William Wilberforce: Triumph Over Britain’s Slave Trade Abigail Rahn Senior Division Historical Paper Words: 2499 Rahn 1 History has shown that the road to societal change is often paved with hardship and sorrow. The fight to end the British slave trade was a poignant example of the struggles to reach that change. The British slave trade thrived for over two centuries and was responsible for transporting 3.4 million slaves, mainly to Spanish, Portuguese, and British colonies.1 This horrific institution was permeated with misery, corruption, and cruelty. The conditions on the ships were abhorrent. The male captives were shackled together below deck, unable to move, and forced to lie in their own filth.2 The women were allowed some mobility and stayed on deck but were exposed to sexual harassment.3 Yet the appalling trade was “as accepted as birth and marriage and death.”4 It was not until William Wilberforce decided to combat slavery within Parliament that slaves had true hope of freedom. William Wilberforce’s campaign against the British slave trade, beginning in 1789, was a seemingly-endless battle against the trade’s relentless supporters. His faith propelled him through many personal tragedies for nearly two decades before he finally triumphed over the horrific trade. Because of Wilberforce’s faith-fueled determination, the slave trade was eradicated in the most powerful empire in the world. After the trade was abolished, Wilberforce fought for emancipation of all slaves in the British empire. He died just days after the House of Commons passed the act to free all slaves, an act that owed its existence to Wilberforce’s relentless fight against the slave trade.5 1Clarkson, Thomas. -

INTRODUCTORY. n preparing this short story of penny postage at a time when popular interest in the subject is aroused by the inauguration of penny postage between Great Britain and the United States, the writer has given his chief attention to the more obscure phases of the develop ment of the idea of penny postage. Rowland Hill and his great struggle to impress both the Post Office and the Treasury officials with the main arguments in favour of Uniform Penny Postage are matters which are dealt with in our histories. But of his namesake, John Hill, who tried hard to induce the Council of State to look favourably upon a similar plan nearly two hundred years earlier, nothing is known. The name of William Dockwra is known only to students of postal history and to philatelists. Yet he established and conducted what was in many senses a better system of local postage in London in 1680, at the rate of one penny per letter, than was in existence in 1840. After Rowland Hill came one Elihu Burritt, “ the learned blacksmith,” whose memory is cherished in the United States, and who, long before his own country had adopted Uniform Penny Postage, urged Great Britain to give the world what he termed “ Ocean Penny Postage,” which was different to, yet anticipatory of, Imperial Penny Postage and Universal Penny Postage, which became the questions of later years. -
Elihu Burritt and Friends
Elihu Burritt and Friends HE Library at Friends House has received during the past year or two gifts of letters written by Elihu T Burritt to Friends whilst he was engaged upon his Peace and Brotherhood mission in England during the middle years of last century. The donors of these very welcome additions to the Library have been James Edmund Clark of Street, Harriet Alexander of Worthing and Charlotte Lyndon of Hindhead. The last named had received from her mother, Anna Mary Ransom (nee Southall) of Hitchin, over eighty letters written to A. M. Southall by Elihu Burritt during the years 1850-56. It was my happy privilege to suggest to Charlotte Lyndon that this valuable collection of letters should find a permanent home at Friends House. We learn from these Burritt-Southall letters that it was due to Joseph Crosfield of Manchester that Burritt first came to England in 1848. He found an open door among Friends everywhere. His unassuming manner and persuasive methods of propaganda appealed to the quiet orderly life of Friends. He adopted two principal ways of working. One through the establishment of Olive Leaf Circles among women and, secondly, through a journal which he edited entitled The Bond of Brotherhood,. He also gained a con siderable following among liberal-minded business men by his advocacy of what he called " Ocean Penny Postage ". Blessed with brains, charm, influence and initiative, much wealth and fair health (though slightly crippled and with chronic digestive difficulties), he put evangelicalism on Britain’s map as a power for social change, first by overthrowing the slave trade almost single-handed and then by generating a stream of societies for doing good and reducing evil in national life. -

It is a business that has both spiritual and physical components for its effectiveness in the society. Spiritually, it demands prayers while physically; material possessions like money and political influence become veritable tools in enhancing its effectiveness in the world. Historically, the declaration of the Christian faith as legal religion in the Roman Empire by Constantine in the fourth century played a major role in the expansion and the subsequent consolidation of the Church. Likewise, the Clapham sect of the 18 th and 19 th centuries played a significant role in the expansion of the Church beyond the shores of Europe. Their role shows that money and political influence are good vehicles for expanding the gospel of Christ in every part of the world. This work is aimed at a espousing the role of the Clapham sect in the expansion of Christianity in the 19 th century. The aim is to use it as a guide on the best way for Christians to use their wealth and influence towards the expansion of Christianity in contemporary Nigeria. Hence, the work will apply historical method in its evaluation and interpretation. Black Freedom Days Fact Sheet - A Summary of Key Events in the Abolition of Slavery Worldwide by C.R. Gibbs, Historian of the African Diaspora January 1, 1804 Haiti celebrates independence. This country is the first modern nation to be led by a person of African descent. Haiti is the world’s only example of a successful slave revolt leading to the establishment of an internationally recognized nation or republic. Celebrations of Haiti’s existence and achievements take place throughout the Black Diaspora. September 15, 1829 Mexico abolishes slavery. March 25, 1807 The British Parliament passes the 1807 Abolition of Slave Trade Act to outlaw such trade throughout the British Empire. The Act prohibited British ships from being involved in the slave trade and marked the start of the end of the transatlantic traffic of human beings. A year later, the Royal Navy’s West African Squadron is established to suppress transatlantic slave trading. Over the next 60 years, the squadron’s anti-slavery operations along the West Coast of Africa and into East Africa and the Caribbean enforced the ban. William Wilberforce, the British Parliamentary leader of the anti-slavery movement, with key allies Thomas Clarkson, Olaudah Equiano and others, led the successful effort to convince the Parliament to pass the Act. The measure set in motion an international crusade that ultimately resulted in the outlawing of slavery worldwide. August 1, 1834 The 1833 Slavery Abolition Act takes effect to abolish slavery throughout the British Empire. At this time, the Empire spanned several continents and encompassed parts of the Caribbean, Africa, Canada, India, China, Australia, and South America as far as the tip of Argentina. -

The International Peace Movement 1815-1914: an Outline
The international peace movement 1815-1914: an outline Script of an online lecture given by Guido Grünewald on 9 June 2020* I will try to give an outline of the emergence and development of an international peace movement during its first 100 years. Since English is not my mother tongue and I haven’t spoken it for a longer time I will follow a written guideline in order to finish the job in the short time I have. The first peace organisations emerged in America and in Britain. This was no coincidence; while on the European continent after the end of the Napoleonic Wars restoration took over there were evolving democracies in the anglo-Saxon countries and a kind of peace tradition as for example carried by the quakers who renounced any kind of war. For those early societies the question if a war could be defensive and therefore justified was from the beginning a thorny issue. The New York Peace Sciety founded by merchant David Low Dodge followed a fundamental pacifism rejecting all kind of wars while the Massachussets Peace Society (its founder was unitarian minister Noah Worcester) gathered both fundamental pacifists and those who accepted strictly defensive wars. With about 50 other groups both organisations merged to become the American Peace Society in 1828. The London Peace Society had an interesting top-tier approach: its leadership had to pursue a fundamental pacifist course while ordinary members were allowed to have different ideas about defensive wars. On the European continent some short-lived peace organisations emerged only later. The formation of those first societies occured under the influence of Quakers (one of the 3 historic peace churches which renounced violence) and of Christians who were convinced that war was murderous and incompatible with Christian values.
