Fally R. Paillacar C. Terra 2008 Economic Geography and Wages in Brazil: Evidence from Micro-Data Thibault Fally PSE – Paris School of Economics Rodrigo Paillacar CES – Université de Paris 1 Cristina Terra THEMA – Université de Cergy-Pontoise EPGE – Fundação Getulio Vargas Abstract This paper estimates the impact of market and supplier access on wage disparities across Brazilian states, incorporating the control of individual characteristics to the new economic geography methodology. We estimate market and supplier access disaggregated by industry, and we compute separately access to international and internal markets. We find a strong correlation between market access and wages differentials, even after controlling for individual characteristics, firm productivity, the source of market access (international, national or local), and using instrumental variables. Furthermore, market access turns out to be more important than supplier access. 1. Introduction Trade liberalization episodes over the past decades have been accompanied by increasing inequality in most developing countries. In a survey about the distributional effects of globalization, Goldberg and Pavcnik (2007) discuss several possible reasons for a positive association between trade openness and inequality. Among others, weak labor reallocation after reforms is pointed out as a common pattern for many developing countries. Conventional approaches like the standard version of the Stolper-Samuelson effect, or the 1 effects of Skill Biased Technological Change are often unable to capture all the complexity embodied in wage and labor reallocation responses to trade openness, especially from a spatial perspective.

However tempting, it is a lazy view that sees no mere country, but a vast continent all of its own, a land modern Brazil no different than it was fifty or a hundred of mysterious forests and powerful rivers, of lushness and or five hundred years ago. For the country has changed, superabundance, of brilliant sunlight and dazzling sea. As like any modern state. It has developed its own style the historian Robert M. Levine reminds us, descriptions of of national presentation, and elaborated contemporary Brazil as a ‘tropical paradise’ circulated widely in Europe cultural forms that are not merely reflections of familiar from the beginning of the 16th century. Over four centuries tropes – of carnaval and bossa nova, barbecued later, the writer Stefan Zweig was still amazed at ‘this land churrasco and pictures of Pelé – but active forms of self- [that] comprises everything at once’. definition suitable to changing times, new political climates and advancing social needs. Yet beauty, mystery, grandeur or whatever it is that our notion of paradise might demand by way of definition, are Brazil’s city museums are among the most potent of these as much a distraction as a vision if we are to understand cultural forums, for they are both experiences to be had Brazil today. • Sao Paulo Travel Information
Sao Paulo Travel Information São Paulo, Brazil To say São Paulo is a sprawling megalopolis is a serious understatement; it's as difficult to master at first glance as Moby Dick. Founded by Jesuit missionaries in the 16th century, it dwarfs other Brazilian cities in all aspects. Sampa, as locals call it, might not have the famous modernist architecture of Brasilia, the lure of sultry beaches of Bahia, or the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer to watch over, yet its certain effervescence elevates traveling souls. The largest metropolitan area south of the Equator, not just in Brazil, overwhelms the senses with cutting-edge art galleries, vibrant street art (Pichação), finest restaurants, and jovial nightlife. A cosmopolitan chaos of mashed cultures, it emanates a vibe of New York in South America. The city is a part tropical paradise as harmless showers drizzle the fast-paced (but warm-heated) Paulistanos who are haunted by the thoughts of commuting in their urban pursuits. Sao Paulo Tourist Map Image not found Sao-Paulohttps://www.mapsofworld.com/brazil/maps/sau-paulo-tourist-attractions-map.jpg tourist map Sao Paulo Tourist Map Like the Duomo in Florence, which towers above the Renaissance, the Neo-Gothic Sao Paulo Cathedral lurks above the shadows of palm trees. Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo exhibits wide collection of 19th-century Brazilian artworks and São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) holds arguably the most significant collection of artworks in South America. Sao Paulo Aquarium (Aquário de São Paulo) – the largest aquarium in Latin America – houses more than 3,000 animals from nearly 300 species.

The main purpose of this work was to present the way the capixaba newspapers A Gazeta and A Tribuna used to report the facts, behavior and the daily ways of life in Vitória (ES) from 1945 to 1955.
