Image Release 29 October 2019 BIRMINGHAM ROYAL BALLET AUTUMN SEASON Birmingham Royal Ballet today release brand new images for their autumn season engagement at Sadler’s Wells; featuring a fitting balance of classical and contemporary ballet from Giselle to a Mixed Bill including the World Premiere of the latest Ballet Now commission and a partnership with Ballet Black. New production images available to download here Autumn 2019 could be described as a ‘bridge season’ during which Birmingham Royal Ballet moves towards the arrival of Carlos Acosta as Director in January 2020. The season is also classic BRB with its balance of classical and contemporary works; Giselle and a Mixed Bill (featuring the latest Ballet Now commission plus a partnership with Ballet Black) complete a three-venue autumn tour this week at London’s Sadler’s Wells. Mixed Bill: A Brief Nostalgia; The Suit; Nine Sinatra Songs Sadler’s Wells, 29-30 October The fourth commission from BRB’s ground-breaking Ballet Now initiative is A Brief Nostalgia by rising young choreographer and Queensland Ballet dancer Jack Lister. Featuring a new score by award-winning Scottish (and first-time ballet score) composer Tom Harrold, this London premiere will open the exciting and eclectic mixed bill before Ballet Black – fresh from their staggering performance with Stormzy at Glastonbury - will take to the stage to perform Cathy Marston’s critically acclaimed The Suit, inspired by Can Themba’s South African fable. This is my first season as Director and I am delighted to be forging partnerships with arts organisations across the City, including Sean Foley and the team here at The REP. This season of ballets, all new to our repertory, features the specially commissioned Lazuli Sky by Birmingham-born choreographer Will Tuckett. This uplifting piece, using state-of-the-art technology, is set against two ballets that I am thrilled to introduce to the Company. Our Waltzes, which I performed aged 18, is a beautiful, Carlos Acosta. © Johan Persson technically challenging piece, and Liebestod is a stunning solo which puts our male dancers firmly in the spotlight. No. 493 - December 2015 President: Vice President: Simon Russell Beale CBE Nickolas Grace Move Over Kate Moss Daphne Selfe – our own VWA’s Supermodel – is celebrating the success of her recently published book The Way We Wore – A Life in Clothes. She is busy doing interviews for press and radio and talks at book festivals about her experiences in the fashion industry. Her response to this (unexpected super- model status at 87 years of age!) is, as she puts it, “Such fun!” She has travelled up and down the country and, by and large, her book has been very favourably received. Her next booking is at Lewes in Sussex on December 6th. She was recently in Paris for a Japanese beauty campaign which comes out in Spring 2016. Daphne comments, “I have had some nice reviews, such as ‘very readable - can't put it down’ and ‘a vivid and inspiring memoir’. I could never have imagined this interest and fame at my time of life”. Daphne, undoubtedly, is a woman who has always embraced life and continues to do so well into her ninth decade. She is an inspiration to us all. Sir Peter Wright The Vic-Wells Association sends congratulations to Sir Peter Wright on his 89th birthday. It was not a rest-day for him, as he spent it late into the evening supervising a dress rehearsal of his Birmingham Royal Ballet production of The Nutcracker. However, the full cast, and others involved in the show, sang "Happy Birthday to You", accompanied by an "extra chorus" of BRB Friends who were attending the rehearsal.
