadership traits that I admire and she has been able to harmonize all four of her domains. Marth Kostyra was born in 1941, and was raised in New Jersey by her middle class parents with her four brothers and sisters. Her knack for crafts was obvious from her childhood as she learned crafting, gardening, sewing, cooking, and preserve-jarring from her close-knit Polish American family. Her planning was also evident in her youth. She frequently babysat for the children of Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees and organized birthday parties for the four boys. Martha won partial scholarship to Barnard College and modeled on the side to pay expenses. She initially intended to major in chemistry, but switched to art, European history, and architectural history. She married then law student Andrew Stewart after her sophomore year in college, and after taking a year off from school, earned her degree. Martha had her only child, Alexis, in 1965, and worked as model and stockbroker on Wall Street until 1973. -

Beard nurtured a genera- tion of American chefs and cookbook authors who have changed the way we eat. James Andrew Beard was born on May 5, 1903, in Portland, Oregon, to Elizabeth and John Beard. His mother, an independent English woman passionate about food, ran a boarding house. His father worked at Portland’s Customs House. The family spent summers at the beach at Gearhart, Oregon, fishing, gathering shellfish and wild berries, and cooking meals with whatever was caught. He studied briefly at Reed College in Portland in 1923, but was expelled. Reed claimed it was due to poor scholastic performance, but Beard maintained it was due to his homosexuality. Beard then went on the road with a theatrical troupe. He lived abroad for several years study- ing voice and theater but returned to the United States for good in 1927. Although he kept trying to break into the theater and movies, by 1935 he needed to supplement what was a very non-lucra- Biography tive career and began a catering business. THE FIRST FORTY YEARS INTRODUCTION by Susan Stamberg Shiny little platters. Not even five inches across. How could they possibly contain the soundtrack of four decades? How could the phone calls, the encounters, the danger, the desperation, the exhilaration and big, big laughs from two score years be compressed onto a handful of CDs? If you’ve lived with NPR, as so many of us have for so many years, you’ll be astonished at how many of these reports and conversations and reveries you remember—or how many come back to you (like familiar songs) after hearing just a few seconds of sound. And you’ll be amazed by how much you’ve missed—loyal as you are, you were too busy that day, or too distracted, or out of town, or giving birth (guess that falls under the “too distracted” category). Many of you have integrated NPR into your daily lives; you feel personally connected with it. NPR has gotten you through some fairly dramatic moments. Not just important historical events, but personal moments as well. I’ve been told that a woman’s terror during a CAT scan was tamed by the voice of Ira Flatow on Science Friday being piped into the dreaded scanner tube. So much of life is here. War, from the horrors of Vietnam to the brutalities that evanescent medium—they came to life, then disappeared. Now, of Iraq. Politics, from the intrigue of Watergate to the drama of the Anita on these CDs, all the extraordinary people and places and sounds Hill-Clarence Thomas controversy.
