1 Public speaking competition Wilmslow High School is rapidly establishing itself as a ‘force to be reckoned with’ in the art of public speaking, and the recent sequence of fine results was continued on Wednesday evening in the ESU Churchill National Public Speaking Competition.

Our team, consisting of Mia Basma Jaber, Grace Wilson and Jess Walter secured an excellent victory over seven other schools and now progress to the regional final.

The team of Year 10 students all spoke with precision, intelligence and enthusiasm and won a very strong heat. Grace presented an excellent speech on ‘What is more important in our education: knowledge or skills?’ and responded to difficult questions eloquently and thoughtfully.

5 SPORT

Football A rare week off from senior cup action for the football boys meant they had time to play a friendly five a side tournament at school. This included three senior boys teams and a staff team who went on to be crowned CHAMPIONS!

Before the day the staff squad looked strong including the likes of ex Manchester City boys Paul Dickov and Shaun Goater. However, in the end, due to injury and other commitments it was down to the teaching staff to do it themselves which they managed Hockey with two wins and a draw against much With all weekend fixtures cancelled due to younger, fitter opposition. It just shows the icy conditions, our U19 girls had to wait until importance of experience! Wednesday for some action, at the indoor tournament hosted by King’s Chester. Congratulations to Mr Herriott, Mr Elston, Mr Lightfoot, Mr Finney and Mr Sachro!! Some great performances saw them beat Lymm 2-0 and Queen’s School 2-1 which Badminton meant they qualified for the semi-final. Our U14 boys team of Tom Orr, James and The game was extremely competitive, but Ben Tomlinson and James Morton played Wilmslow scored in the last few minutes to in the U14 National Schools Badminton win the game 1-0 and qualify for the final competition yesterday, beating Fallibroome where they met King’s Chester. All the girls 5-0 (Games) 105-68 (points). The boys played played fantastically well with the score extremely well, using good tactical awareness flattering the hosts somewhat, eventually to overcome the opposition convincingly. The finishing 4-1. Our girls ended up in second next round will be held at the end of January in position out of seven schools. Rudheath.

Rugby On Wednesday the U15s played the next round of the NatWest Plate competition away, against a well drilled Stockport Grammar team. The final score was 24-48, but this does not fully reflect the boys’ performance. Mr Rushton was pleased with his team and, but for a few missed opportunities at pivotal moments, the game could have gone the other way. A disappointing end to the boys’ cup run, but the team has a promising set of players who will undoubtedly go on to represent the school at senior level in the years to come.

6 Cricket The cricket season got underway early, with the U13 boys travelling to Poynton High School to play in the Cheshire indoor cricket tournament, competing against Poynton High, St Ambrose and Fallibroome. The boys were unlucky to lose to Fallibroome by 14 runs in their opening fixture; Fallibroome posted a score of 44 and in reply Wilmslow High School could only manage 30 from our 5 overs.

After learning from their mistakes, we then went on to beat St Ambrose and only narrowly lost out to Poynton, putting us in 3rd place overall, a good learning experience for the boys, with Henry James captaining the team very well and voted player of the tournament.

Next up were the U12 girls, many of them starting their cricketing careers with a triangular tournament between Tytherington, Fallibroome and ourselves. Unfortunately the girls lost their first game to Tytherington as they fell 26 runs short of their required total of 82 even though Emma Jackson and Amelie McKay batted extremely well at the end of our innings. However, the team didn’t let the defeat dampen their enthusiasm and with help from some superb fielding from Bella Pownall, three wickets for Amelie and some big hitting from Emma Jackson in their second game, the girls deservedly beat Fallibroome by 19 runs. A promising start for girls’ cricket at the High School.
