George Harrison – My Sweet Lord - All Things Must Pass ‘70 This was the major smash hit of the album by Christmas 1970. It was originally intended for the Edwin Hawkins Singers (who had record, “Oh Happy Day,” which greatly influenced “My Sweet Lord.” George had also let Billy Preston release his own version before George’s – but it was George’s version that was the huge hit and remains the biggest single song success of his entire solo career. 4 Ringo – Oh My Lord – Choose Love John Lennon – God - Plastic Ono Band ‘70 This was the definitive track on the LP. This song was “stuck together” from three different, unfinished compositions. This included a laundry list of John’s opinions on his lost beliefs (namely people and philosophies). This was the song that confirmed the Beatles were over – John revealed he didn’t believe in the band, nor was Paul the walrus. John finally reveals that he was indeed the walrus. Luther Dixon and Wes Farrell’s song was originally recorded by The Shirelles and was the b-side to their smash hit “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” This song was usually Ringo’s contribution at The Beatles’ live performances during their North American Tour in the summer of 1964. On U.S. albums: 11 Introducing… The Beatles - Vee-Jay LP The Early Beatles - Capitol LP The Beatles - If I Fell - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John and Paul John Lennon’s stunning ballad “If I Fell” was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from “This Boy” with its similar chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded – at their request – together on one microphone. Performed live on their world tour throughout the summer of 1964. Completed in 15 takes on February 27, 1964. Flip side of “And I Love Her” in the U.S. On U.S. album: A Hard Day’s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - I’ve Just Seen A Face - Help! (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul at the Asher family home on Wimpole Street. Paul had the tune prior to coming up with the lyrics and originally named the song “Auntie Gin’s Theme” because his aunt liked it. George Martin’s instrumental “Help!” album includes an orchestrated version of “I’ve Just Seen A Face” using the title “Auntie Gin’s Theme.” Recorded in six takes at the same June 14, 1965 McCartney-dominated session that produced “Yesterday” and “I’m Down.” One of only five Beatles songs Paul chose to perform live on his Wings Over America tour in 1976. On U.S. album: 12 Rubber Soul - Capitol LP BEATLES NEWS HERE W/ JACKIE 10.27 BREAK Bumper/ The Beatles - The Word - Rubber Soul (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Recorded in three takes at a late night session starting on November 10, 1965 that ran until 4 a.m. the next morning. Overdubs include Paul on piano, George Martin on harmonium, and Ringo playing the maracas. The song is a full collaboration between Lennon and McCartney, and began as an attempt to write a song based around a single note. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP George on LOVE 13 George Harrison – The Lord Loves The One (That Loves The Lord) - Living In The Material World ‘73 A lengthy-titled composition has a promising introduction, but fails to live up to George’s standards. It was also played live (for one night only) in 1974 and was sent packing with “Who Can See It.” The Beatles - All You Need Is Love - Non-LP track (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John The Beatles’ fifteenth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. Written by John Lennon especially for the first-ever worldwide television transmission. The epic event, a 6-hour program entitled “Our World,” featured segments linking 24 countries in five continents via satellite, with a potential of 400 million viewers. The Beatles were honored to be invited to represent Great Britain in the program. For the event, they would premiere a brand new song written just for the occasion. John Lennon’s “All You Need Is Love” became the anthem of 1967, the summer of love. To decrease the chances of an on-air foul-up, George Martin had the Beatles play to their own pre-recorded rhythm track. Only the vocals, bass guitar, lead guitar solo in the middle eight, drums and orchestra would be live. Recording began on June 14, 1967 at Olympic Studios. In all, 33 takes of the basic rhythm track and a few vocals were completed this evening. Overdubbing the lead and backing vocals took place on June 19. The orchestra was recorded for the first time on June 23. On June 24, the day before the event, it was decided that “All You Need Is Love” would be issued as the new 14 Beatles single as soon as possible after the program aired the evening of June 25. Guests in the studio during the performance included the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the Who’s Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, Marianne Faithfull, Donovan wore colorful mod clothing. The 13 orchestra members wore formal evening attire. After the guests left the studio, additional overdubs were made to what was now take 58. Ringo added the now-familiar snare drum roll to the song’s introduction and John re- recorded part of his vocal. Chris Farley on LOVE The Beatles – Golden Slumbers - Abbey Road Recorded w/ “Carry That Weight” as one song on July 2nd 1969 Based on a 400 year old poem by Thomas Decker whose original words were: Golden Slumbers kiss your eyes; Smiles awake you when you rise.

1 Playlist Nov. 13th 2016 LIVE! From DUKES in Malibu 9AM / OPEN Three hours non stop uninterrupted Music from JPG&R…as we broadcast LIVE from DUKES in Malibu…. John Lennon – Steel and Glass - Walls And Bridges ‘74 Much like “How Do You Sleep” three years earlier, this is another blistering Lennon track that sets its sights on Allen Klein (who had contributed lyrics to “How Do You Sleep” those few years before). The Beatles - Revolution 1 - The Beatles 2 The first song recorded during the sessions for the “White Album.” At the time of its recording, this slower version was the only version of John Lennon’s “Revolution,” and it carried that titled without a “1” or a “9” in the title. Recording began on May 30, 1968, and 18 takes were recorded. On the final take, the first with a lead vocal, the song continued past the 4 1/2 minute mark and went onto an extended jam. It would end at 10:17 with John shouting to the others and to the control room “OK, I’ve had enough!” The final six minutes were pure chaos with discordant instrumental jamming, plenty of feedback, percussive clicks (which are heard in the song’s introduction as well), and John repeatedly screaming “alright” and moaning along with his girlfriend, Yoko Ono. Ono also spoke random streams of consciousness on the track such as “if you become naked.” This bizarre six-minute section was clipped off the version of what would become “Revolution 1” to form the basis of “Revolution 9.” Yoko’s “naked” line appears in the released version of “Revolution 9” at 7:53.

“Carnegie Hall Concert with Buck Owens and His Buckaroos”—Buck Owens and His Buckaroos (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2013 Essay by Scott B. Bomar (guest post) * Original album Original label Buck Owens and His Buckaroos In the fall of 1965, Buck Owens was the biggest country star in the world. He was halfway through a string of sixteen consecutive #1 singles on the country chart in the industry-leading “Billboard” magazine, and had just been invited to appear at New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. Already designated a National Historic Landmark, the esteemed venue had hosted Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Bernstein, and Ellington. Owens recognized the honor of being asked, but instructed his manager, Jack McFadden, to decline the offer. “When they first started talking about it, it scared me to death,” he admitted in a 1967 radio interview with Bill Thompson. Buck was worried the Manhattan audience wouldn’t be interested in his music, and he wanted to avoid the embarrassment of unsold tickets. McFadden pushed him to reconsider. When Ken Nelson, Owens’ producer at Capitol Records, suggested they record the performance and release it as his first live album, Buck finally conceded. Buck Owens’ journey to the top of the charts and the top of the bill at the most revered concert hall in the United States began in Sherman, Texas, where he was born Alvis Edgar Owens, Junior in 1929. By 1937, the Owens family was headed for a new life in California, but they wound up settling in Mesa, Arizona, when a broken trailer hitch derailed their plan.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANALYSIS IN MUSIC: KATY PERRY A “DARK HORSE” CANDIDATE TO SPARK CHANGE? Edward M. Christian* ABSTRACT The music industry is at a crossroad. Initial copyright infringement judgments against artists like Katy Perry and Robin Thicke threaten millions of dollars in damages, with the songs at issue sharing only very basic musical similarities or sometimes no similarities at all other than the “feel” of the song. The Second Circuit’s “Lay Listener” test and the Ninth Circuit’s “Total Concept and Feel” test have emerged as the dominating analyses used to determine the similarity between songs, but each have their flaws. I present a new test—a test I call the “Holistic Sliding Scale” test—to better provide for commonsense solutions to these cases so that artists will more confidently be able to write songs stemming from their influences without fear of erroneous lawsuits, while simultaneously being able to ensure that their original works will be adequately protected from instances of true copying. * J.D. • Ringo Starr Actuarà Per Primera Vegada En Solitari a Barcelona Aquest Dimarts El Bateria De the Beatles Ho Farà En El Marc Del Guitar BCN 2018
