Hockey Week Overview Hockey Week In Fairbanks is always a special time of year for ice hockey enthusiasts in Fairbanks, but this year there’s an added flavor to the 10‐day celebration of the sport. For the first time since the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame created Hockey Week In Fairbanks, the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup will be part of the fun and festivities. The Governor’s Cup goes to the winner of the annual collegiate season series between the Alaska Nanooks from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. This year’s Hockey Week In Fairbanks is scheduled from February 26‐March 6 and will be capped by the final two games of the Governor’s Cup on March 4‐5 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. The Nanooks lead this season’s Governor’s Cup Series after posting a 1‐0‐1 record in the first two games of the series in early December at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. It will be the final Western Collegiate Hockey Association series of the season for the Nanooks and Seawolves and it could be critical to each team’s post‐season playoff hopes. Hockey Week In Fairbanks kicks off with a two‐game North American Hockey League Series between the Fairbanks Ice Dogs and Springfield Junior Blues on February 26‐27 at the Big Dipper Ice Arena. The Ice Dogs are leading the NAHL Midwest Division and have the league’s best record so far this season. This year’s Hockey Week In Fairbanks will feature three new events: Signing of a giant jersey at various venues from Feb. 26‐March 6, Hockey Nite @ Hoo Doo on Feb. 29 at the Hoo Doo Brewery and “Brady‐Brady” readings at 6:30 p.m. on March 3 at Noel Wien Library. All of the customary Hockey Week In Fairbanks events from past years are on this year’s schedule, too. Among the other events on the schedule are: the Quest for the Golden Puck (Feb. 26 until found), the Hockey Extravaganza and Celebrity Games (Feb. 27), the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony (Feb. 27), the youth 3‐on‐3 tournaments, Feb. 28, the Blood Drive (Feb. 29‐March 4), Alaska Nanooks and Fairbanks Ice Dogs reading in schools (Feb. 29‐March 3), Back Yard Rink Judging (Feb. 29‐ March 2), Skate with the Ice Dogs (Feb. 29), floor hockey between the Nanooks and Tanana Valley Special Olympics (March 1), Wear Your Jersey to School Day (March 4), Ice Sculpture Dedication (March 5), Skate the Lake (March 6), free skate sharpening by Sport King (Feb. 27) and Play It Again Sports (March 5) and power skating clinics (Feb. 29). More details on Hockey Week In Fairbanks will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event. Hockey Week In Fairbanks is a production of the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame in conjunction with various hockey groups in the Interior. The event is sponsored by Emerald Isle Pull Tabs and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department.
