Dear Colleagues and friends,

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 28th International Meeting of the Pedi- atric Colorectal Club, which will take place at the Zappeion Megaron in Athens, Greece from 28th to 30th August 2021.

Diseases of the colon and rectum in children such as anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, idiopathic constipation and fecal incontinence present a special chal- lenge to pediatric surgeons. Many of these diseases have a major impact on quality of life and warrant long-term follow-up and treatment into adulthood. In order to provide the best medical and surgical care to children with colorectal diseases, it is essential that we have the highest possible standards of education, training and research. The 28th International Meeting of the Pediatric Colorectal Club aims to provide up-to-date clinical and scientific information on all aspects of pediatric colorectal diseases and malformations to practicing pediatric surgeons, pediatric urologists, pediatricians, pediatric gas- troenterologists, basic scientists, nurses and patient support groups.

Athens is one of the most popular destinations in Europe, consistently featuring in all of the top ten most visited cities. Athens is also one of the world’s oldest cities, steeped in history and tradition, with numerous sightseeing treasures and excellent international transport links. The rich Greek heritage and its contemporary multicultural cosmopolitanism constitute Athens’ unique charm and character. The city’s myriad cultural offerings, archaeological sites, huge variety of attractions, a superb venue di- rectly located in the historic center and Greece’s undoubted appeals make Athens an ideal location for the 28th International Meeting of the Pediatric Colorectal Club.

We hope that many of you will be able to stay longer and participate in the 22nd European Congress of Pediatric Surgery, which will also take place at the Zappeion Megaron in Athens from 1st to 4th Septem- ber 2021.

SOCIAL DINNER

ATTIKOS GREEK HOUSE Sunday, 29th August 2021, 20:30

Address: Garivaldi 7, Acropolis, 117 42 , Athens https://ghattikos.gr/

The restaurant, known as the “Greek House” back in the ‘70s, was a hotspot of the Athenian life back then. Several years later the name “Attikos”, inspired by the cultural landscape of the surrounding area, was added to its initial name. By combining the heritage of the past with the constantly changing face of today, their desire for further progress keeps get- ting stronger. Having established family atmosphere and hospitable environment as the main philosophy of their business, without compromising the quality of food and service, ultimate goal of the business throughout all these years is to please the people who do not stop honoring the restaurant with their presence 6 MEETING VENUE

ZAPPEION CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION CENTER Zappeion (after the name of its benefactor, Evange- lis Zappas), was the first building (1888) to be erected specifically for the revival of the in the modern world (1896). The Zappeion Exhibition Hall has witnessed the history ATTIKOS GREEK HOUSE of Athens for the past 120 years. It has been a key site Sunday, 29th August 2021, 20:30 for some of the nation's most significant moments, like Greece’s accession to the European Economic Commu- nity in May 29, 1979. Zappeion has always been integrally linked to the Olympic Movement with the most recent renovation was carried out in connection with the Ath- ens Olympic Games of 2004 Even though its uses were varied: the coun- try's first state radio station, a hospital, store- house and later barracks it has become a landmark in the Greek capital, thus fulfilling the donor's initial wishes.

7 ATHENS

ATHENS is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age. In the 5th Century BC (the “Golden Age of Pericles”) – the culmination of Athens’ long, fascinating history – the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. Over the years, a multitude of conquerors occupied Athens, and erected unique, splendid monuments - a rare historical palimpsest. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and in two centuries since it has become an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm.

The “core” of the historic centre is the neighborhood (at the eastern side of the Acropolis), which has been inhabit- ed without interruption since antiquity. When you walk through the narrow labyrinthine streets lined with houses and mansions from the time of the Turkish occupation and the Neoclassical period (19th c.), you will have the impression of travelling with a “time machine”.

8 WORTH TO VISIT

• THE The Museum hosts its collections across three levels, as well as in the archaeological excavation that lies at its foundations. Located on the ground floor, the “Gallery of the Slopes of the Acropolis” houses finds from the sanctuaries that were established on the slopes of the Acropolis, as well as objects that Athenians used in everyday life from all historic periods. It also displays the votive offerings dedicated by the worshippers, such as the beautiful archaic Korai (depictions of young women), the Hippeis (horse riders), statues of the Goddess Athena, sculp- tures of male figures, marble reliefs, and smaller bronze and clay offerings. The Museum’s exhibition culminates on the third floor, in the glass-en- cased “Parthenon Gallery”. The relief sculptures of the Parthe- non frieze depicting the Panathenaic procession are exhibited in continuous sequence along the perimeter of the external surface of the rectangular concrete core of the Gallery. The me- topes, the marble slabs with relief representations from Greek mythology, are exhibited in between the stainless steel columns of the Gallery, which are the same in number as the columns of the Parthenon.

• PLAKA - THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF THE GODS Hugging the base of the Acropolis, the area extends from Filomousson Square, roughly at the intersec- tion of Kidathinaion and Adrianou Streets, down to . The best way to see Plaka is to simply wander its lanes, chasing glimpses of the Acropo- lis between the neoclassical buildings, Byzantine churches, cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The prime sights are, of course, the Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum. But do give yourself time to visit smaller gems that highlight less familiar aspects of Greek culture, like the Museum of Greek Folk Art, the Folk Instruments Museum and the fine private art and antiquities collections at the Frissiras and Kanellopoulos Museums.
