This is my first season as Director and I am delighted to be forging partnerships with arts organisations across the City, including Sean Foley and the team here at The REP. This season of ballets, all new to our repertory, features the specially commissioned Lazuli Sky by Birmingham-born choreographer Will Tuckett. This uplifting piece, using state-of-the-art technology, is set against two ballets that I am thrilled to introduce to the Company. Our Waltzes, which I performed aged 18, is a beautiful, Carlos Acosta. © Johan Persson technically challenging piece, and Liebestod is a stunning solo which puts our male dancers firmly in the spotlight. I hope you enjoy this production – if you would like to watch it again, alongside insights into the creative process, it will be available online for seven days from noon on 1 November. In response, the Company pledged to keep bringing world-class ballet to their audiences through a new Pay As You Feel Digital Season. To date the season has been watched by over 200,000 people and attracted donations of over £20,000. The Company is set to face a loss of over £1M in box office income due to COVID-19 which may impact their ability to pay their workforce, many of whom are freelancers, as well as their ability to present new ballets. Whilst theatres remain dark, the Company aims to continue making their performances available online and on TV, encouraging audiences to donate when they watch, if they are able. Cinderella is a universal story which has been re-written and retold in many different countries and cultures around the world. The oldest account of the story is from China, dating back to the 9th century AD. The well-known classic fairy tale was written by Charles Perrault and published in France as Cendrillon in 1697. Cendrillon told the story of a virtuous girl, whose mother dies, resulting in her being treated inhumanely by her family. In the end she is rescued by magical love from her mother beyond the grave.
