  • Geelong June 2021 (Pdf)
BULLETIN EDITOR – JUNE 2021 PRESIDENT Helen Lewis [email protected] Helen Lewis 0418534078 JUNE 2021 Here we are almost half way through the year and up to EOFY. Do you say, what? ( End of Financial Year). Have you noticed how many words with just initials (acronyms) are creeping into our vocabulary. When we get closer to June 30, EOFY will be flashed across our TV (television) with almost every ad (advertisement) that comes on, especially new cars and household goods. For example (e.g.) NAB, National Australia Bank, W for Westpac, CBA for Commonwealth Bank of Australia, sometimes it is CAN. HSBC Hong Kong and Singapore Banking Corporation. Bavarian Motor Works (BMW cars), although this one has been here for a long time. HIF, Health Insurance Fund, HBA Hospital Benefits Association. AAMI, Australian Associated Motor Insurance. In Geelong we have COGG (City of Greater Geelong), GMHBA, Geelong Medical and Hospital Benefits Association. Barwon Water was GW&ST, Geelong Waterworks and Sewerage Trust. Also if you walk around your neighbourhood you will see manholes (can I say that? Don’t get me started.) On them some have a big inverted comma for Vodaphone, also we get NBN, National Broadband Network, “Yes” for Optus and a large stylized T for Telstra. Once it was PMG, Post Master General, or as my dad always said “Pigs meat and gravy”, an off shoot of this is Australia Post and we all know why they call it “snail mail”, turn the logo on its side and it looks like a snail. Then there is our most well known, QANTAS (Queensland and Northern Territory Air Services).
