Catalogue of Photographs of Performers at the Embassy Theatre
Catalogue of Photographs of Performers and Shows in the Archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation The archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation hold more than 3000 artifacts, including more than 600 photographs of vaudevillians inscribed to Bud Berger (long-time stage man- ager at the Embassy Theatre, known as the Emboyd until 1952); more than 300 posters, playbills, programs, stools, and even guitars signed by the stars and casts of shows that have played at the Embassy Theatre over the past forty years, rang- ing from classic and current Broadway shows to acrobatic groups, choral ensembles, dance shows, ballet, stand-up comedians, rock bands, country singers, travel films, silent films, theatre organists, and so on; and hundreds of publicity photographs of performers, shows, and events at the theatre, primarily from the period following the establishment of the Embassy Theatre Foundation and its rescue of the theatre from the wrecking ball in 1975; and a nearly complete run of the journal of the American Theatre Organ Society. The archive is now almost fully catalogued and preserved in archival housing. Earlier excerpts from the catalogue (available on the Archives page of the Embassy Theatre’s web site) cover the photographs inscribed to Bud Berger and the posters, playbills, programs, stools, and so on from later shows at the Embassy. This is the third excerpt, covering the public- ity photographs of the last forty-five years and a few photographs of earlier events, Bud Berger, and other members of the stage crew. The publicity photographs are primarily of individ- ual performers, but a few shows are presented as well, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, Annie, Barnum, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Cabaret, California Suite, Cats, A Christ- mas Carol, Dancin’, Evita, Gypsy, I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Peter Pan, Same Time Next Year, Side by Side by Sondheim, and Ziegfeld: A Night at the Follies. -
Frank Allen the Searchers
Chats to: Frank Allen The Searchers Please introduce yourself, and maybe for some of our younger audience especially, please can you tell us a brief history about The Searchers? I am Frank Allen, bass player and front man with The Searchers and a very long standing member, having celebrated on August 3 rd 49 years as one of the group. For the benefit of younger readers The Searchers came to national and international prominence in 1963 when the Beatles change the whole outlook on popular beat music across the globe at a time when in particular America was a closed shop to artistes from the U.K. The first record, Sweets For My Sweet , was released in June that year and started a run of fourteen chart hits which included Sugar & Spice , When You Walk In The Room , Needles & Pins , Love Potion Number Nine , Someday We’re Gonna Love Again, Goodbye My Love, Don’t Throw Your Love Away, He’s Got No Love , Take Me For What I’m Worth , Take It Or Leave It , Bumble Bee and Have You Ever Loved Somebody as well as a succession of albums and extended play discs that charted. Like the Beatles and many of the new bands at the time it was formed in Liverpool and I broke that chain when I replaced the original bass player, Tony Jackson in 1964. My first disc with The Searchers was When You Walk In The Room , our most covered hit ever, and I was to play on 9 of the chart singles. Originally the group was called ‘Johnny Sandon & The Searchers’. -

Historical Approaches to Merseybeat: Delivery, Affinity and Diversity
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Northumbria Research Link Historical approaches to Merseybeat: Delivery, Affinity And Diversity Ian Inglis University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK Introduction Even a cursory inspection of the literature about popular music reveals that perceptions of an association between music and place are frequent and unremarkable. Indeed, there are so many attempts to describe and define musical styles by containing them within a geographical category that it could be argued that the practice has become less a convention than a cliché. Recent analyses of specific sounds assumed to ‘belong’ to a region or city include Coventry (Frith 1988); Dunedin, Manchester (Shuker 1998); New Orleans, Chicago, Texas, Memphis, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Southern California, New York City (DeCurtis & Henke 1992); Detroit (Carson 1999; Boland & Bond 2002; True 2004); Nashville (Hemphill 1975; Streissguth 1997; Jensen 1998); Seattle (Morrell 1993); and Los Angeles (Hoskyns 1996). But does this routine exercise in labelling reflect the existence of authentic causal connections between a city’s social practices and its cultural products (in this case, its music)? Or is it merely a shorthand device for naming and marketing musical outputs that actually have very little in common other than their point of origin? In order to illuminate such a discussion, I want to concentrate on the specific example of the Mersey sound or, as it has been frequently labelled, ‘Merseybeat’. There are a number of reasons for choosing it. One is that it represented, in 1963, the first time in the history of British popular music when a sound and a city were bracketed together in this way. -

The levels on which Franklin sings this time are quickly established on the first track of each side. The recordings are so intimate as to be disconcerting at first, as if George were in the room talking directly to you about the guitars. But in Liverpool in those days, the only thing I could find resembling a Strat was a Futurama that had strings about a half an inch off the fingerboard. This book tells the story of those heady days in the 60s, of the competitors who tried and failed to match the sound, and of the instrument's continuing production by Rickenbacker and use by many modern guitarists. -
