Vangelis Trigas Music Ensemble Vangelis Trigas Music Ensemble “Optima” Music Performance Vangelis Trigas Music Ensemble Vangelis Trigas Music Ensemble “Optima” Music Performance Vangelis Trigas and his music ensemble present the music performance “Optima”. The soloist and composer selects songs and instrumentals from various kinds of Greek and foreign music and introduces his own instrumental compositions all tuned together, offering a modern view of folk orchestra and at the same time of Greek music. As a soloist, Vangelis Trigas ventures to reassess bouzouki to its audience, underlining its broaden role and its potentials by a different, refined sound. He integrates harmonically bouzouki in the ensemble among the classical instruments - cello, classical guitar, contrabass, piano, mandolin. The new features in the orchestration, the new compositions, the remixes and adaptations have creatively assimilated different elements that altogether file a new music proposal. In total, it is a very interesting and of high aesthetics version of Greek and foreign music in which bouzouki has the leading role in a completely different hearing. The duration of the concert is two hours and together with Vangelis Trigas also perform: Theodore Broutzakis - Piano Margarita Karamolegou - Vocalist Alexandros Kasartzis - Cello George Didahos - Classical guitar Labros Koukouvis - Mandolin, Bouzouki Antonis Tzikas - Contrabass Vangelis Trigas Vangelis Trigas is a soloist, composer, bouzouki tutor and a researcher of Greek folk music. He was born in Argos, Greece and from a very early age he had the life changing influence on bouzouki from his father, an amateur bouzouki player. He began his career at the early age of 15. Collaborations As a soloist, he has worked with the most well known quality singers and musicians (Maria Farantouri, George Dalaras, Haris Alexiou, Dimitris Mitropanos, Manolis Mitsias, Mary Linda, Manolis Lidakis, Vassilis Lekkas, Gerasimos Andreatos, et al) and with some of them he gave concerts in the most important music stages and theatres in Greece and abroad, (Herodeion-Megaron of Athens and Salonica - Munich Philarmonic-Wiener Konzerthaus etal). In 2015 he collaborated with the” Neue Philarmonie Westfalen” and the “Universitatschor Essen” choir, while in 2016 he collaborated with the Nis Symphony Orchestra Teaching-Bibliography A very important part in his career is dedicated in teaching. A breakthrough for him personally and equally for bouzouki, was the deep research and study of the instrument, which resulted in a well-documented technique, followed by an integrated curriculum, equal to the ones of classical instruments. This work is contained in the three issues of the teaching Method, “Vangelis Trigas - Method for three string Bouzouki Vol 1,2,3”, a complete teaching method for Bouzouki. In his effort to spread this new teaching method for bouzouki, he has been giving since 2000 seminars through Skype and other Internet platforms. Ηis research and the recording study data he has done all these years resulted to 33 music books that are included in the series “Folk Composers”, “ Rembetika and Folk songs” “Artistic Folk Songs”, “Bouzouki Instrumentals”. This is the first time that the most important Greek folk songs and instrumentals are written down in notes and music sheets from their very original first recordings. These books are also part of the teaching curriculum. Recordings He has recorded seven personal CD’s, three of which contain his own instrumental compositions for bouzouki while the others are live concert recordings. He has also participated in many recordings of other famous artists such as the exceptional recordings from Megaron of Athens and Herodeion Theatre with George Dalaras. A milestone for Vangelis Trigas is the CD “OPTIMA” that contain his latest compositions and was released in 2016. There, one can see clearly his refreshing ideas on bouzouki and the efforts to reposition this wonderful folk instrument in folk music. Vangelis Trigas Ensemble Under the same refreshing perspective Vangelis Trigas originated his music ensemble that give concerts in cultural establishments and festivals in Greece and abroad. The main goal of the ensemble is to promote bouzouki, the national Greek instrument and the Greek folk music in general. In these concerts the soloist selects the most valued songs from Greece and abroad, presents his compositions and strives to re-introduce Bouzouki and place its particular sound in harmony with the other instruments of his ensemble, mostly consisted of classical instruments cello, classical guitar, contrabass, piano and mandolin. Vangelis Trigas strives through this effort to introduce bouzouki to the audience from scratch, producing at the same time a new sound that harmonically co-exists with the other classical instruments, cello-classical guitar-contrabass-piano-mandolin. The combination of the refined folk elements from bouzouki on one hand and the classical outcome of the other instruments on the othe, result to a very interesting and of high artistic value new version of Greek folk music which is at the same time a new proposal. youTube links: Hasapikos Horos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8W-ykqNag4 I Marianthi ton anemon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ljzw7AawQPE&feature=youtu.be O Kir Adonis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqAS2EeCil4&feature=youtu.be Sto Lavrio ginete horos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1pGLUhmnEA&feature=youtu.be Canzone Arrabbiata https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQc0quUBmCc&feature=youtu.be Latin (Instrumental) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfzfj2dTqGM&feature=youtu.be Ostria ( Instrumental) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAIm8F3olCo Pios ti zoi mou https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1uj0aUnDWY Laos kai Kolonaki https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pdYoJeUl-c&feature=youtu.be O minas exei ennia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMaRWWnXQSw&feature=youtu.be Akrogialies deilina https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hKaByIwl10&feature=youtu.be Andra mou paei https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooef9HnfRMk&feature=youtu.be I magissa tis arapias https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvNaSA3D59s&feature=youtu.be Taximi minore kai alegro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUAq1EAbrhk&feature=youtu.be Vangelis Trigas Music Ensemble “Optima” Music Performance www.trigas.gr e-mail: [email protected] Τ: 0030 6944 788 422.

BODIES IN THE MARGINS Refiguring the Rebetika as Literature Sophia Schlesinger Faculty Advisor: Andrea Kaston-Tange Macalester English Department Submitted April 25th, 2020 Abstract This thesis engages a literary analysis of a corpus of songs and recordings known as the rebetika (sing. rebetiko), which prospered in the port districts of major cities throughout the Aegean in the early 20th century. Engaging the rebetika as literary texts, I argue, helps us understand how they have functioned as a kind of pressure point on the borders between nation and Other. Without making unproveable biographical claims about the motives of the music progenitors, I examine why so many have reached for the rebetika as texts with which to articulate various political and cultural desires. Using a multidisciplinary theoretical framework that includes Elaine Scarry, Stuart Hall, Edward Said, Mark C.

  • Music Genres and Corporate Cultures
Music Genres and Corporate Cultures Music Genres and Corporate Cultures explores the workings of the music industry, tracing the often uneasy relationship between entertainment cor- porations and the artists they sign. Keith Negus examines the contrasting strategies of major labels like Sony and Universal in managing different genres, artists and staff, and assesses the various myths of corporate cul- ture. How do takeovers affect the treatment of artists? Why was Poly- Gram perceived as too European to attract US artists? Why and how did EMI Records attempt to change their corporate culture? Through a study of three major genres—rap, country and salsa—Negus investigates why the music industry recognises and rewards certain sounds, and how this influences both the creativity of musicians and their audiences. He explores why some artists get international promotion while others are neglected, and how performers are packaged as ‘world music’. Negus examines the tension between rap’s image as a spontaneous ‘music of the streets’ and the practicalities of the market, asks why execu- tives from New York feel uncomfortable when they visit the country music business in Nashville, and explains why the lack of soundscan sys- tems in Puerto Rican record shops affects salsa’s position on the US Bill- board chart. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with music industry per- sonnel in Britain, the United States and Japan, Music Genres and Corpo- rate Cultures shows how the creation, circulation and consumption of popular music is shaped by record companies and corporate business style while stressing that music production takes place within a broader cul- ture, not totally within the control of large corporations.
