It gives me great pleasure to welcome all teams, players and officials to Jersey for the ICC European Division 1 U/19 Cricket World Cup (CWC) Regional Qualifier. The opportunity to represent your country is a great honour at any time, however, being provided with the opportunity to also qualify for a World Cup will be a memory you will cherish for the rest of your lives.

This year’s event will see the Under 19 national squads from each of six Europe’s Associate Members Denmark, Ireland, , Scotland, Jersey and Guernsey play against each other in a series of 50-over matches. Scotland will be looking to once again defend their title from top rivals Ireland, whilst Guernsey and Jersey will be participating for the first time at this age-group.

The ICC is dedicated to providing a pathway for all Member countries to compete at the highest level of our sport and therefore the top two teams at the end of this event will progress through to the Global ICC U/19 CWC Qualifier later this year. On behalf of the Pepsi ICC Development Programme, I wish you and your team the best of luck in achieving this aim.

There are many people who have contributed much to the organisation of this event, not least the Tournament Organiser Doug Ferguson to whom I and the ICC are truly grateful. In addition, we are very grateful to the following personnel for their involvement: the match officials – referee, umpires, scorers and web managers; groundsmen; match managers; and many other volunteers who have made all this possible.

Good luck to all those involved and enjoy the cricket!

Yours sincerely

Richard Holdsworth ICC Regional Development Manager - Europe

Sair Ahmed Nissar Nanjum, Svanholm CC, , RHFM, RHB – Sair has made huge strides over the past season, both in his consistency of and in his continued improvement as a middle order stroke - playing batsman. This is highlighted in his selection for the “New Look” Danish A team and National Team Structures. Mohsin Ali, Hvidovre CC, RAS, RHB – The newest member to the squad, Mohsin has risen from Danish domestic cricket and shown him self to be a slow bowler with real potential, as well as an outstanding fielder. A solid lower order batsman, his will be Mohsin’s first ICC Europe Tournament, but definitely not his last. Lars Flemming Bolt, Husum CC, RHB, RAS – Lars has been a regular in the Danish youth set-up since U13 age levels. A stylish batsman that can bat both at the top of the order or the middle, Lar’s will certainly be a player to watch this coming summer. An accomplished occasional bowler and agile fielder, he has also been selected for the Danish A team squad. Melad Nevabi, Herning CC, RHB, WK – Melad is another young cricketer that has risen through the ranks of Danish Youth Cricket. An outstanding wicketkeeper, both up to the stumps and back, and a top or middle order batsman with a solid technique, he is another player we hope will develop into a fully fledged National Team player through his newly aquired A team status. Shuaib Hasan Rashid, Svanholm CC, RHB, RAS – Another of our newly promoted A Team players, Hasan is a very solid middle order batsman with a full array of strokes around the . An occasional bowler, he is a very agile and fast fielder around the park. Ihyas Sawmy, Herning CC, RAS, LHB – The first of the current Danish Academy players to make it to the squad, Ihyas has also just been selected for the new look A Team here in Denmark. Ihyas is an very exciting slow bowling prospect, and certainly one to watch out for, he is also an accomplished fielder and can more than hold his own with the bat. Hamid Shah, Svanholm CC, RHB, RAS – Another player from the Danish Academy, Hamid has risen this winter to full National Team selection, one of the youngest players to do so in Danish Cricket history. A very solid top order batsman, with a fine variety of strokes, he is also an integral part of the bowling attack, and an outstanding fielder. Niclas Damgaard Hald, Herning CC, RHB, RAM – Niclas is a solid batsman with a large range of shots, who has improved a lot over the last few years. Hard work and good performances has made him a 1st team player for his club Herning CC. Niclas will if given a chance do his outmost to make a claim for a match-winning role in the tournament. Sohaib Zahid, ABCC, RAFM, RHB – Another member of the Danish Academy set up, Sohaib has again made huge strides this winter and is developing into a consistent “New Ball” bowler, and a more than useful bowler. Also a very agile fielder, he is also an excellent motivator both on and off the field. Sonny Nielsen, Herning CC, RHB, RAM – Sonny has played in various ICC Europe Tournaments at different age levels over the last few years and developed into a handy cricketer with both bat and bowl. A real ‘team player’ who tries to fit whatever role he is given in the team. Sonny has really made a name for himself in the field as being one of the faster men with a great pair of hands in Danish cricket. Minik Pedersen, Kolding CC, RHB, RAM, WK – Minik is another player with stacks of ICC Europe Tournament experience, and a good example of the Danish Development system. A talented allrounder, he can bat anywhere in the order, as he has a fine array of streokes. A useful bowler, he can also don the pads and gloves for the team. Zameer khan, Svanholm CC, RHB, RAM – Zameer is another talented top order batman from Brøndby based Svanholm Cricket Club. He is also a more than useful medium pace bowler, as well as a very agile fielder in all positions. Continued development in all departments, should see Zameer climb he way up to the top of Danish Cricket.

10 Ireland

Andrew Balbirnie (Captain, Pembroke) A stylish and composed top-order batsman and an economical off-spinner, Andrew contributed significantly to last year's under-17 European Championship victory (not least with an 86 against Scotland ). He scored a century for Ireland 'A' last month against a Yorkshire XI.

Jack Blakiston Houston (Instonian) Affiliated to the Instonians club, but playing most of his cricket in England, Jack took 4 for MCC against Ireland U-19s in a trial match at Carrickfergus in 2008, which brought him to the selectors attention. He is also a very accomplished batsman.

George Dockrell (Leinster) A canny slow-left-armer who has won many admirers for his willingness to flight the ball, George has come from nowhere over the past year to become an integral part of the Irish set-up. He was man-of-the-tournament at the CLICO U-15 World Cup in 2008.

Shane Getkate (Malahide) A tall, quick opening bowler and a more than useful lower-middle order batsman, Getkate has caught the eye of Warwickshire and is another of the Irish squad who has both Ireland 'A' and under-19 World Cup experience.

Graham McDonnell (Pembroke) An accomplished all-rounder, McDonnell regularly features in the Leinster senior averages with the bat, while as a skiddy and accurate medium-pacer he has a useful knack of breaking key partnerships.

Lee Nelson (Waringstown) Yet another accomplished all-rounder, Nelson proved to be an excellent captain in last year’s under-17 tournament in Belfast and as a solid opener and off-spinner he has been a crucial member of the Irish youth squads over the past few years.

Eddie Richardson (North County) Scion of the famous Mooney cricketing dynasty, Richardson has been scoring runs consistently in the middle order for his club and, as a sharpish change bowler he is one of the leading wicket-takers in senior league cricket in Leinster.

James Shannon (Instonians) James Shannon is a confident and dangerous batsman who has been scoring plenty of runs for the Instonians club, while his under-rated off-spin makes him a valuable all-rounder in the squad. He is on the books of English county side Worcestershire.

Craig Young (Bready) Highly-regarded by the Irish management, Young opens the bowling regularly and with good pace for his club in North-West Senior One and is a more than useful customer with the bat in the lower order.

Stuart Poynter (Middlesex) A very competent wicket-keeper batsman who played in the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia. His tidy glove work, coupled with his attacking make him an integral member of the squad.

Stuart Thompson (Eglinton) A very stylish top order batsman, who scored a match winning century as Ireland defeated Scotland to win the Under 17 European Championships in 2008. He also features regularly for Eglinton in the NW league as an opening bowler.

Graeme McCarter (Killyclooney) Opening seam bowler who has attracted the attention of Gloucestershire. His raw pace makes him a real handful for batsmen. A powerful striker of the ball, he can also contribute runs down the order.

Paul Stirling (Carrickfergus Prolific top order batsman who is now a regular in the Ireland senior side, playing in ther recent ICC World game with Pakistan. A powerful striker of the ball, he scores his runs quickly, and is sure to have a bright future in the game. He has a summer contract with Middlesex, and hopes to follow in the footsteps of and . He is also a more than useful off spin bowler.

Ben Ackland (Merrion) Another off-spinning all-rounder, Ben is on Worcestershire’s books and has plenty of experience at international under-19 level, having opened the batting at the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia.

11 Netherlands

Stijn Allema Quick , Captain/WK, RH opening bat. After having spend part of last winter in Australia, Stijn’s cricket has improved to such an extend that he is now the 2nd keeper for the National side and would have made his debut for Holland in the upcoming series against Canada which unfortunately clashes with this years U19 WCQ in Jersey. Alexei Kervezee Worcestershire CCC, RH opening bat. Alexei has been playing for the National team from the age of 16 when he made his debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka scored 434 in that match!) . He was an integral part of the Dutch Twenty20 team that beat England last months in the ICC World Twenty20. Tim Gruijters Warwickshire CCC, RH top-order bat, RA medium pace, Tim is part of the Warwickshire Academy and recently made his debut for the Dutch National Team in the T/20 World Cup. He should become one of the leading players in this side. Quirijn Gunning Bloemendaal, RA medium pace, RH middle-order bat. Q, as he is know to his fellow players, is part of a young Bloemendaal first XI. He could develop into a more than useful all-rounder and could play an important role in this tournament. Floris Kingma VCC Voorburg, RH top-order bat and occasional RA bowler. Floris is technically a very correct player but has the ability to free the arms as well. He is a great fielder. Mathijs Luten Bloemendaal, RH middle-order bat. Mathijs’s batting has improved to such extend that a good tournament could catapult him up to higher levels. Very quick in the field and good team man . Lucas Brouwers Hercules Utrecht, Leg spin bowler and late middle order batsman. Lucas has invested a lot of time in his cricket recently and his winter in South Africa has certainly matured his bowling. Lucas will always give you 100%. Gagandeep Singh Sparta , Hard hitting top-order batsman. Gagan is a new kid on the block with a lot of natural ability. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to this level of cricket. Ferdi Vink HBS The Hague, RA swing bowler. Ferdi has got a very easy action and a natural ability to swing the ball. He has picked up a bit more pace which should help him a lot on the English wickets. Olivier Klaus HCC The Hague, RH opening bowler, RH bat. Mr Reliable ! A very consistent & quiet performer, Olivier is one of those players you love to have in your side. He always gives you 100%. Olivier has the ability to score some quick runs too! Vinoo Tewarie VRA , RH bat, Leg-break bowler. Vinoo is a typical Indian batsman – stylish and wristy! He has been playing at the highest level in Holland for the last two years and is developing into a quality player . Paul van Meekeren Rood en Wit Heemstede, RA pace bowler, RH middle order bat. Paul is one of the most dedicated players in the team and has developed some good pace over the last year. He has the potential to become Holland’s next fast bowler. As a hard hitting batsman can do some damage at the backend of the innings too . Sebastiaan Braat Hermes DVS Schiedam, RA fast bowler, RH late middle order bat. He is another up and coming U17 player. A great competitor and good fielder. Philip van der Brandeler HCC The Hague, RA pace bowler, RH middle order bat. After having missed a season due to injury Philip is back and could play an important role in this side as an all-rounder.

Manager/Coach – Roland Lefebvre Assistant Coach – Asim Khan – Asim played more than 75 games for Holland and was a very successful opening bowler. His figures of 7-9 against East and Central Africa in the ICC Trophy 1997 in Malaysia still rate amongst the best performances ever.
