RAILWAY ENTHUSIASTS 2018 February 2018: A RAILWAY LIFE Andrew gave us a talk about his sometimes-colourful career on the railway, mainly spent at Toton. Starting in November 1970, Andrew was looking for the legendary “Job for Life”, something that was still available back in those days, so applied for a clerical job with British Rail. This was as an ATI (Advanced Traffic Information) clerk, a new system that was being tried out to make sure that traffic could be individually identified. This was a little hit and miss, due to the vagaries of what passed for technology then. Training in touch-typing was seen as a necessity, so off he went with 3 other colleagues to Euston. Mistaken identity nearly got him into trouble but resulted in fortunately gaining a more advantageous post. With yet another system being brought into play, Andrew made a move to Gloucester to steal a march on this new process. A couple of fun years, watching nuclear flasks being derailed, mysterious contents eating a wagon and flying wagons burying themselves in the ground followed, before he was propelled back to Toton. The decline in traffic ended up with the demise of Hump Shunting before a couple of moves found him in Nottingham, on the site where Dunelm now sits. After some fortuitous moves and promotions, Andrew found himself, as privatisation took the freight railway into American hands, in an extremely busy and exacting role. He was trying to win freight back to rail from road, an uphill battle at the best of times. As Development Manager (Central) Andrew was responsible for projects in the South-East, East Anglia and the East Midlands, before changes that for a brief time had him covering projects across most of the country! Things steadied down, very slightly as new territorial lines were drawn and eventually “Central” came to mean the East Midlands, West Midlands, all of Wales and the South West from Southampton westwards. -

The development of the railway locomotive 1. The steam locomotive is, in essence, a large kettle which heats water until it turns into steam, that steam is then used, under pressure, to move the engine and the train. One of the earliest and most successful locomotives was “The Rocket” used on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway which opened in 1830. The Rocket Wheel arrangement 0-2-2 Built 1829 2. This early design was rapidly improved upon and the locomotive soon assumed the shape that we recognise today. “Captain Baxter was built in 1877 and can be seen today at the Bluebell Railway. A the years went by bigger and faster locomotives were developed to meet the needs of both passengers and freight as illustrated by this South Eastern & Chatham Railway engine which ran between London and the Kent coast. This Southern Railway engine, built in 1936, was sent to Barry Scrapyard in South Wales following the end of steam on British Railways in 1968. It was rescued by the Bluebell and delivered to Sheffield Park Station in 1978, where it was restored to running order. -

Isambard Kingdom Brunel • Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a civil engineer in the 19th century • He designed many bridges, tunnels and buildings • In 1833 he became Chief Engineer of the Great Western Railway and began work on the line from London to Bristol. • In 1841 work began on the building of the Swindon Works; STEAM is now housed in part of the original works • Some of Brunel’s most notable achievements include: Clifton Suspension Bridge, Box Tunnel and Paddington Station. Let’s Explore Building Bridges Bridges have been used for centuries to enable people to cross otherwise impassable obstacles, such as streams, rivers or valleys. Engineers, like Brunel, must consider how far the bridge needs to reach or span and what will cross the bridge, for example pedestrians, trains or other traffic. A bridge also needs to support the materials it is made from as well as the load that will cross it. When designing a bridge engineers also need to think about what will pass under the bridge. There are many different types of bridges, including beam bridges, arch bridge and suspension bridges. You might like to research and investigate some different types and find out about some famous and beautiful bridges. Try it at Home Become an engineer! Build a bridge to take the weight of a LEGO figure or another of your toys, a small car perhaps. Use things that you can find in your home or garden; books, cans or toilet rolls for the piers to hold your bridge up. Sometimes having a limited amount of resources can help you be more inventive: use just rolled up newspaper and sticky tape, an empty cereal box or even dried spaghetti and marshmallows for your structure! If your bridge is wide it might need extra supports in the middle. -
