This was the view expressed by Senator Harcourt Husbands, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, as he spoke at an Official Book Launch Ceremony to celebrate the work of author Dr. Dan Carter, who wrote “The Story of Society Primary” to capture the prestigious history of the school, which was the first elementary school in Barbados for Blacks. Speaking directly to the work of Dr. Dan Carter,Senator Husbands, himself a former teacher, noted that it was during a recent debate of the Cultural Industries Bill in the Senate that he predicted that there would be an explosion of talent in the literary field, with a number of writers coming to the fore. Already, he said, there are numerous local writers who have made a mark on history’s page and the quality of their contributions cannot be overlooked in favour of musicians, artists and other cultural practitioners. “I also made the point that the contribution of our writers is overlooked and musicians, especially calypsonians (garner) the lion share of the public’s attention. At that time I noted a number of individual writers whose work I said had impressed me.I mentioned “Whispers of Peace to My Soul” by Ralph Thorne; “Listen to the Hills” by Cynthia Wilson; “The Shuffler’s Tale” by Sir Carlise Burton; “Eye Witness to Order and Disorder” by Harold Hoyte; “The Encyclopedia of Reggae” by Michael Alleyne; “Bengal to Barbados” by Sabir INDEPENDENT WOMEN: Women Entrepreneurs of Barbados’ (WEB) Technical Advisor, Undine Whittaker ad- Nakhuda and Andrea Stuart’s “Sugar in mires the wide range of items on display by WEB member Leona Lampkin of Caesar L.L Variety in time for Independence the Blood”, Husbands pointed out. The Barbados Advocate Friday November 29, 2013 • 11 Fogging vehicles and officers under attack ENVIRONMENTAL Health Officers who work with the Ministry of Health’s Fogging Programme have been coming under attack from residents in some districts. The latest incident occurred as recent as last Friday, when a team from the Vector Control Unit was pelted with rocks by youngsters while they were carrying out routine fogging operations in a St. James district. That was just but one of a number of stone throwing incidents that officers have endured throughout the years, but they reported that it has increased in frequency within the last few months, to the point where the attacks are happening almost on a weekly basis. Senior Environmental Health Officer, Vector Control Unit, Maurice Gaskin, told the Barbados Government Information Service that if the attacks continued the offending areas would not be visited. “Some residents feel that the fog is detrimental to their health, others feel it is interrupting their ‘trade’, so they pelt at the trucks. What happens is that we pull out of the areas as soon as the stone throwing begins. Then some householders will say that we didn’t fog their district. But we have to look out for the safety of the officers. Some guys were hit in the head with rocks already. The thing is, you can’t see through the fog so you don’t see the rocks coming at Environmental Health Officers, Kerry Catlyn (left) and Michael Branford, would like to see an end to the stone throwing you. As noted by Symmonds, the second question was one that was directed towards teachers, and how they could assist them to do even more. In this way, the idea of incorporating puppets into the Primary school level was thought up. “And we determined that perhaps we could create puppets, hand puppets, obviously, these will be of greater interest to those in Primary school, but we have to start somewhere and we thought that these hand puppets had the ability to bring the message of the SPBMP alive,” he stated. 24 • Friday November 29, 2013 Hello!

on how far we have come AS our country celebrates its 47th anniversary of Independence, it was instructive for this writer to draw on one of the speeches of our most beloved sons of the soil. The words of the late Rt. Excellent Errol Barrow are worthy of reflection as we assess our current state of affairs and how much we have been able to accomplish. In his speech to the Barbados Constitutional Conference in London of July 1966, Mr. Barrow spoke clearly and forcefully about his desire to see Barbados as an independent country. He put forward a strong case for self- determination by refuting the notion, “that it is commonly believed, although it is not a fact, that people of African origin cannot maintain democratic forms of government after independence.” He followed this up by reminding those in attendance that the system of colonialism was not meant to promote freedom and development of institutions, but to safeguard the imperial interest of the mother country. In this myopic quest of the imperial authority, one of the scourges it left behind was a divided society which would take time to sufficiently adjust and develop after the Then… colonial period. In reflecting on these words, it is safe to say that we have put to rest the transparency and good governance. there are still many divisions within our religion or class anyone can feel proud to negative belief that a predominantly Indeed, as Mr. Barrow alluded to we do society. Our motto of ‘Pride and Industry’ should not be taken lightly, but should serve as our guiding light as we navigate difficult waters. Being proud does not mean that we become arrogant or indeed complacent. It simply means that we have a positive mirror image of ourselves not allowing our scarce resources or the smallness of our size to intimidate us. Additionally, more than ever before, we need to adhere to and put into action the idea of industry in our motto. Without this focus we will find it increasingly difficult to earn our way in the world and to maintain the standard of living we have become accustomed to. Barbados has much to be proud of as it celebrates its Independence, no doubt the words of our Father of Independence have been justified as we reflect on the bold step he took in 1966 on the behalf of our country. We must continue to strive to make the country the best it can be as an outstanding example of self- determination and accomplishing great things despite the odds.

P R HOROSCOPES O S BY HOLIDAY A N D ARIES (March 21-April 19). You can be gentle when you need to be, and you need to be now. Acertain person will run unless you are C unrelentingly kind and reassuring. This person can’t take even the O smallest amount of criticism. N S TAURUS (April 20-May 20). The way your family members act doesn’t have to be a reflection on you. Let people be the way they are, and try not to get involved unless it seems truly necessary. You’ll make your own impressions.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21).The reward for taking a risk won’t be the prize at the end — that is likely to be made of plastic and require regular dusting. The real reward is the feeling that you’ve truly achieved something. Z I CANCER (June 22-July 22). It’s important to react to what hap- pens in a timely and proportionate manner. The “proportionate” part T is important. You’ll get very little accomplished by overreacting to S the events around you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll feel like stealing away to recharge, and if you can manage it, you should. Spending time alone teaches you to be there for yourself. It is within your power to make yourself feel safe.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22).It’s the same scene, but some of the peo- ple involved will remember it with pleasure, and some will remem- R ber it with pain. With some sensitivity, you can tip the balance toward E pleasure for someone on the fence. X LIBRA(Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Expose yourself repeatedly to the thing that makes you uncomfortable, and you’ll find that it loses power over M you. You’ll become comfortable whether or not you want to be. O R SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’ll be drawn to situations in G which you have no idea what is expected of you. Most people avoid A that kind of thing, but you get a charge from the challenge of the un- N known.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). It is vigilant of you to guess at the motives of others, but take a break from this now, as it’s likely a waste of time. If you want to know why a person is acting in a cer- tain way, just ask. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19).When someone makes the same P mistake repeatedly, it might not be a mistake at all. It could be a per- H sonality style that you are better off to accept and expect. A AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Whether it’s for work or fun, get- N ting into motion is the hardest part. After that, you’re home free. The T feeling that you are moving forward is motivation enough to bring O you to the end. M PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You have to spell things out for some people. Expecting them to know how to act or to pick up on your so- cial cues will set you up for disappointment. Sure, it’s more work, but it just happens that way sometimes.

NGOs need help; many on the GRIM REALITY verge of closing ONE non-governmental organisation that for close to two decades has helped countless entrepreneurs start their own business may be on the verge of closing down its operations. General Manager of the Barbados Youth Business Trust (BYBT), Marcus Alexander, outlined the grim reality fac- ing not only his organisation, but other NGOs in the country if more partners do not come on board or increase funding to help start-up businesses and to ensure their sustainability. He was speaking to the media yester- day morning at the BYBT’s Pinfold Street headquarters, where he explained that the inability to continue funding these businesses would have a negative impact not only on unemployment figures, but on social ills because of the fall-out. With an operational cost of $270 000,he said the BYBT would ideally wish to fund around 50 businesses at $5 000 each. He showed the media a stack of over 100 en- quiries from persons wishing the assis- tance of the BYBT, who will be turned away. He made the call for commercial banks and other lending institutions to be flexible at this time. Alexander made the point that so con- strained is the BYBT at present that the five persons on staff will have to be cut to one, recognising that major funding to the organisation is not expected until April 2014. “At this stage we don’t have the where- withal to do it,and I don’t know how much longer other NGOs who are younger in the business than we are will be able to survive in order to help individuals. If we can’t help them to be employed and we ourselves cannot be employed, you can BYBT General Manager Marcus Alexander outlining some of the challenges facing his organisation and other NGOs in see the fall-out right across the board.” Barbados, while Financial Coordinator Claire Yarde looks on during a press conference at the BYBT's Pinfold Street HELP NEEDED on Page 6 headquarters yesterday morning.
