LARGE-SCALE MUSIC CLASSIFICATION USING AN APPROXIMATE k-NN CLASSIFIER Haukur Pálmason Master of Science Computer Science January 2011 School of Computer Science Reykjavík University M.Sc. RESEARCH THESIS ISSN 1670-8539 Large-Scale Music Classification using an Approximate k-NN Classifier by Haukur Pálmason Research thesis submitted to the School of Computer Science at Reykjavík University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science January 2011 Research Thesis Committee: Dr. Björn Þór Jónsson, Supervisor Associate Professor, Reykjavík University, Iceland Dr. Laurent Amsaleg Research Scientist, IRISA-CNRS, France Dr. Yngvi Björnsson Associate Professor, Reykjavík University, Iceland Copyright Haukur Pálmason January 2011 Large-Scale Music Classification using an Approximate k-NN Classifier Haukur Pálmason January 2011 Abstract Content based music classification typically uses low-level feature vectors of high-dimensionality to represent each song. Since most classification meth- ods used in the literature do not scale well, the number of such feature vec- tors is usually reduced in order to save computational time. Approximate k-NN classification, on the other hand, is very efficient and copes better with scale than other methods. It can therefore be applied to more feature vec- tors within a given time limit, potentially resulting in better quality. In this thesis, we first demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of approximate k-NN classification through a traditional genre classification task, achieving very respectable accuracy in a matter of minutes. We then apply the approx- imate k-NN classifier to a large-scale collection of more than thirty thousand songs. We show that, through an iterative process, the classification con- verges relatively quickly to a stable state.

It’s a staple of black history lessons, and it’s the name of Spike Lee’s film company. The promise was the first systematic attempt to provide a form of reparations to newly freed slaves, and it wasNo. astonishingly 18-4794, radical viewedfor its time, 3/04/2020 proto-socialist in its implications. In fact, such a policy would be radical in any country today: the federal government’s massive confiscation of private property — some 400,000 acres — formerly owned by Confederate land owners, and its methodical redistribution to former black slaves. What most of us haven’t heard is that the idea really was generated by black leaders themselves. It is difficult to stress adequately how revolutionary this idea was: As the historian Eric Foner puts it in his book, Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863- 1877, “Here in coastal South Carolina and Georgia, the prospect beckoned of a transformation of Southern society more radical even than the end of slavery.” Try

  • WATCHMOJO – the Life and Career of David Bowie (1947-2016)
WATCHMOJO – The life and career of David Bowie (1947-2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lan_wotkon0 [Fashion] Welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're taking a look at the life and career of David Bowie. [Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops.

  • GIRL with a CAMERA a Novel of Margaret Bourke-White
GIRL WITH A CAMERA A Novel of Margaret Bourke-White, Photographer Commented [CY1]: Add Photographer? By Carolyn Meyer Carolyn Meyer 100 Gold Avenue SW #602 Albuquerque, NM 87102 505-362-6201 [email protected] 2 GIRL WITH A CAMERA Sometime after midnight, a thump—loud and jarring. A torpedo slams into the side of our ship, flinging me out of my bunk. The ship is transporting thousands of troops and hundreds of nurses. It is December 1942, and our country is at war. I am Margaret Bourke-White, the only woman photographer covering this war. The U.S. Army Air Forces has handed me a plum assignment: photographing an Allied attack on the Germans. I wanted to fly in one of our B-17 bombers, but the top brass ordered me to travel instead in the flagship of a huge convoy, headed from England through the Straits of Gibraltar towards the coast of North Africa. It would be safer than flying, the officers argued. As it turns out, they were dead wrong. Beneath the surface of the Mediterranean, German submarines glide, silent and lethal, stalking their prey. One of their torpedoes has found its mark. I grab my camera bag and one camera, leaving everything else behind, and race to the bridge. I hear the order blare: Abandon ship! Abandon ship! There is not enough light and not enough time to take photographs. I head for Lifeboat No. 12 and board with the others assigned to it, mostly nurses. We’ve drilled for it over and over, but this is not a drill.
