WIRRAL RAMBLERS SUNDAY 22nd JANUARY 2006 BETWS-Y-COED (BETWS-Y-COED) A WALK From Llanrwst we head west over fields then ascend steeply through forest to reach minor road and path which takes us to Penrallt. From here we descend to the footbridge which crosses the Afon Crafnant. A short stretch of minor road brings us to the Gelli Plantation which we pass through to reach Lledwigan, from here we climb up to Pen-y-Graig then descend south through woodland to Hendre. Skirting the south west end of Llyn Crafnant we eventually pick up forest tracks and paths heading in a south easterly direction to reach the Miners Bridge, from here we follow the path alongside the River Llugwy back to Betws-y-Coed. (1point added for terrain) DISTANCE: 21km (13miles) 19 POINTS ASCENT 710m (2330ft) B PLUS WALK From Llanrwst we take paths and lanes to Llanrhychwyn. From here forests paths initially south and then south easterly take us to Hafna Mine. A westerly path then leads to the dam and eventually Tal- y- llyn. More forest paths lead us to Llyn Crafnant. Good paths lead us up and over ridge where we then descend south towards Capel Curig. At footbridge we head east through forests back to Betws-y-Coed. DISTANCE: 19.3km (12 miles) 16 POINTS ASCENT 550m (1800ft) B MINUS WALK Starting in the centre of Betws-y-Coed we walk south, then southeast, through the forest to reach Llyn Elsi. We turn north to reach a Memorial, where we may have lunch. We then walk to the south end of Llyn Elsi and continue south past Llanerch Elsi. Turning west we reach Cwmcelyn and continue west to Rhiw Goch. We turn northeast following the Roman Road (Sarn Helen). North of Ty-Mawr we turn west then north to reach Maes-Newyddion. We follow paths through forest, leading to the A5 and cross the road descending to the Miner’s Bridge. Turning east we follow the Afon Llugwy to Betws-y-Coed. (1 point added for rough terrain) DISTANCE: 13.7km (8½ miles) 12 POINTS ASCENT 335m (1100ft) C WALK From Betws-y-Coed we head for the Miner’s Bridge then take a footpath to Rhiwddolion and head eastward to Llyn Elsi for lunch. We then return to Rhiwddolion and descend to Hafoty and follow a track to the main road by the Ugly House (Ty-Hyll). From here we follow a footpath along the River Llugwy back to Betws-y-Coed. DISTANCE: 12.9km (8 miles) 9½ POINTS ASCENT 215m (700ft) D WALK From Betws-y-Coed we follow a path by the Afon Llugwy to the Miner’s Bridge. Crossing this and the A5 we ascend southward by some waterfalls and an old quarry to Hafod-las and the west side of Llyn Elsi. Then turning northeast, through forest, we return to town. DISTANCE: 7.8km (5 miles) 6½ POINTS ASCENT 220m (720ft) Please keep behind your leader at all times WALKS SHOULD NOT RETURN TO THE COACH NO COACH STOP COACH WILL BEFORE 3.30pm DEPART AT 5.00pm NO SMOKING ON THE COACH, THANK YOU.
