Onwonga Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology, University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya ABSTRACT Increasing water demands with limited supplies is a concern for agencies charged with its provision while observing equity and fairness. This paper aimed at calculating a simple water balance by equating water supplies to the demands in Mbagathi sub-catchment. Groundwater recharge was estimated using the soil water balance method while surface water supplies used Mbagathi river discharge data from stream-flow gauge stations 3AA04, 3AA06 and 3BA29. Survey data collected in 2015 using snowballing approach was used to quantify water demands. Change in groundwater storage in 2015 and 2014 was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lower at -0.4 and 1.3 million m3 respectively, compared to 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010 at 9.9, 11.9, 14.6 and 22.6 million m3, respectively. Reductions in groundwater storage from 2010-2015 were attributed to rise in demand, inefficient use, climatic variations characterized by low rainfall to recharge aquifers and limited exploitation of polished wastewater in the study area. Unsustainable water availability amidst over-reliance on groundwater and dominance in domestic and agricultural uses was observed in Mbagathi sub-catchment necessitating drastic water management measures. The study concluded that adopting water use efficient practices such as water harnessing, water re-use, soil and water conservation measures could ease pressure on existent supplies. -

1 "Kenya aims to be a nation living in a clean, secure, and sustainable environment by 2030" -Kenya Vision 2030 (GoK 2007) Chapter 1: Environment and Vision 2030 s a newly industrializing country, Kenya faces the challenge of improving its economic performance and the lives of its citizens without undermining the environment upon which Aso much of its national earnings and individual people’s livelihoods depend. This chapter introduces the theme of environmental change in Kenya through the lens of the country’s long-term national development plan known as Kenya Vision 2030. It looks at a select number of salient and emerging issues that need to be considered to achieve the Vision’s goals and targets, including how to protect the country’s water sources that feed hydropower, support wildlife and tourism destinations, irrigate both export and small holder farms, and nurture grazing areas. It also highlights the importance of planning for weather-related disasters to enable development goals to be achieved. Kenya’s Vision 2030 Kenya Vision 2030 is the country’s new development blueprint for the period 2008 to 2030. It aims to make Kenya a “middle income country providing high quality life for all its citizens by the year 2030”. The fi rst phase of the Kenya Vision 2030 covers the period 2008 to 2012 during which a number of “fl agship” projects will be implemented. Vision 2030 is based on three pillars: the economic pillar, the social pillar, and the political pillar. The moist tropics - wet rainforest and high altitude areas - experience a surplus of water which is distant from human settlement uses, and as a consequence water systems are relatively natural but their problems relate to reservoir and river regulation schemes. The arid tropics in contrast, are often those areas where human development is concentrated, increasing pressure upon limited natural water cycles and water stores through pollution and regulation as well as creating new ones. -

Daily surface runoff, lateral flow, and groundwater flow were first simulated with SWAT for the period (1978-1987) using climate variables from Egerton University weather station and LULC of 1978. The daily hydrologic variables simulated without calibration and validation of SWAT and observed discharge data were then used for ANN training, which led to the creation of discharge generation hybrid models for the dry, wet and wetter seasons. SWAT_ANN models generated discharges were compared with observed data and the performance rating were achieved at R2 (0.94, 0.91, 0.92) and NSE (0.89, 0.87, 0.87) for DJFM, AMJJ, and ASON seasons respectively. -

Abstract Njoro River, which is the primary freshwater source for the urban and rural-based residents within its basin, has been subjected to increasing anthropogenic pressure that threatens its ecological and socio-economic values. An empirical study was conducted in the mid reaches of this river to determine the effect of organic effluents on water quality and benthic macroinvertebrate community structure. Organic pollutants input into the river can lead to immense ecosystem impairment. The effect of organic effluents on water quality was assessed in this study using a combination of physico-chemical parameters and benthic macroinvertebrate community structure. -

Since that time my interest in fishing and exploring has taken me to Alaska where I lived and worked for fifteen years in the salmon fishing and seafood processing industry and on the North Slope with an oilfield service company. I now operate a small industrial design studio in Seattle. My background of a childhood spent on the shores of East and Central Africa’s waterways has made me keenly aware of the surrounding natural history of the region and my love for explor- ing and sport fishing gives me the strength to provide an accurate account of the thrills that await the adventuresome angler. Combining a safari and sport fishing is still a new concept to most travelers to Africa. My goal is to help alleviate some of the logistics involved and prepare the way for a successful angling safari to Kenya. I have described the techniques best suited to fish Africa’s lakes and rivers and knowing local African languages enables me to share the methods used by local fishermen. The Ultimate Fishing Safari gives me an opportunity to share some of the unique experiences I have enjoyed, a life few people in this world have known. -

'190S· [All rights reJerved] PREFACE IN the following pages I have endeavoured to give some account of the British East Africa Protectorate, that is, roughly speaking, our. territories between Lake Victoria and the Indian Ocean, whose value is only now beginning to be understood. While omitting no aspect o( the country which seemed likely to prove interesting, my special object has been to point . out the opportunity which it offers for European colonisation and the interesting effect which such a colony may have on the future development of Africa. After a brief historical retrospect, I have devoted three chapters to an account of the physical features of the country. Much of the ter_ritory is still imperfectly known, and even those who have claims to special knowledge are continually surprised by the discovery of new districts, healthy, fertile, and suitable as a residence for Europeans. In this year.. though six weeks of it have not yet elapsed, I have received reports of two such districts in parts of the Protectorate which were supposed to be barren, one in the north of the Rift Valley, and one near the western extremity of the German boundary. After giving some a~count of the country, I have touched on the various tribes which compose the somewhat scanty native population, and then, assuming that the reader has acquii-ed a sufficient acquaintance with the lie of the land and tha character of its inhabitants, have proceeded to dis~ cuss the prospects which it holds out to intending colonists, and such questions as climate, health, and products. -
