Book Review Animal Rights Richard A. Posner' Rattling the Cage: Toward Legal Rightsfor Animals. By Steven M. Wise. Cambridge,Mass.: PerseusBooks, 2000. Pp. 362. $25.00. The "animal rights" movement is gathering steam, and Steven Wise is one of the pistons. A lawyer whose practice is the protection of animals, he has now written a book in which he urges courts in the exercise of their common-law powers of legal rulemaking to confer legally enforceable rights on animals, beginning with chimpanzees and bonobos (the two most intelligent primate species).' Although Wise is well-informed about his subject-the biological as well as legal aspects-this is not an intellectually exciting book. I do not say this in criticism. Remember who Wise is: a practicing lawyer who wants to persuade the legal profession that courts should do much more to protect animals. Judicial innovation proceeds incrementally; as Holmes put it, the courts, in their legislative capacity, "are confined from molar to molecular motions."2 Wise's practitioner's perspective is, as we shall see, both the strength and the weakness of the book. f Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; Senior Lecturer, University of Chicago Law School. THE MAGICIAN OF LUBLIN by Isaac Bashevis Singer AUTHOR’S BIO Isaac Bashevis Singer immigrated to the United States in 1935, which was the year of his first novel Satan in Goray. Since then, he wrote in Yiddish more or less exclusively about the Jewish world of pre-war Poland, or more exactly, about the Hasidic world of pre-war Poland, into which he was born, the son of a rabbi, in 1904. Singer published his autobiography in four volumes: In My Father’s Court (1966), A Little Boy in Search of God (1976), A Young Man in Search of Love (1978), and Lost in America (1981). His best-known novels include The Magician of Lublin (1960), The Slave (1962), Enemies, a Love Story (1972), and Shosha (1978). In 1978, Singer received the Nobel Prize in Literature. The citation praised him for his art in narrative and noted that although the background of his works was the Polish-Jewish tradition, they revealed the human condition, which transcends cultural barriers. In his acceptance speech, Singer commented on the values that he had learned from the humble people whom he had known in childhood, who spoke in a vanishing tongue, the language of a people in exile. After a series of strokes, Singer died in Surfside, Florida, on July 24, 1991. ABOUT THE BOOK The Magician of Lublin Written in 1958, serialized in 1959, and published in English in 1960, The Magician of Lublin also deals with human passions, but it is not overcast with the gloom of past events. It reflects an expansiveness often missing in Singer’s works. -

Sue Coe is a British-American artist and activist working across drawing, printmaking, and painting. Coe studied at the Royal College of Art in London and emigrated to the US in the early 1970s, where she lived in New York City until upstate New York in 2002. Coe is known for her striking, propaganda-like visual commentary on major events and figures in culture and politics, rendered in stark visual contrast through her highly recognizable palette of black, white, and red. Coe’s experience growing up in close proximity to a slaughterhouse informed her lifelong animal rights activism, which remains interconnected within both her wider political activism and her output as an artist. In the decades since, Coe’s work has focused on factory farming, sweat shops, reproductive rights, housing, the prison system, war, the AIDS crisis, and the South African apartheid, often through depictions of key events and dates as marked by their presence in mass media. As well as being presented in museum and gallery exhibitions internationally, Coe’s graphic work has also been regularly published in periodicals like The New York Times, The New Yorker, Time Magazine, Newsweek, and others, delivering her powerful commentary on as a broad a basis as possible. -

Emphasis is given to two related outcomes, both of which set the Russian Empire apart from many of its western neighbours: the countryʼs refusal – despite long negotiations – to sign a landmark international treaty on cross-border bird protection (the 1902 Paris Convention) and the fact that the Empire did not pass any significant domestic legislation dedicated to wild bird protection. In the first paper I situate Singer’s work within the larger historical context of moral concern for animals, looking at previous public consensus on the issue, its breakdown and its re-emergence with Singer in the 1970s. In the second paper, I take a closer look at Singer’s highly influential book, Animal Liberation (1975), and argue that as activist literature, his chapter on animal experimentation for example can be seen as morally persuasive in ways other than simply as an example of (the consequences) of speciesism. How I do this is to place Singer’s work side by side that of 19th century activist Francis Power Cobbe’s, in particular her pamphlet Light in Dark Places (1883), and examine their work against the criticisms from scientists defending the practice of animal experimentation. THE LITERARY REPRESENTATION OF PRO-ANIMAL THOUGHT: READINGS IN CONTEMPORARY FICTION Robert Ralston McKay Department of English Literature Submitted for the degree of PhD The University of Sheffield, May 2003 THESIS ABSTRACT This thesis analyses the representation of pro-animal thought in literary fiction published over the last thirty years. Recently, critics have begun eclectically to trace animal rights arguments in past literature, attaching criticism to politics in a familiar way (considering the recent history of the literary academy). However, they have neither explained the holistic picture of human-animal relations in individual texts, nor how such questions relate to a specific literary context. This thesis, on the other hand, involves more a pinpointing of the particular value of literary works for extending the horizon of current ethical debates about animals than a partisan mobilisation of literary criticism in the service of animal rights. To that end, each chapter offers a thoroughgoing reading of an important text in the story of contemporary fiction's ethical encounter with the animal. I contextualise these extended readings with more succinct discussion of the wide range of contemporary authors who represent pro animal thought. This approach requires several theoretical methodologies, though all are within the realm of feminist post-structuralism. Butler's work on the discursive production of sex illuminates the ethical representation of species in Atwood's Surfacing. The representation of animals (both literary and political) in Walker's The Temple of My Familiar is explained by situating the animal within feminist debates about the relation of literary writing to the discursive formation of race. -

Huffington Post, February 29, 2012 “André Ford, an architecture student from the U.K., wants to bring new meaning to the phrase ‘like a chicken with its head cut off.’” “He proposed his ‘Headless Chicken Solution’ for a project at the Royal College of Art in which he was asked to look for sustainable solutions to the U.K.’s farming inefficiencies.” Various researchers and animal welfarists equate removing brain, sensation, and body parts of farmed animals with the removal or reduction of “suffering.” The primary “beneficiaries” of these “welfare” experiments and bodily excisions are chickens. Online International Interdisciplinary Research Journal, {Bi-Monthly}, ISSN 2249-9598, Volume-09, Mar 2019 Special Issue (04) The Holocaust Survivors in Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Shosha R.G.Rathika Assistant Professor of English,Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore India Abstract In the novel taken for study, the characters doubt the existence of God and go in for worldly wisdom. They suffer and also make people around them suffer due to their worldly ways. Only at the end, they realize that without faith in God and His ways, they will perish. They return to God knowing that they will be safe only when they are in the hands of God. KEYWORDS-Holocaust, Jewishness, Polish Jews, Alter ego, Spiritual Autobiography Shosha, is a novel of remembrance. It invokes the past by different means and for different ends. Building a montage of eyewitness accounts, Singer emphasizes the shared horror of experiences that have permanently traumatized his major characters. So crucial is remembrance in shaping the novel’s texture that action and motivation are virtually indecipherable without reference to the past. In Shosha, however, the past is merely a backdrop for the personal reminiscences that Singer treats elsewhere as straightforward autobiography. Although it was published in English before The Penitent, Shosha is Singer’s latest novel in point of composition. Serialized in Yiddish in the Forward in 1974 as Soul Expeditions, Shosha was published in English in 1978, nearly simultaneously with A Young Man in Search of Love, a volume of memoirs. Shosha’s first-person narration and its slavish fidelity to actual events are unique among Singer’s translated novels, and highlight his growing tendency to rely upon his life for his fiction.
