Coordinator Speaks Dr. Bebe Patten COGIC Scholars Fellowship COORDINATOR SPEAKS Volume 10, Issue 4 As the year 2012 winds down to a close, I want to take this time to November/December express my gratitude to all who have supported us through the year. It seems 2012 that it was only yesterday when, on the heels of an intellectually stimulating Society for Pentecostal Studies conference that Linda Neely invited me to Dates to Remember: work with her on what has now become the COGIC Scholars Fellowship. Since that time, there have been many changes. However, we have made some Founder’s Day very important strides since our inception. There have been many significant C.H. With their assistance we have made significant contributions to scholarship within our denomination and the broader academy. With the Feb.25-28 current leadership team of Eric Williams, Glenda Goodson, Oscar Owens, Charles Hill and Eric Greaux we can truly say, “We’ve come this far by faith leaning on the Lord.” And we can’t turn around now for there are oncoming Society for Pentecostal scholars within our denomination depending on us. BEBE PATTEN: A CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEER Inside this issue: In fulfillment of our commitment to the larger Pentecostal body, I have invited Dr. Abraham Ruelas, to submit the lead article for this issue of the Dr. Bebe Patten 1-3 Advocate. Lecture One 19TH CENTURY ANTECEDENTS TO 20TH CENTURY PENTECOSTALISM INTRODUCTION Today we are here to talk about the face of global Christianity. According to a Pew Charitable Trust study released in 2011, based on data gathered the previous year, it was estimated that the global Christian population stood at 2.18 billion people of an estimated world population of 6.9 billion. These numbers were further divided into a split of just over 50% identified as Roman Catholic, with 36.7% claiming to be Protestants, another 11.9% listed as Orthodox, leaving 1.3% to be described as “other Christians,” including Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses. The purpose of our deliberations today is not to quibble over what is and is not a Christian. We accept that the only proper definition of a “Christian,” is one who has accepted by faith the Gospel of Jesus Christ and is striving to walk in a manner commensurate with the Word of God. Nevertheless, there are many in the world today that consider themselves Christians by one definition or another and the Pew study factors in the broadest range of those individuals for the purpose of analyzing the global phenomena known as Christianity.1 According to Pew’s figures, in the past 100 years the global Christian population has increased from 600 million in 1910 out of a possible world population estimated at 1.8 billion to the current levels.

Douglas Wilder Library at Virginia Union University. The subject areas reflect his specialties in the history and theology of African-American sacred and secular music, African history and slave culture, and African-American history and sociology. The collection includes a significant number of hymnals from various denominations. The former University of Richmond music and American studies professor is now a professor of religious studies at the University of South Carolina. He earned a music degree from Hampton University and completed graduate work in music composition as well as theology at Washington University and Duke Divinity School. Spencer donated this extensive collection to VUU for several reasons. Until the summer 2000, he was a resident of Richmond and VUU was the city’s African American university. As well, VUU has a School of Theology and Spencer has published extensively in the area of religion. Finally, his architect father, John H. Spencer, participated in the design of the Wilder library. It is in the elder Spencer’s name that Dr. Spencer has donated his collections. The books are housed in the library’s closed collections.

Despite high levels of religiosity within this group, various stressors associated with experienced racism, sexism, and other life occurrences require coping as a method to endure negative experiences. While coping through religion is not uncommon, researchers sought to explore how different beliefs impacted the coping process among African-American women. This study investigated religious coping methods, well-being, and denominational affiliation of African-American women in three Protestant denominations where African Americans are highly represented: African Methodist Episcopal, Baptist (as governed by the National Baptist Convention, USA), and Church of God in Christ. The participant sample (N=202) was drawn from 14 churches in Houston, Texas and Bryan, Texas and ranged in age from 18 to 94. Participants completed surveys pertaining to demographics, religious coping methods, and current well-being. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to justify variable creation for positive and negative religious coping methods; a regression analysis determined if religious coping methods and denominational affiliation affected well-being; and a moderating regression analysis and ANOVA F-tests were used to determine overall and individual denominational effects in the relationship between religious coping and well-being.
