THS Slide Collection, THS Postcard Collection, and THS Negative Collection Respectively 152 N. York St., 2nd Floor, Elmhurst, IL 60126 historictheatres.org Finding Aid for the THEATRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY SLIDE COLLECTION Acc No.: Future Additions Expected: Yes Finding Aid creation: August 28, 2014 Size: Approximately 8 linear feet Abstract The Theatre Historical Society Slide Collection consists of approximately 8 linear feet of photographic. The collection consists of nearly 10,000 photographic slides documenting over 2,050 theatres in the United States as well as some international theatres. Background Information The Theatre Historical Society of America was founded in 1969 to promote the legacy of America’s historic theatres and insure the documentation of the architectural, cultural and social history of those theatres. Materials were collected by members and kept in separate locations. Over time the collections were brought to one location and combined. From these initial collections the materials were organized and separated into several different collections. Records detailing histories of specific theatres were labeled the Theatre File, materials containing information on theatre mechanics, cinema chains, architects, THS members, vaudeville circuits, among other topics became the Subject Files, Photos that were used in the publication of Marquee were gathered into the Editors Collection, photographic slides, postcards, and negatives became the THS Slide Collection, THS Postcard Collection, and THS Negative Collection respectively. These collections came from THS members and donations made throughout the organization’s history. The following is a list of donors and photographers that contributed material to the slide collection. This list may not represent all contributing parties. Fred Beall Don King James C. The slides are organized geographically by country, state, city then by theatre. Each slide (with the exception of the unidentified slides) is labeled with a four digit number sequence. The first numbers represent the state or geographic area, the second the city, the third the theatre, and the final numbers represent the sequential slide count of that particular theatre. Geographic areas start with the United States with the states being numbered alphabetically, followed by other countries. Cities and theatres initially were alphabetized and numbered but later additions to the collection were incorporated at the end of the list as they were added to the collection. For example a slide with the index number of 03-10-01-01 is for the Rialto theatre in Winslow, Arizona. The 03 corresponds with Arizona, 10 is Winslow, the tenth city in the Arizona grouping. The first 01 represents the Rialto, the first theatre cataloged for Winslow, and the second 01 is the first slide within the Winslow Rialto grouping. The listing of geographic index codes is as follows. Alabama – 01 Mississippi – 24 West Virginia – 48 Alaska – 02 Missouri – 25 Wisconsin – 49 Arizona – 03 Montana – 26 Wyoming – 50 Arkansas – 04 Nebraska – 27 Organs – 55 California – 05 Nevada – 28 Ballrooms – 56 Colorado – 06 New Hampshire – 29 Models – 57 Connecticut – 07 New Jersey – 30 Trailer strips, house slides, etc. Deleware – 08 New Mexico – 31 – 58 District of Columbia – 51 New York – 32 Chicago Decorator’s Supply Florida – 09 North Carolina – 33 Company – 59 Georgia – 10 North Dakota – 34 Canada – Ontario – 60 Hawaii – 11 Ohio – 35 Canada – Quebec – 61 Idaho – 12 Oklahoma – 36 Canada – British Columbia – 63 Illinois – 13 Oregon – 37 Canada – Alberta – 63 Indiana – 14 Pennsylvania – 38 Mexico – 65 Iowa – 15 Rhode Island – 39 Europe – 68 Kansas – 16 South Carolina – 40 Australia – 69 Kentucky – 17 South Dakota – 41 Miscellaneous Foreign – 70 Louisiana – 18 Tennessee – 42 Netherlands – 71 Maine – 19 Texas – 43 Italy – 73 Maryland – 20 Utah – 44 China – 74 Massachusetts – 21 Vermont – 45 Nepal – 75 Michigan – 22 Virginia – 46 New South Wales – 76 Minnesota – 23 Washington – 47 New Zealand – 77 (c) Theatre Historical Society, 152 N.
