Singer figured his adoption of a vegetarian diet in 1962 as a kind of conversion, pronouncing it a “religion” that was central to his being. Here I outline Singer’s vegetarian philosophy, and argue that it was the underlying ethical precept in the fiction written after the conversion. I demonstrate the way in which that ethic informs the presentation of both Judaism and women in Singer’s later writings. -

THE MAGICIAN OF LUBLIN by Isaac Bashevis Singer AUTHOR’S BIO Isaac Bashevis Singer immigrated to the United States in 1935, which was the year of his first novel Satan in Goray. Since then, he wrote in Yiddish more or less exclusively about the Jewish world of pre-war Poland, or more exactly, about the Hasidic world of pre-war Poland, into which he was born, the son of a rabbi, in 1904. Singer published his autobiography in four volumes: In My Father’s Court (1966), A Little Boy in Search of God (1976), A Young Man in Search of Love (1978), and Lost in America (1981). His best-known novels include The Magician of Lublin (1960), The Slave (1962), Enemies, a Love Story (1972), and Shosha (1978). In 1978, Singer received the Nobel Prize in Literature. The citation praised him for his art in narrative and noted that although the background of his works was the Polish-Jewish tradition, they revealed the human condition, which transcends cultural barriers. In his acceptance speech, Singer commented on the values that he had learned from the humble people whom he had known in childhood, who spoke in a vanishing tongue, the language of a people in exile. After a series of strokes, Singer died in Surfside, Florida, on July 24, 1991. ABOUT THE BOOK The Magician of Lublin Written in 1958, serialized in 1959, and published in English in 1960, The Magician of Lublin also deals with human passions, but it is not overcast with the gloom of past events. It reflects an expansiveness often missing in Singer’s works. -

A SPACE FOR CONNECTION: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INQUIRY ON MUSIC LISTENING AS LEISURE by JOSEPH ALFRED PATE IV (Under the Direction of Corey W. Johnson) ABSTRACT This polyvocal text leveraged Post-Intentional Phenomenology (Vagle, 2010) to trouble, open up, and complexify understanding of the lived leisure experience (Parry & Johnson, 2006) of connection with and through music listening. Music listening was foregrounded as one horizon within the aural soundscape that affords deeply meaningful and significant experiences for many. Past scholarship within the Leisure Studies literature has primarily attended to the impact and relevancy of music in the lives of adolescents. This study focused on engagement with music of five adults, accessing phenomenology as both a philosophical and methodological lens to look along (Lewis, 1990) this lived-experience. Using multiple voices and styles of representation, this polyvocal work challenged traditional ways of knowing by inviting listening, music, and voice to serve as additional data embedded throughout its discursive representation. Accessing Bachelard‟s (1990) phenomenology of the resonation-reverberation doublet revealed five partial, fleeting, and tentative manifestations (Vagle, 2010) of this lived leisure experience, which included: Getting Lost: Felt Resonation and Embodiment; I‟m Open: Openness, Receptivity, and Enchantment; Serendipitous Moments; The Found Mirror: Oh There You Are; and Cairns and Echoes: The Lustering Potency of Song. Ultimately, music appeared to speak to so as to speak for participants, providing musical affirmation and sustenance throughout their lives. Acting Jewish: Negotiating Ethnicity on the American Stage and Screen Henry Bial http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=147187 The University of Michigan Press chapter 4 How Jews Became Sexy, 1968–1983 “What’s a nice Jewish girl like me doing on the cover of Playboy?” This caption appears, self-referentially enough, on the cover of Playboy’s October 1977 issue,1 which features a photograph of Barbra Streisand, wearing white shorts and a T-shirt emblazoned with the Playboy logo, reclining across the bottom half of a large white circle; Streisand’s extended left leg forms a line that transforms the circle into a Q, which presumably refers to the questions she will answer in what the leading headline bills as: “THE FIRST IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW WITH BARBRA STREISAND.” The caption (“What’s a nice Jewish girl . .”) appears suspended above and to the right of Streisand’s head, evoking a cartoon-style thought bubble. The location of the caption and the use of the ‹rst person (“like me”) suggests that this is a question that Streisand is asking herself. Yet perhaps there is a more interesting ques- tion: why has Playboy, the self-appointed arbiter of feminine sexual attractiveness, chosen to feature “a nice Jewish girl” on its cover? How did Streisand become, in fact, “the ‹rst female celebrity in 24 years” to pose for the magazine’s cover?2 In March of 1962, ‹fteen years prior to her Playboy appearance, Streisand made her Broadway debut as Miss Marmelstein in Jerome Weidman and Harold Rome’s I Can Get It for You Wholesale. -

In “authentic Judaism,” kosher sex between husband and wife is a sacred endeavor and a key to heavenly bliss both on earth and beyond. This representation of Jewish attitudes about sex is highly problematic and is often based on only one medieval Jewish source commonly known as The Holy Letter. This paper discusses the use of this text in two Hollywood films: Yentl (1983), and A Stranger Among Us (1992). What Yentl Reveals About Orthodox Judaism's
Allison Hufford Professor Greenblatt 08/26/2019 The Question of Queerness: What Yentl Reveals about Orthodox Judaism’s Relationship to Gender Identity and Sexuality Orthodox Judaism is one of the most traditional branches of modern Judaism, and has historically been the slowest to break from conventional gender roles. Barbra Streisand’s movie Yentl, and Issac Singer’s short story “Yentl the Yestiva Boy” which it is based on, explore Orthodox Judaism’s relationship to queerness through the story of a Jewish woman, Yentl, who disguises herself as a man, Anshel, in order to study Torah. Whereas the short story can easily be read as a transgender narrative, the movie erases much of this gender-queerness by taking on more of a feminist approach. Both interpretations, however, represent, explore, and then ultimately abandon queerness as incompatible with Orthodox Jewish identity. Nevertheless, it is through this exploration of gender and sexual fluidity that the story of Yentl reveals the queerness inherent in Jewish culture, suggesting that each is not so disparate from the other as they may seem. Although the phrases ‘transgender,’ ‘non-binary,’ or even ‘queer’ are never explicitly written in the text, “Yentl the Yeshiva Boy” has been interpreted by many not as the story of a cross-dressing woman but as a trans-man inside a female body. This interpretation is not altogether unsupported, beginning with Yentl’s father telling his daughter that she has “the soul of a man” and that her female body is a “mistake” (Singer 8). Before she becomes Anshel, Yentl also frequently cross-dresses in front of a mirror—something that has no obvious purpose other than the presumed pleasure it provides her with. -

Online International Interdisciplinary Research Journal, {Bi-Monthly}, ISSN 2249-9598, Volume-09, Mar 2019 Special Issue (04) The Holocaust Survivors in Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Shosha R.G.Rathika Assistant Professor of English,Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore India Abstract In the novel taken for study, the characters doubt the existence of God and go in for worldly wisdom. They suffer and also make people around them suffer due to their worldly ways. Only at the end, they realize that without faith in God and His ways, they will perish. They return to God knowing that they will be safe only when they are in the hands of God. KEYWORDS-Holocaust, Jewishness, Polish Jews, Alter ego, Spiritual Autobiography Shosha, is a novel of remembrance. It invokes the past by different means and for different ends. Building a montage of eyewitness accounts, Singer emphasizes the shared horror of experiences that have permanently traumatized his major characters. So crucial is remembrance in shaping the novel’s texture that action and motivation are virtually indecipherable without reference to the past. In Shosha, however, the past is merely a backdrop for the personal reminiscences that Singer treats elsewhere as straightforward autobiography. Although it was published in English before The Penitent, Shosha is Singer’s latest novel in point of composition. Serialized in Yiddish in the Forward in 1974 as Soul Expeditions, Shosha was published in English in 1978, nearly simultaneously with A Young Man in Search of Love, a volume of memoirs. Shosha’s first-person narration and its slavish fidelity to actual events are unique among Singer’s translated novels, and highlight his growing tendency to rely upon his life for his fiction. -

“WHY THE GEESE SHRIEKED” ISAAC BASHEVIS SINGER’S WORK BETWEEN MYSTICISM AND SCEPTICISM Khayke Beruriah Wiegand ABSTRACT: In a chapter of his memoirs, the acclaimed Yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer grants his readers some insight into the life of his father’s rabbinic household in Warsaw – a household full of contrasts and tensions between his parents’ conflicting personalities, between Hasidic and Mitnagdic tendencies and between mysticism and scepticism. Both his father’s mysticism and his mother’s scepticism were formative influences on Bashevis, and his writing constantly vacillates between these two world-views. Bashevis is well-known for his short stories about demons, dybbuks and other supernatural phenomena, but it is interesting to note that at times his demons clearly seem to be external manifestations of internal, psychological states of being, whereas at other times no rational explanation for an apparent supernatural phenomenon can be found. Bashevis’s narrators and protagonists constantly question God and express their scepticism about traditional Jewish beliefs, while, on the other hand, they are deeply influenced by Jewish mystical ideas. The conflict between rationalism and mysticism, between modern philosophy and Jewish religious beliefs, especially Kabbalistic ideas, never gets resolved in Bashevis’s works, but this continuous tension is exactly what makes Bashevis such a great writer! Práce ukazuje, jak imigranti prožívají proces přechodu od původní kultury k americké (process of whiteness) a tzv. americký sen jako novodobý mýtus, dále podmínky pro adaptaci a asimilaci židovských hrdinů a hrdinek v jazykové a náboženské oblasti, v manželství, ve zvycích i v jiných projevech starého židoevropského světa ve srovnání s americkou kulturou. -
