Celebrate World Book Night at The Annual James Kirkup Memorial Poetry Competition at South Shields Central Library. Red Squirrel Press will be launching a pamphlet by last year’s winning poet William Bonar This year’s prize winner will be announced and will read their prize winning poem. Refreshments provided by the Kirkup Collection. World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books, which sees passionate volunteers gift books in their communities to share their love of reading. South Tyneside Remembers. South Shields Central Library. South Tyneside Remembers is one of several activities being held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of John Simpson Kirkpatrick, the Man With the Donkey, at Gallipoli on 19th May 1915. It will include various stalls, talks, displays and other activities. The organisations who have so far confirmed that they are attending are the North East War Memorials Project, the Tynemouth World War 1 Commemoration Project, The Time Bandits, Beyond the Western Front, the Jarrow and Hebburn Local History Society, the Hebburn Family History Group, the South Shields Local History Group, Tyne and Wear Museums and Archives, Beamish and Newcastle University. Mr Peter Hoy is also confirmed as a speaker. His talk will be "The Royal Naval Division at Gallipoli". These sessions provide a basic introduction with helpful tips on how to conduct your own research. For more information call 0191 424 6194. We also run bookable sessions at South Shields Central Library every Friday between 10am and 4pm. These sessions provide in depth and guided support and help to trace family trees. 2 A maximum of six 1 hour sessions can be booked. Healthy Cookery Demonstrations are held every Tuesday at 12.15pm, Volunteer With Us - Volunteers are central in running the People’s Café. The People’s Café is run by Tyneside Mind in partnership with South Tyneside Libraries. All profits made from the café go back to support Tyneside Mind.
