A Chromosomal Analysis of 15 Species of Gymnopleurini, Scarabaeini and Coprini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)
A chromosomal analysis of 15 species of Gymnopleurini, Scarabaeini and Coprini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) R. B. Angus, C. J. Wilson & D. J. Mann The karyotypes of one species of Gymnopleurini, two Scarabaeini, five Onitini and seven Coprini are described and illustrated. Gymnopleurus geoffroyi, Scarabaeus cristatus, S. laticollis, Bubas bison, B. bubalus, B. bubaloides, Onitis belial, O. ion, Copris lunaris, Microcopris doriae, M. hidakai and Helopcopris gigas all have karyotypes with 2n=18 + Xy. Copris hispanus and Paracopris ����������ramosiceps have karyotypes with 2n=16 + Xy and Copris sinicus has a karyotype comprising 2n=12 + Xy. Heterochromatic B-chromosomes have been found in Bubas bubalus. Spanish material of Bubas bison lacks the distal heterochromatic blocks found in most of the chromosomes of Italian specimens. The karyotype of Heliocopris gigas is unusual in that the autosomes and X chromosome are largely heterochromatic. R. B. Angus* & C. J. The lack of dung beetles in late winter and early spring represents an annual loss of 17-25% of that benefit in the main cattle grazing areas of temperate Australia. -

We analyze the impact of grazing intensity (low and moderate) and the use of veterinary medical products (VMPs) on the dung beetle community in the province of Pesaro-Urbino (Italy). Grazing intensity is a key factor in explaining the diversity of dung beetles. In the case of the alpha diversity component, sites with a low level of grazing activity – related in a previous step to the subsequent abandonment of traditional farming – is characterized by a loss of species richness (q = 0) and a reduction in alpha diversity at the levels q = 1 and q = 2. -

Facultad de Biología Universidad de Salamanca. 37071 Salamanca (España) RESUMEN Se realizó un seguimiento directo de la actividad de los individuos de Bubas bubalus (Oliver, 1811) en encinares mediterráneos del oeste de la Península Ibérica. A la vez se recogieron 1embras para análisis del desarrollo ovárico. desgaste de las tibias, acumulación de cuerpo ~raso e inseminación. El ciclo de vida de esta especie se completa en el transcurso de un año presentando dos náx;mos poblacionales coincidentes con picos de emergencia de adultos. Existe una clara elación entre el desarrollo de la ovariola y el comportamiento reproductor, Este coprófago es ípicamente crepuscular con el máximo de actividad de vuelo situado en un corto intervalo de Jminosidad (70 y 20 lux). Las cópulas se producen desde los primeros momentos de la mergencia del imago. no habiendo relación entre el grado de desarrollo de la gónada y la ,resencia o ausencia de espermatozoides en la espermateca. Desde la emergencia hasta la ¡dlficación pasan por una etapa de activa alimentación oon el oonsiguiente acúmulo de cuerpo raso. Las puestas se realizan en masas de estiércol de 65 gr y 35 mi por término medio, nlerradas a una profundidad variable entre 8 y 35 cm . Department Risk Analysis Application to add Euonthophagus crocatus, Onthophagus marginalis spp. andalusicus and Gymnopleurus sturmi (three species of dung beetle) to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 List of Specimens taken to be Suitable for Live Import November 2019 INTRODUCTION Purpose of the proposed import The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) seeks to import three beetle species from the Scarabaeinae subfamily, Euonthophagus crocatus, Onthophagus marginalis spp.andalusicus and Gymnopleurus sturmi into Australia as part of the large Rural Research and Development for Profit program ‘Dung Beetles as Ecosystem Engineers’. The Scarabaeinae subfamily is known commonly as the ‘true dung beetles’. There are over 7000 species of dung beetle worldwide. Dung beetles have preferences based on vegetative cover, dung type, soil type, flight times (diurnal, twilight or nocturnal), climate and season (Doube and Marshall, 2014). The purpose of introducing E. crocatus, O. m. andalusicus and G. sturmi is to fill the current seasonal and geographic gaps in dung beetle activity in southern Australia. The three dung beetle species will be bred to large numbers (8 000+) then released into the environment at targeted sites to enhance dung dispersal and burial and to limit bush fly larvae survival in major sheep, beef and milk producing areas of southern Australia. Adult E. crocatus, O. m. andalusicus and G. sturmi will be collected from several localities in south-western Europe and northern Africa and air-freighted to Australia (up to 500 pairs per consignment). The beetles will be held in an Approved Arrangement site (quarantine) in Canberra. Their eggs will be treated with disinfecting agent (Virkon®), removed from quarantine, reared to adulthood and released at targeted sites and/or used for the establishment of mass-rearing colonies, the progeny of which will be released. -

For more than two decades the environmental risk of chemicals in general and pesticides in particular are assessed before these products can be marketed in the European Union. At about the same time when this assessment was codified in guidelines [1], the discussion about environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals just began within the scientific community [2]. Due to increasing evidence of potential side effects of certain pharmaceuticals in the environment, the European Union developed respective guidelines in the mid-nineties [3]. The focus on veterinary pharmaceuticals and especially parasiticides is caused by their direct entry into the environment, and their biocidal mode-of-action [4]. Cattle, sheep, pigs, and horses are treated regularly (metaphylactically as well as therapeutically) with veterinary pharmaceuticals used against endo- and ectoparasites, which often have a nematicidal or insecticidal mode- of-action [5]. In addition, these parasiticides can also impact ecosystem functions in the field, in particular the decomposition of dung [6, 7]. However, such side effects are not always detected [8, 9], which at least partly may be the result of using different and non-standardized methods. 2. Dung beetles (Family Scarabaeidae) are among the most abundant and species-rich organisms associated with fresh dung [2]. In close interaction with micro-organisms and other fauna (e.g., fly maggots, nematodes, oligochaetes) feeding, shredding, and burying of the pat by dung beetles accelerates its decomposition [10]. -
