  • Tax Irregularities of Bowl Championship Series
TAX IRREGULARITIES OF BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES ORGANIZATIONS ABOUT PLAYOFF PAC Launched with support from key Members of Congress in October 2009, Playoff PAC is the principal opposition group to college football’s Bowl Championship Series. Playoff PAC’s website is located at www.PlayoffPAC.com. Playoff PAC is a federal political committee dedicated to establishing a competitive post- season championship for college football. The Bowl Championship Series is inherently flawed. It crowns champions arbitrarily and stifles inter-conference competition. Fans, players, schools, and corporate sponsors will be better served when the BCS is replaced with an accessible playoff system that recognizes and rewards on-the-field accomplishment. To that end, Playoff PAC helps elect pro-reform political candidates, mobilizes public support, and provides a centralized source of pro-reform news, thought, and scholarship. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Playoff PAC thanks all members of its volunteer team and its Board of Directors for contributing to this report, with special appreciation to Cole Nielsen Design for their work on the graphic layout. © Playoff Political Action Committee, Inc. 2010 P.O. • EXPLORING the BRAND IDENTITY CREATION of FEMALE ATHLETES: the CASE of JENNIE FINCH and CAT OSTERMAN a Dissertation by JAMI NICO
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Texas A&M Repository EXPLORING THE BRAND IDENTITY CREATION OF FEMALE ATHLETES: THE CASE OF JENNIE FINCH AND CAT OSTERMAN A Dissertation by JAMI NICOLE LOBPRIES Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Gregg Bennett Committee Members, George Cunningham Summer Odom Jon Welty-Peachy Head of Department, Richard Kreider August 2014 Major Subject: Kinesiology Copyright 2014 Jami Nicole Lobpries ABSTRACT In the context of human branding, athletes have become viable brands capable of providing empirical support for scholarly and industry endeavors. To add to our conceptual understanding of athlete branding and particularly in the context of female athletes, this qualitative case study investigated the brand identity creation and brand building strategies used by two female athletes, Jennie Finch and Cat Osterman, and their management teams to leverage their brand equity. Further, due to the gendered nature of sport, this case study assessed the perceived barriers female athletes face in the brand building process. Guided by brand identity theory and social role theory, interviews were conducted with Finch, Osterman, three female agents who manage female athletes’ brands, and four softball players from various levels of the softball community. Findings from this case study provide empirical support for using brand identity theory to assess the creation of an athlete’s brand identity and strategies for positioning, communicating, and leveraging the athlete’s brand. Themes shaping brand identity creation included identifying core values, brand personality, and brand associations.

  • THE BOWL 'CHARITY' SERIES the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) Plays a Major Role in the World of College Athletics. Every
THE BOWL ‘CHARITY’ SERIES The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) plays a major role in the world of college athletics. Every year, the BCS decides the NCAA Division I football National Champion. The BCS is comprised of four “Bowl Organizations” that each enjoy 501(c)(3) tax exempt status as charitable public benefit organizations, and each has done so since World War II. These Bowl Organizations are the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the Fiesta Bowl. The IRS, in their Letters of Recognition of 501(c)(3) status to each Bowl Organization, states that the public benefit these organizations offer is “educational.” Despite being considered “charitable” organizations for tax purposes, the BCS Bowl Organizations are currently under attack for instead serving private interests. Although the actual percentage of revenues a “charitable” organization donates to charitable causes is not a true indicia of being considered a “charitable organization” for 501(c)(3) status, it is a good measurement to compare with an organization’s other expenditures. In 2011, the BCS held 23 bowl games that produced $186.3 million. The total charitable contribution for the BCS was $3.2 million, or a mere 1.7% of revenue. When considering whether a Bowl Organization fails the private inurement requirement of the operational test for 501(c)(3) status, it will not “look good” if the organization paid its Executive Officers more in salary and benefits than money they donated to charitable causes.1 The most criticized Bowl Organization of the four is surely the Fiesta Bowl. In the last Fiesta Bowl on January 2013, the Oregon Ducks defeated the Kansas State Wildcats in Glendale, AZ.

OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL OU POSTGAME NOTES No. 10/12/10 OKLAHOMA 27, NO. 6/8/8 IOWA STATE 21 • DEC. 19, 2020 GENERAL NOTES • Oklahoma’s Big 12 title marked its sixth straight and 14th in the 25-year history of the league. The Sooners now have 50 conference championships, the most among FBS programs (Nebraska ranks second with 46). • This year’s Oklahoma squad is the fifth in program history to win a conference title with two league losses. The previous four occasions it happened were in 1976 (5-2 in Big Eight; shared with Colorado and Oklahoma State) and 2002, 2007 and 2010 (6-2 in Big 12; won Big 12 Championship games). Before this season, no OU team had ever won a conference title after a 0-2 league start. • Oklahoma’s current streak of six straight outright league championships is the longest among current Power Five programs since Oklahoma won 12 in a row from 1948 to ’59 under Bud Wilkinson. Clemson, which plays later today, is also riding a five-game outright streak [ACC]). The Sooners also won or shared nine consecutive conference titles from 1972 to ’80. • OU is now 11-1 in Big 12 Championship games, and has more Big 12 Championship game wins than any other program has appearances. It has played in 12 of the league’s 19 title games. Nebraska and Texas rank second with six appearances each. • Lincoln Riley set the record for most wins in the first four seasons of an OU heading coaching career. He is now 44-8 (.846), one more than the number of wins by Bob Stoops (43-9) in his first four seasons (1999-2002).
