Commodore's Corner VOLUME 1 June 2016 Commodore’s Corner As June arrives, the activity at the Club is increasing. The marina is full of boats and the pool is opened. Soon, the junior sailors will be starting their instruction and the swim team will be training. It is great to see the Club come back to life. The Commodore’s Ball will be held on June 11, 2016 this year. Chef David has planned a delightful menu and music will be provided by the Southford Falls Quartet. I’m sure that it will be a wonderful evening. Please make reservations as it always helps the team plan for the events. The annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held on June 19, 2016. Please come down and see the boats dressed in their flags. This event is open to the public and is a showcase for our Club. On June 16, 2016, the Currituck, a self-propelled split-hulled dredging vessel will begin dredging the channel entering the harbor. The dredging activity is permitted until June 29, 2016. The vessel and its crew work twelve hour days and will be working each day. The Club will be assisting the process by allowing the Currituck to tie up to our dock when the day’s work is done. Thanks to Harbor Master Bruce S. Kuryla and Harbor Commission Member, John Nevin, P.C. for their tireless efforts in making this happen. Congratulations to Josh Revkin, who recently achieved a number of successes in international Star Class racing. Josh came in third at the 2016 Star World Championship in Miami crewing for US Finn Dinghy Olympian Brian Ledbetter and second at the Star Sailors League City Grand Slam Regatta in Hamburg, Germany crewing for Norwegian Starboat Olympian Eiv and Melleby. Josh now holds the number one crew ranking for the USA in the Star Sailors League. Josh started his starboat racing career at MYC, crewing for David Bolles. Finally, as I write this letter, Dr. Mark R. Laser, Fady Khairallah, Lou Roberts and Eric Stanley are on the second leg of the ARC Europe 2016 Rally making their way to the Azores. Many of us are tracking their progress on line. www.worldcruising.com/arc_europe/arceuropeitinerary.aspx. Rear Commodore Robert Colum and Brian Williams are back with stories from the voyage from Portsmouth, Virginia to Bermuda, where First Light finished first in its class. We continue to wish them fair winds and following seas. John MacCausland and Phil Trinter continue to lead the fleet with an impressive 7 point lead, guaranteeing the team will win the regatta as long as they earn a top 7 finish in the final race tomorrow. With the completion of five races, the sailors are each granted one throw out race, where their worst finishing place is removed from their total score. Therefore today’s race was one of the most important races in the series and the combination of aggressive sailors, wind shifts and unexpected changes in wind strength made Race 5 even more challenging than the previous days races.

  • Local Star Class Newsletter
Volume 4, No. 3 March, 2003 Star Class Newsletter for the 1st, 2nd and 12th Districts MARCH REGATTA SCHEDULE level of the fleet. The left side of the course seemed to pay (as has been true for most of this Winter it seems). The top 5th District boats placed well with pure boat speed and great boat March 15-16 Spring Gold Cup (NHYC) handling. Freddy Lööf and Anders Ekstrom, sailing a new March 21-23 ABYC OCR Folli (8128), made it clear that they are "in the game" by 20th District posting 2 impressive wins in tough conditions. Peter Mar 2-7 Bacardi Cup Bromby and Lee White were followed by Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljedahl with podium finishes. The rest of the top ten was a "who's who" of the International Star LET THE GAMES BEGIN! Class. With 59 boats participating in the Biscayne Trophy The really great thing about the Star Class is that there was Regatta (often referred to as The Zag in honor of Frank great racing for the entire Fleet. Boats were well sailed, the Zagarino) and 68 boats in the Miami OCR the Florida starting lines are intense and the action across the course season got into full swing. The wind gods were fickle for was what we all have come to expect from a great both regattas which made both series real challenges. Here weekend in Miami sailing in the Star Class. we have reports from Nelson Stephenson for the Biscayne For the results see page 2. Trophy Regatta and Mark Reynolds for the Miami OCR.
