Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012 Founder member of Deep Purple, Jon Lord was born in Leicester. He began playing piano aged 6, studying classical music until leaving school at 17 to become a Solicitor’s clerk. Initially leaning towards the theatre, Jon moved to London in 1960 and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, winning a scholarship, and paying for food and lodgings by performing in pubs. In 1963 he broke away from the school with a group of teachers and other students to form the pioneering London Drama Centre. A year later, Jon “found himself“ in an R and B band called The Artwoods (fronted by Ronnie Wood’s brother, Art) where he remained until the summer of 1967. During this period, Jon became a much sought after session musician recording with the likes of Elton John, John Mayall, David Bowie, Jeff Beck and The Kinks (eg 'You Really Got Me'). In December 1967, Jon met guitarist Richie Blackmore and by early 1968 the pair had formed Deep Purple. The band would pioneer hard rock and go on to sell more than 100 million albums, play live to more than 10 million people, and were recognized in 1972 by The Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest group in the world”. Deep Purple’s debut LP “Shades of Deep Purple” (1968) generated the American Top 5 smash hit “Hush”. In 1969, singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover joined and the band’s sound became heaver and more aggressive on “Deep Purple in Rock” (1970), where Jon developed a groundbreaking new way of amplifying the sound of the Hammond organ to match the distinctive sound of the electric guitar. -

This song was “stuck together” from three different, unfinished compositions. This included a laundry list of John’s opinions on his lost beliefs (namely people and philosophies). This was the song that confirmed the Beatles were over – John revealed he didn’t believe in the band, nor was Paul the walrus. John finally reveals that he was indeed the walrus. 1974 UK Record Releases by Date This is a list of all UK 45 singles and EP’s found on the 45 cat website and any new release sheets as of the 25/10/16. Generally records that don't have a full release are not included. Some spoken word only records are not listed, plus “story” ones. Records that would have had a specific week when they were first released, but which dates have not been found, but are known to have been issued on an actual month are included at the end of each weekly listing for the month in question. Numbers in red indicate ownership on 45 cat for those with 5 or more. In some cases, such as chart hits, the number of “wants” is added on. Caution should be noted with ownership figure, as the record might have only been available as a promo record that wasn’t issued to the public. These however will be popular with collectors of records. If it is known to be never issued to the public, what is called on the 45 Cat site as a “stock” record. Then that will not be included. In some cases records by well known acts were never issued as “stock” and some of these have been included, but such records are shown as “promo only”. They are included to show that the record couldn’t have made the charts in 1974. At least as a UK issue! Records that made the charts of the time are only stated where no specific week has been found or if a chart record fails to score 5 ownership indications - indicated by the term hit. -

This flavour is quite natural: it is in Russia that you can find the greatest team of Heep fans in the world, who love their idols with the most pure and faithful love! It is not by chance that there is very little, if any, slang or colloquialisms in the way Russians speak about Heep, because for us Heep is not the matter of consumption but rather the matter of sincere and warm relationship. -

But there was one group that towered above their competitors for their outstanding musical quality, and it was another band from Liverpool, The Remo Four. In the early and mid-sixties the Remo Four became backing musicians for solo singers – and were among the best bands to ever touch the hallowed stage of the legendary Hamburg club. By 1967, they were among the best bands from Eng- land. Charismatic singer/organ player Tony Ashton (1944-2001) and guitarist Colin Manley (1942-1999) were brilliant instrumentalists, and their solos were solidly backed by the band's rhythm section: ace drummer Roy Dyke and bass-player Phil Rogers. The Remo Four were the first among equals with an excellent fusion of rhythm, blues, brass-free soul and even gospel snippets – with Tony proving how such a mixture could be sung perfectly and soulfully alike.
