Zuzana Varínska Reiner Reocentrum s.r.o. Bratislava, Slovakia December 08 – 14, 2019

December 08, Sunday. I met my colleague from the Department of Rehabilitation of the University Hospital Bratislava for the first time at the train station. Around lunchtime we started our one-hour journey from Bratislava to Vienna and then travelled from Vienna to Salzburg. Everything went well. We talked a lot and finally I had time to relax, which I used for crossword puzzles and for a book - for the mother of two young children it was an amazing time. From the busy railway station in Salzburg we took the bus to Schloss Arenberg. We found the Schloss Arenberg building without any problems, according to the guidelines we received by email. After filling out some formal papers, we got the keys for our rooms, which were nicely furnished, clean, spacious and comfortable. Everything what is needed is in the room. Around 7 pm, we met faculty representatives, professors, organizers and participants from other countries in the lobby. The welcome drink and speech were very encouraging. The whole evening had a pleasant atmosphere. The dinner was tasty and enjoyable. During the dinner, we met another colleague from Slovakia. It was a very nice evening.

December 09, Monday. At 8 am, faculty representative Dr. Joel Stein welcomed us and encouraged us to take the pre-seminar test. After the test, we had a lecture about stroke recovery with doctor Stein. I was very pleased that most of the treatment methods are known to me and are used in our country. I appreciated the fact that these methods are successful abroad. A pleasant coffee break was followed by a lecture of Sclerosis Multiplex with a very sympathetic and positive Dr. Diane A. Thompson and a lecture about the use of robotics and given by Dr. Stein, who brought up the question whether every amazing technology brings a real benefit to the patient. Nevertheless, it is a very promising treatment aid. After lunch, lectures were given by Dr. Thompson and Dr. Stein. Then we got useful tips about how to present a case presentation. The evening was free. I tried jogging by the river Salzach. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the castle, which is one of the biggest in Europe. Dinner again was very tasty and pleasant. I met and talked to a lot of colleagues from other countries, including Serbia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Mexico.

December 10, Tuesday. Tuesday started with a lecture presented by Dr. Richard Crevenna, who talked about cancer rehabilitation. His lecture was followed by an introduction to the management of Osteoporosis by Dr. Elisabeth Preisinger. Both lectures were of great importance to me. I got acquainted with new standards for the use of physical methods in oncological patients. In the afternoon, two thirds of the participants, including myself, presented their case report to the audience.

December 11, Wednesday. I started the morning with jogging and a pleasant breakfast with my colleagues. At 8 am, the lecture I was interested the most was given by Dr. Katherine Yao, who spoke about sport injuries of children. Later followed a lecture about neck pain by Dr. Michael Saulle. Both talks were very interesting and useful for my work practice. Then followed two lectures about rehabilitation of facial palsy and polyneuropathy presented by Dr. Othmar Schuhfied. I took many notes as I do encounter facial nerve lesions in my practice quite often and I have learned about proven approaches to treat this disease. The afternoon was free. We used it for exploring the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Then we spent a nice time at the Christmas markets. Some people went shopping and others went to Mozart's birth house.

December 12, Thursday. The first lecture on Thursday was about buttock pain presented by Dr. Saulle. I find this topic very useful for my professional life. As a pediatrician rehabilitation professional, I was very interested in the topic of injuries of dancers and gymnasts – only last week I was treating a ballet dancer with an ankle injury and the week before a patient with a stress fracture of the metacarpus after a Riverdance performance. The ultrasound workshops in the afternoon I found particularly useful. Great in every way. We learned about different approaches, views, dynamic shoulder exams and the examination of the elbow and the knee. Furthermore, we were informed about how to inject the preparations into the joint. The evening ended with a great dinner and a wonderful concert.

December 13, Friday. We started the last day with a lecture about the care of patients at the end of their lives. Dr. Gerold Ebenbichler shared cases from his experience and described various treatment options.

Looking back at the week, I have learned so much about new approaches to obtain precise diagnosis and to give patients specific treatment. I was honored to share my experience with colleagues from other countries and I was happy to meet new people. I have learned a lot from a great faculty with many years of experience who shared their knowledge with us. I want to express my great gratitude to everyone in the organization of this seminar. I was given the opportunity to gain new friends, extend my network and enjoy Salzburg. I hope to participate in future seminars with a diverse and multidisciplinary group.

SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW

Kristóf Babarczy University of Szeged Szeged, Hungary December 08 – 14, 2019

December 08, Sunday I arrived at Salzburg by train in the evening. I was glad to meet my fellow colleagues. We were kindly welcomed by the seminar organizers. During the reception dinner I talked to three kind ladies from Slovakia.

December 09, Monday. The seminar had a very good beginning. Several lectures of this day had a neurological topic, which I was particularly interested in. I got to know a nice woman from Mexico, who was sitting beside me. We listened to a very useful presentation about how to present a case, which I could use to prepare my own presentation for the very next day.

December 10, Tuesday This was a nice day. In the morning the lectures continued (again including lectures with a neurological topic). In the afternoon some of us held our own case presentations. I was presenting about a 44-year-old man who recovered from central pontine myolinolysis. In the evening, I went for a run at the riverbank and later my fellow colleagues and I were chatting and playing table soccer at Schloss Arenberg.

December 11, Wednesday. Today there were lectures only in the morning. As it was a free afternoon, we went to the city center in group after lunchtime. The weather was wonderful and the sun was shining as we explored the city. We enjoyed our time at the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Christmas Markets. Three of us, including me, went to Mozart’s birthplace as well.

December 12, Thursday. Thursday was a long day. In the morning there were interesting lectures as usual and in the afternoon, the second half of fellows gave their case presentations. Then we had a workshop for practicing ultrasound examination of joints, which was really interesting. Later that evening, we listened to a nice ‘chamber music concert’. Afterwards, we ended the evening chatting till late into the night – even some of the faculty members joined us. It was a very nice evening.
