Film funding was always a tail-chasing game of snakes and ladders, but now even the tiniest cracks in doors were sealed shut. My day-job as a producer came to an end as the two films entered their distribution cycle. I needed to pay the bills and I had been working as a lecturer at LJMU for several years. In other disciplines, research drives the pedagogy and vice-versa. Pockets of research funding are available within institutions and I saw a glint of an opportunity. ABSTRACT This thesis proposes a new model for online platforms for independent films. Today, platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, and YouTube are in the face of major industry challenges: more competitors are entering the market; consumers are demanding more diverse content and higher quality service; and cost of content acquisition keeps increasing. In addition, the independent film industry has a fragmented value chain, which makes it challenging for filmmakers to fund and distribute their films. By applying the platforms framework proposed by Prof.

Nearly 40 years ago, a small group of independent film production and sales companies had a vision of the film industry working together for the betterment of the whole. They saw the need for a Hollywood-based international marketplace for film. The American Film Market (AFM) was born out of this entrepreneurial spirit and collaboration of competitors. The first AFM in 1981 was attended by 34 sales companies and hundreds of buyers from all over the world. The AFM was an immediate success, fostering an environment where film financing and buyer discovery could flourish. It quickly became a required stop on the annual calendar of buyers, sellers, and producers worldwide. Today, the AFM is all-inclusive, drawing together the global industry – an amalgamation of film professionals from every corner of the world. It is the destination for all players in the industry to meet face-to-face, do business, and have thoughtful conversations about new films and the everchanging marketplace. The AFM is produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), the trade association that unites Independents around the world and ensures that they are well represented across all issues that impact the independent business. IFTA’s AFM is operated by the industry, for the industry – no other market has this history or connection.

FROM THE CINEMA SCREEN TO THE SMARTPHONE: A study of the impact of media convergence on the distribution sector of American independent cinema 2006 – 2010 Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Hayley Trowbridge. September 2014 (initial submission) April 2015 (final submission) Thesis Number: 20120341 ABSTRACT FROM THE CINEMA SCREEN TO THE SMARTPHONE: A study of the impact of media convergence on the distribution sector of American independent cinema 2006 – 2010 Hayley Trowbridge Film distribution has undoubtedly changed during this contemporary era of media convergence, with a range of innovative practices and methods being adopted across US film and the arrival of new organisations to the industry and distribution sector. This should not suggest that conventional distribution and marketing methods are extinct, or that the traditional gatekeepers of these fields are obsolete. Rather it should indicate a merging of old and new strategies, practices, methods, and organisations, and it is through this fusion of tradition and novelty that today’s complex distribution landscape has emerged. At the forefront of many of these changes has been American independent cinema and as such, the central question posed by this thesis is: how has media convergence impacted on the distribution and marketing of American independent cinema, and how can this impact be understood in terms of wider technological, industrial and sociocultural contexts relevant to the current media landscape? In answering this, this thesis provides a comprehensive re-mapping of the distribution sector of American independent cinema, in terms of the distributors involved and methods and strategies through which films are being released, within this contemporary era of media convergence.
