Catalogue of Photographs of Performers and Shows in the Archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation The archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation hold more than 3000 artifacts, including more than 600 photographs of vaudevillians inscribed to Bud Berger (long-time stage man- ager at the Embassy Theatre, known as the Emboyd until 1952); more than 300 posters, playbills, programs, stools, and even guitars signed by the stars and casts of shows that have played at the Embassy Theatre over the past forty years, rang- ing from classic and current Broadway shows to acrobatic groups, choral ensembles, dance shows, ballet, stand-up comedians, rock bands, country singers, travel films, silent films, theatre organists, and so on; and hundreds of publicity photographs of performers, shows, and events at the theatre, primarily from the period following the establishment of the Embassy Theatre Foundation and its rescue of the theatre from the wrecking ball in 1975; and a nearly complete run of the journal of the American Theatre Organ Society. The archive is now almost fully catalogued and preserved in archival housing. Earlier excerpts from the catalogue (available on the Archives page of the Embassy Theatre’s web site) cover the photographs inscribed to Bud Berger and the posters, playbills, programs, stools, and so on from later shows at the Embassy. This is the third excerpt, covering the public- ity photographs of the last forty-five years and a few photographs of earlier events, Bud Berger, and other members of the stage crew. The publicity photographs are primarily of individ- ual performers, but a few shows are presented as well, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, Annie, Barnum, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Cabaret, California Suite, Cats, A Christ- mas Carol, Dancin’, Evita, Gypsy, I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Peter Pan, Same Time Next Year, Side by Side by Sondheim, and Ziegfeld: A Night at the Follies.

  • Frank Allen the Searchers
Chats to: Frank Allen The Searchers Please introduce yourself, and maybe for some of our younger audience especially, please can you tell us a brief history about The Searchers? I am Frank Allen, bass player and front man with The Searchers and a very long standing member, having celebrated on August 3 rd 49 years as one of the group. For the benefit of younger readers The Searchers came to national and international prominence in 1963 when the Beatles change the whole outlook on popular beat music across the globe at a time when in particular America was a closed shop to artistes from the U.K. The first record, Sweets For My Sweet , was released in June that year and started a run of fourteen chart hits which included Sugar & Spice , When You Walk In The Room , Needles & Pins , Love Potion Number Nine , Someday We’re Gonna Love Again, Goodbye My Love, Don’t Throw Your Love Away, He’s Got No Love , Take Me For What I’m Worth , Take It Or Leave It , Bumble Bee and Have You Ever Loved Somebody as well as a succession of albums and extended play discs that charted. Like the Beatles and many of the new bands at the time it was formed in Liverpool and I broke that chain when I replaced the original bass player, Tony Jackson in 1964. My first disc with The Searchers was When You Walk In The Room , our most covered hit ever, and I was to play on 9 of the chart singles. Originally the group was called ‘Johnny Sandon & The Searchers’.

  • 46 Years Late but I Made It
46 years late but I made it Back in 1961 a damp cellar, converted into a club, in Liverpool was becoming a Mecca for young teenagers. However it wasn’t until a rather suave, certainly for Liverpool, gentleman descended down the winding stairs on November 9 th 1961 that it’s status in the annals of popular music were about to change. That man was Brian Epstein and he had been drawn to the club out of I am sure part business acumen and part curiosity, to see for himself a rather scruffy group who he had heard of through the fact that requests for records of theirs had been made at his music and record shop, even though technically they had not made any in their own right. The group was of course The Beatles and within 18 months this club would go on to achieve legendary status. Many groups who swept to fame on the crest of what became known as the Merseybeat boom did of course play at the Cavern and The Searchers were no exception, making their Cavern debut fronted by Johnny Sandon on April 5th 1961 or 18 th April dependant on one’s source of reference. Pop historians would later claim that The Searchers were really better known for playing another venue called the Iron Door club. However fact remains The Searchers did play at the Cavern numerous times on three occasions with The Beatles and that perhaps the most fateful gig they played there was one night when the aforementioned Brian Epstein, decided to take a look at their performance with a view to perhaps adding them to his growing roster of Liverpool groups and singers, after all, why not, they were perceived to be one of the big groups within the Liverpool scene.
