Librarians have always worked within a spirit of collaboration and cooperation however with increasing specialisation has also sometimes come a divide between fellow professionals. To reduce this the two librarians at the Health Sciences Library, University of Sheffield, are now actively engaging in a shared delivery of information skills sessions. We describe our experiences around critical appraisal and other skills initiatives demonstrating how collaborative practice allows us to share our knowledge with each other and our students and also creates an open and collaborative learning environment - reflecting the multifaceted nature of the learning experience. Background Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UKs largest, busiest and most successful NHS Foundation Trusts. The Trust provides a full range of hospital and community services for people in Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from further afield. With a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence and innovation in medical research it has been awarded the Hospital of the Year in the Good Hospital Guide 3 out of the last 5 years. There are over 1600 employees making the Trust the second largest employer in the city.

C. READ University of Sheffield Medical School, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, U.K. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (AECB) is an important cause of death and morbidity in developed countries and also has significant economic impact. The disease is characterized by increased dyspnoea, sputum volume and sputum purulence; the most commonly associated pathogens are Haemophilus inzuenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis. H. injluenzae and S. pneumoniae express virulence determinants that directly and indirectly impair mucociliary clearance and incite other consequencesthat are permissive to microbial persistence. Regarding the use of antibiotics, there is currently a lack of large-scale clinical trials that are sufficiently powerful to provide good evidence-based information. Nonetheless, antimicrobial chemotherapy has repeatedly been shown to confer benefit in patients with moderately severe features of AECB. Simple clinical criteria can be used to identify patients in whom there is a higher likelihood of treatment failure or mortality during AECB. These include significant cardiopulmonary co-morbidity, frequent exacerbations, advanced decline in lung function, malnutrition or other generalized debility, advanced age (> 70 years) and concurrent treatment with corticosteroids. In such patients, an aggressive antimicrobial approach to AECB may be warranted in order to prevent clinical failure or re- presentation. From a clinical perspective, appropriate drugs include those that are stable to b-lactamases, are bactericidal against causative pathogens, penetrate diseased lung tissue in high concentrations and have a good safety profile.
