Mauston, WI

Welcome to St. Paul’s

St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church exists to spread God's Word to ourselves, our community, and our world.

To our friends who have been with us before, we welcome you back. To those who are visiting us for the first time, we extend our most sincere greeting. To those who are seeking a church home, we offer fellowship with a Living Savior, membership in His Church and Citizenship in His Eternal Kingdom. Our message is as old as God’s Word to mankind:

Jesus Christ, crucified and risen for the salvation of all.

If you have questions or need assistance today please speak to a pastor or usher! Hand sanitizer and masks are available on the tables in the narthex for those who would like to use them. Restrooms are located down the hallway, toward the back entrance of the building. The order of service and the hymns for worship today can be found in this bulletin. Please take the bulletin home with you as it contains contact information for our pastors and news about what is going on at St. Paul’s this week.

If you are seeking a church home or interested in what we teach please talk with a pastor today. Free classes are offered regularly on the basics of the Bible and Christi- anity. These classes are for those who are seeking membership or looking for more information about God and the Bible.

2 SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST June 14, 2020

ROCK-SOLID TRUTH

Today’s Worship The Holy Ministry stands on the rock-solid truth of God’s Word. Not all who call themselves ministers do that, so watch out for false teachers! Many will come with wise sounding words and pious promises, but they are not what they seem. The Church’s only defense is to stand firmly on the rock-solid truth of God’s Word. The Season of Pentecost explicates the teachings of Christ and the application of faith in the life of the Christian. How fitting that this initial Sunday lays the foundation for that teaching and life: the inspired Word of God

INVOCATION

M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you.

4 CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

ABSOLUTION

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: 1 Kings 22:10-28

10 Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were seated, each on his own throne, arrayed in their robes. They were sitting by the threshing floor at the entrance to the gate of Samaria. All the prophets were prophesying before them. 11 Zedekiah son of Kena’anah had made iron horns for himself, and he said, “This is what the Lord says. With these you will gore Aram to death.” 12 All the prophets were prophesying in this same way: “Go up to Ramoth Gilead and triumph, for the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.” 13 The messenger who was sent to summon Micaiah said to him, “Pay attention to the words of the prophets. With one mouth they are promising good things to the king. Let your words be like the words of one of them and say something good.” 14 But Micaiah said, “As surely as the Lord lives, whatever the Lord says to me, that is

6 what I will say.” 15 Then he came to the king, and the king asked him, “Micaiah, should we go up to make war on Ramoth Gilead, or should we refrain?” He answered him, “Go up and triumph, for the Lord will give them into the hand of the king.” 16 Then the king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear that you will tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?” 17 Then Micaiah said, “I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains like sheep that have no shepherd, and the Lord said, ‘They have no masters. Each one should return to his home in peace.’” 18 Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you that he does not prophesy anything good about me, but only bad?” 19 Then Micaiah said: Now hear this word from the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and the whole army of heaven was standing around him, on his right and on his left. 20 Then the Lord said, “Who will entice Ahab so that he goes up and falls at Ramoth Gilead?” One spirit said this. Another one said that. 21 Finally a spirit came and stood before the Lord and said, “I will entice him.” The Lord said to him, “How?” 22 He said, “I will go and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.” Then the Lord said, “You will entice him successfully. Go and do it.” 23 Now look! The Lord has put a lying spirit into the mouths of all these prophets of yours, for the Lord has decreed disaster for you. 24 Then Zedekiah son of Kena’anah came up and struck Micaiah on his cheek and said, “Where is this pathway on which the spirit of the Lord has traveled from me to speak to you?” 25 Micaiah said, “Listen to me. You will see it on the day you go into the inner room to hide.” 26 Then the king of Israel said, “Seize Micaiah and take him back to Amon, the administrator of the city, and to Joash son of the king. 27 Then say, ‘This is what the king says. Put this man in prison and feed him nothing more than bread and water until I come back safely.’” 28 Then Micaiah said, “If you ever come back safely, then the Lord has not spoken through me.” Then he said, “Hear this, you people, all of you!” 7 PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 78 Christian Worship The psalm responses will be read, the refrain will be sung

M: O my people, hear my teaching;* C: listen to the words of my mouth.

M: I will utter thingsfrom of old,* C: what we have heard and what our fathers have told us.

M: We will not hide them from our children;* C: we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD.

Refrain

M: The LORD decreed statutes for Jacob* C: and established the law in Israel,

M: so the next generation would know them,* C: and they in turn would tell their children.

M: Then they would put their trust in God* C: and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain

8 SECOND LESSON: 2 Peter 1:20—2:3

20 since we know this above all else: No prophecy of Scripture comes about from someone’s own interpretation. 21 In fact, no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were being carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 There were false prophets also among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved ways, and because of them the way of the truth will be blasphemed. 3 In their greed they will exploit you with fabricated messages. Their condemnation announced long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

VERSE OF THE DAY

Alleluia. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Alleluia. (Psalm 119:105)

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! M: These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

9 GOSPEL: Matthew 7:15-29

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. You do not gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles, do you? 17 So then, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So then, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and drive out demons in your name and perform many miracles in your name?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.’ 24 “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on bedrock. 25 The rain came down, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not fall, because it was founded on bedrock. 26 Everyone who hears these words of mine but does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—it was completely destroyed.” 28 When Jesus finished speaking these words, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught them as one who had authority, and not like their experts in the law.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

11 SERMON…………………………..……….…………..…….....Pastor Joseph Fricke Text: Romans 3:21-25a, 27, 28

By Grace I’m Saved

21 But now, completely apart from the law, a righteousness from God has been made known. The Law and the Prophets testify to it. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all and over all who believe. In fact, there is no difference, 23 because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God publicly displayed as the atonement seat through faith in his blood. God did this to demonstrate his justice, since, in his divine restraint, he had left the sins that were committed earlier unpunished. 27 What happens to boasting then? It has been eliminated. By what principle—by the principle of works? No, but by the principle of faith. 28 For we conclude that a person is justified by faith without the works of the law.

Stand APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 12 THANKSGIVING
