The AASHTO method…………………….…...……………………...157 Conclusions Reference Preface First of all, I would like to thank Professor Paola Di Mascio for suggesting me the topic of this thesis and for guiding me in writing it. This work treats stone pavements that are representative of many of roads in the historical downtown of Italian cities. The focus of the study is on current techniques used for pavements considering also what has been used in the past, particularly during the Roman period. A summary description of function of the pavement along with a list of the main types is presented; afterwards a description of stone pavements used during Roman times have been carried out, reporting some details on the main roads. After some sketches of lithology, various types of pavements (cobblestones, tile stone, flag stone) are described in detailed with a brief description of sidewalks; this part represents the core of the work. Various type of road drainage systems is presented before treating in detail stone materials and their mechanical properties (i.e. compressive strength, hardness, mass density). Finally, a project example has been considered; the design methods which have been focused on in this work, are empirical (Design guidance for lightly trafficked roads from I.D. Cook and J. Knapton and the AASHTO method). Fig. 1.1. Generic road 1. Later we will discuss the various types: flexible, rigid and semi-rigid. 1.1. Definition The road pavement is the structure that separates the tires of the vehicles from the subgrade, which is the upper layer of the soil in the embankment or in the trench that makes up the road. It can be also the concrete or a steel bridge deck, or still the tunnel invert. A pavement is formed by a succession of layers consisting of materials of different physical and mechanical characteristics, chosen according to the function that fulfill these layers within the structure and depending on the prevailing type of stress to which they are subject by traffic loads. Such a composition is derived from economic considerations: each layer is constituted by the most suitable material to respond to the stresses induced by traffic, that decreases from the top downwards. The reduction of the stresses with the depth depends on the stiffness and thickness of each layer. In general the pavements perform three different tasks: • to reduce tensions transmitted to the subgrade at a level compatible with its load-bearing capacity so that the soil does not undergo excessive deformation; 2 • to form a stable, durable and little deformable structure able to withstand the repeated loads applied by vehicles and such as to ensure an adequate driving comfort; • to ensure the safety of traffic in relation to the skid resistance in the presence of contaminants (water, mud, snow, ice, rubber deposits). 1.2. Types of pavements Upon variation of the materials used and of the order with which they are arranged in structure, we can distinguish the following types of pavements: 1.2.1. Flexible pavements It mainly consists of the following layers: • surface course in bituminous concrete consisting of two layers: the wearing course and the binder; • base course made of asphalt concrete, or of crushed stone , crushed slag, or other untreated or stabilized materials; • subbase in granular materials or recycled materials; • subgrade 3 Fig. 1.3. Semi-rigid pavements Constituted by a succession of layers similar to that of the flexible pavements, but the base layer is bonded with cement (cemented aggregate). Fig. 1.4. Scheme of a semi-rigid pavement 4 1.2.3. Rigid pavements A rigid pavement is constructed from cement concrete or reinforced concrete slabs. Grouted concrete roads are in the category of semi-rigid pavements. The design of rigid pavement is based on providing a structural cement concrete slab of sufficient strength to resists the loads from traffic. The rigid pavement has rigidity and high modulus of elasticity to distribute the load over a relatively wide area of soil. Fig. 1.5. Scheme of a rigid pavement 1.2.4. Modular pavements Constituted by natural or artificial stone elements (brick, concrete, etc.) resting on a bed of sand or cement mortar, a base layer and a subbase. This work deals with the modular pavements and in particular with natural stone pavements. 6 2. ROMAN ROADS Fig. 2.1. According to the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI, 2009), the average American driver lost 36 hours in 2007 sitting in congestion, wasting an average of 24 gallons of fuel. The average losses per driver in cities where the population exceeded one million were 25% higher. These costs were quantified into a national productivity loss of $87.2 billion, a four-fold increase (in 2007 dollars) from 1982. This figure does not take into account local air quality degradation due to the burning of the wasted fuel; though that externality is partly mitigated by the recent push towards electric and hybrid vehicles and the ongoing increases in fuel efficiency standards (Halsey, 2010).

    Cobblestone Buildings: Their Nature in General As Rich and Sue Freeman say so well in the introduction to their book Cobblestone Quest, Upstate NY residents drive by cobblestone houses and usually give them very little thought. Most people barely recognize that this area was the pre-Civil War birthplace of a new form of construction. It’s a method that remains peculiar to our region with over 90% of the cobblestone buildings in the entire United States being located within a 65-mile radius of Rochester, New York. Estimates vary, but approximately 700 to 1,200 cobblestone buildings were built in the United States. Between 600 and 900 of them are in New York State, spread over 25 counties, spanning from the Hudson River to Niagara Falls.1 Using an Ice Age residue of glacially-rounded native stones, pioneer craftsmen in the middle third of the nineteenth century perfected a form of folk art that was without precedent in America.2 This cobblestone craft that developed in this greater Rochester area flourished, spread and died out within less than half a century. Nevertheless, it left its stamp permanently on this region. According to Rich and Sue Freeman, who wrote the book Cobblestone Quest in 2005, it holds a place in history as the last generation of completely hand-built houses.3 While this article is dealing with cobblestone buildings as a construction method—not an architectural style—it can be said that most cobblestone buildings are Greek Revival in style. Those constructed before 1835 were, however, usually in the Federal style.

The Romans, looking only to durability, used heavy granite or basalt blocks, and many such pavements, constructed two thousand years ago, are still in good condition, though they are not what is wanted now. Durability may, to a certain extent, be sacrificed for more desirable qualities. It was a great mistake to lay the Russ pavement in Broadway; it is nothing but an imitation of the ancient Roman streets, and heavy, uninterrupted travel makes such pavements so smooth that it is cruelty to drive a horse over them. Where the travel is not so heavy, as is the case in the streets of Rome, the atmospheric influences prevent this polishing of the surface, and the pavement is not so objectionable. The common cobble-stone pavement, when the stones are not too large, gives a better foot-hold to the horses, and is, when well laid, very durable for light travel; but as the stones all lie with the most pointed part downward, they have a tendency to sink under heavy pressure; and the points being unequal in length and differing in degree of tapering, they will sink unequally.

The choice of the surface material depends on a range of rational and irrational arguments. In former days the availability of the materials was a dominant factor. Nowadays a broad scale of materials is available and functional requirements play an important role in the decision for a certain pavement type and surface layer now. The materials available are: • Bituminous bound materials (asphalt concrete, mastic asphalt) • Cement bound materials (concrete, concrete elements) • (Small) paving elements (block pavers, modular materials, stone, terracotta) • Composite pavements (a combination of the above mentioned ones) In urban areas there is a wide variety of pavement users, as there are: pedestrians, wheelchair- users, parents with prams, roller-skates, bicyclists, scoot-mobiles, motorists, passenger cars and trucks. The choice of the surface material depends on the (functional) requirements. Some of these requirements are the same as for highways; other ones might depend on the local situation. Additional requirements for urban areas might be a certain surface texture or colour for a certain image, easy to repair to guarantee the accessibility of houses, shops and other buildings, noise reducing, open for water infiltration, smooth to avoid vibrations and easy to open for accessing sewerage, gas and water systems. There might also be a need for flexible materials for creating ramps, roundabouts, cables and wiring.

Page ii A Message from the Administrator Dear Colleague: One of the greatest challenges the highway community faces is providing safe, efficient transportation service that conserves, and even enhances the environmental, scenic, historic, and community resources that are so vital to our way of life. This guide will help you meet that challenge. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has been pleased to work with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and other interested groups, including the Bicycle Federation of America, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Scenic America, to develop this publication. It identifies and explains the opportunities, flexibilities, and constraints facing designers and design teams responsible for the development of transportation facilities. This guide does not attempt to create new standards. Rather, the guide builds on the flexibility in current laws and regulations to explore opportunities to use flexible design as a tool to help sustain important community interests without compromising safety. To do so, this guide stresses the need to identify and discuss those flexibilities and to continue breaking down barriers that sometimes make it difficult for highway designers to be aware of local concerns of interested organizations and citizens. The partnership formed to develop this guidance grew out of the design-related provisions of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 and the National Highway System Designation Act of 1995. Congress provided dramatic new flexibilities in funding, stressed the importance of preserving historic and scenic values, and provided for enhancing communities through transportation improvements.

    Pearl District Access and Circulation Plan Existing Conditions Report Introduction This report reviews existing conditions related to land use and transportation in the study area. The Pearl District is located within the larger River District Urban Renewal Area, and is bordered by NW Broadway Avenue to the east, Interstate 405 to the west, W Burnside to the south, and the Willamette River to the north (Map 1). Below is a brief summary of existing conditions. For more detailed discussion of the transportation issues in the area, additional information, data, and maps are provided following the summary. Summary The Pearl District has street system and urban form characteristics that are similar to the Downtown and Old Town/Chinatown neighborhoods, with generally the same 200‐foot by 200‐foot block grid, and dense, mixed commercial/residential development. However, unlike its neighbors, much of the Pearl has been almost entirely rebuilt over the last 15 years with a predominance of residential construction. Fueled by infrastructure investments and a set of policies and development agreements following the River District Urban Renewal Area’s creation in 1998, the District has experienced rapid residential and commercial growth. The urban neighborhood built through these efforts has become a national model for inner city redevelopment. The District has many of the transportation characteristics of healthy, mature, 24‐hour mixed use areas, including high pedestrian and transit use, low reliance on the automobile compared to suburban areas, and a mix of residential, office, institutional and retail uses. As a result, Pearl residents, employers and visitors travel half as much by car as the regional average, and have much lower carbon emissions per capita from transportation sources.
