Newly Obtained Data on He Isotopes in Mantle Xenoliths in Basalts from the Vitim Plateau, Eastern Siberia, Russia RUSSIAN JOURNAL OF EARTH SCIENCES, VOL. 12, ES3003, doi:10.2205/2012ES000513, 2012 Newly obtained data on He isotopes in mantle xenoliths in basalts from the Vitim Plateau, Eastern Siberia, Russia A. F. Grachev1 Received 18 April 2012; accepted 20 April 2012; published 8 May 2012. The paper reports recently obtained data on the He isotopic composition of mantle xenoliths in basalts from the Vitim Plateau. Most of the samples, which were examined by the crushing technique, have atmosphere-normalized 3He/4He ratios indiscernible from those of the a source of the MORB type. The only exception is a single sample whose ratio is significantly higher than the value typical of MORB. The Sr-Nd systematics of all of the xenoliths and their host basalt are close to those of basalts at oceanic islands (OIB). The isotopic composition of the mantle xenoliths is proved to be formed by the mixing of two sources: mantle plume and MORB. The chemical composition of the xenoliths and their host basalt are presented in Table 1. Isotopic geochemical data on a representative collection of xenoliths from basalts from the Vitim Plateau were pub- lished in [Ashchepkov, 1991; Ionov et al. 2005]. As follows from Figure 2, the composition of the mantle beneath the Vitim Plateau is strongly heterogeneous, as is typical of the continental mantle as a whole [Grachev, 1989]. Although one of our xenoliths (sample 1069) has a composi- tion closer to the primitive mantle in terms of MgO{Al2O3 proportion (Figure 2), both of the xenolith samples and the host basalt define a compact field of data point in aSr{Nd diagram (Figure 3), with this field corresponding to a source Figure 1. This publication presents our newly obtained data on the He isotopic composition of mantle xenoliths in basalts from the Vitim Plateau that allowed us to conduct comparative analysis of earlier and recently obtained results. Brief Description of the Samples Helium isotopic systematics was studied in two samples. Sample 1069 was taken up in the Shlak-Gora opencast mine at a distance of 75 km from the Romanovka{Bagdarin road (Figure 1). In this quarry, cinder of a volcanic cone is mined. Since this mine could hardly be started to develop earlier than 300 years ago, the exposure time of the xenoliths could not be longer than this. The sample itself has an ellipsoidal shape close to 14 cm along its major axis and is enclosed into a tuff rind. It is important to mention that the samples analyzed by Staudacher and Allegre [1991] were taken in the same mine, and this allows us to compare the data of these researchers and ours. Sample 1065 was collected from a flow of black aphanitic basalt on the left-hand side of the Bol'shoi Amalat River, Figure 2. ERMIKOV United Institute of Geology, Geophysics, and Mineralogy, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy ofSciences, Novosibirsk-90, 630090, Russia Abstract This paper reviews and integrates new results on: (I) the Late Paleozoic and Mesozoic evolution of Central Asia; (2) Cenozoic mountain building and intramontane basin formation in the Altay-Sayan area; (3) comparison of the tectonic evolutionary paths of the Altay, Baikal, and Tien Shan regions; (4) Cenozoic tectonics and mantle-plume magmatic activity; and (5) the geodynamics and tectonic evolution of Central Asia as a function of the India-Himalaya collision. It provides a new and more complete scenario for the formation of the Central Asian intracontinental mountain belt, compared with the generally accepted model of the "indenta tion" of the Indian plate into the Eurasian plate. The new model is based on the hypothesis of a complex interaction of lithospheric plates and mantle-plume magmatism. Compilation and comparison of new and published structural, geomorphological, paleomagnetic, isotopic, fission-track, and plume magmatism data from the Baikal area, the Altay, Mongolia, Tien Shan, Pamir, and Tibet show that the main stages of their orogenic evolution and basin sedimentation are closely related in time and space.

Yakovlev, I.Yu. Kulakov, S.A. Tychkov Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, Siberian Branch of the RAS, 3 prosp. Koptyuga, Novosibirsk, 630090, Russia Received 11 September 2005, accepted 2 March 2006 Available online xx January 2007 Abstract We studied the 3D velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the Baikal region using tomographic inversion of ∼25,000 P and S arrivals from more than 1200 events recorded by 86 stations of three local seismological networks. Simultaneous iterative inversion with a new algorithm for source location yielded 3D images of P and S velocity anomalies in the crust and upper mantle, a 2D model of Moho depths, and corrections to source coordinates and origin times. The resolving power of the algorithm, its stability against variations in the starting model, and the reliability of the final results were checked in several tests. The 3D velocity structure shows a well-pronounced low-velocity zone in the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the southwestern flank of the Baikal rift which matches the area of Cenozoic volcanism and a high velocity zone beneath the Siberian craton. The Moho depth pattern fits the surface tectonic elements with thinner crust along Lake Baikal and under the Busiyngol and Tunka basins and thicker crust beneath the East Sayan and Transbaikalian mountains and under the Primorsky ridge on the southern craton border.

Taylor1 U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA Received 26 January 2001; revised 15 October 2001; accepted 25 October 2001; published 16 July 2002. [1] The Cenozoic rift system of Baikal, located in the interior of the largest continental mass on Earth, is thought to represent a potential analog of the early stage of breakup of supercontinents. We present a detailed P wave velocity structure of the crust and sediments beneath the Central Basin, the deepest basin in the Baikal rift system. The structure is characterized by a Moho depth of 39–42.5 km; an 8-km-thick, laterally continuous high-velocity (7.05–7.4 km/s) lower crust, normal upper mantle velocity (8 km/s), a sedimentary section reaching maximum depths of 9 km, and a gradual increase of sediment velocity with depth. We interpret the high-velocity lower crust to be part of the Siberian Platform that was not thinned or altered significantly during rifting. In comparison to published results from the Siberian Platform, Moho under the basin is elevated by <3 km. On the basis of these results we propose that the basin was formed by upper crustal extension, possibly reactivating structures in an ancient fold-and-thrust belt. The extent and location of upper mantle extension are not revealed by our data, and it may be offset from the rift. We believe that the Baikal rift structure is similar in many respects to the Mesozoic Atlantic rift system, the precursor to the formation of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Bereya picrite basalt-tuff lherzolite xenoliths represent starting period of mantle activity referred to the formation of lava plateau. The most common Gtf-lherzolites are very similar to Ga-Sp Iherzolites but less oxidized and more fertile Na, Ti, Al enriched (fig.l). Ga lherzolites features are subdivided to the several groups gradually reducing in grain size and changing in structure from coarse grained porphyric Iherzolites through mean grained foliated or deformed to fine- equal - grained varieties together with temperature decreasing from 1150°C to 950°C. The rims on the garnet changing from presumably Opx to Cpx and Sp in this sequence also demonstrate temperature decrease. The lower T° interval (750-900°C) is constructed by coarse grained slightly depleted lherzolites with Phi or Al-rich Px and Sp possibly representing lithospheric mantle. REE and geochemical features manifest the Cpx and Ga formation from moving melts. Gradual rise of Sm/Nd, Gd/Yb ratios, positive correlation of LREE and negative of HREE in lherzolite Cpx with estimated temperatures in Ga lherzolites reveals Ga control while low T° Sp lherzolites have no Ga influence.

In the Vitim Plateau, small Received 7 July 2015 volume high-Mg volcanics erupted at 16e14 Ma, and were followed with voluminous moderate-Mg lavas Received in revised form at 14e13 Ma. In the former unit, we have recorded a sequence of (1) initial basaltic melts, contaminated 10 May 2016 by crustal material, (2) uncontaminated high-Mg basanites and basalts of transitional (KeNaeK) com- Accepted 21 May 2016 positions, and (3) picrobasalts and basalts of K series; in the latter unit a sequence of (1) initial basalts Available online xxx and basaltic andesites of transitional (NaeKeNa) compositions and (2) basalts and trachybasalts of KeNa series. From pressure estimation, we infer that the high-Mg melts were derived from the sub- Keywords: Volcanism lithospheric mantle as deep as 150 km, unlike the moderate-Mg melts that were produced at the e Geodynamics shallow mantle. The 14 13 Ma rock sequence shows that initial melts equilibrated in a garnet-free Cenozoic mantle source with subsequently reduced degree of melting garnet-bearing material.

VNIIOkeangeologia, Abgliyski Ave. 1, 190121 St.Petersburg, Russia Garnet peridotites form the dominant rock type in cratonic mantle xenolith suites carried by kimberlites, but are very rare in non-cratonic xenolith suites hosted by alkali basaltic volcanics. This presumably indicates that the generation of alkali basaltic and basanitic host lavas of most non-cratonic spinel lherzolite xenolith suites is too shallow to sample garnet peridotites, and that exceptional tectonic circumstances are required to permit sampling in the garnet stability field. These rare garnet peridotite occurrences are important, as they manifest relatively fertile major element compositions, and appear to confirm the compositional difference between cratonic and non-cratonic mantle lithosphere recognised on the basis of the abundant spinel lherzolite samples. The examples of non-cratonic garnet peridotites which have been described to date appear to be either in a behind-arc setting in volcanics triggered by asthenospheric upwelling in response to subduction, such as those at Mingxi and Xilong in southeastern China (Cao and Zhu, 1987) and at Pali Aike in southern South America (Stem et al., 1989), or they occur in distal expressions of rift-related volcanism on the
