Page 23 Technical Specifi cations Product Overview 3 Logic Express 7 Introduction Logic Express 7, Apple’s feature-packed software for music composition and production, delivers a∂ ordable, professional-quality audio and MIDI tools. With the same interface and workfl ow as the highly acclaimed Logic Pro 7 and more than 50 software instru- ments and plug-ins, Logic Express 7 provides precise control over recording, editing, and mixing. It’s also perfect for GarageBand users seeking to step up to a more advanced application, with a studio-style mixer and the ability to edit and print perfor- mances using standard music notation. With the same fl exible layout as Logic Pro, you can dive deeper into the creation and manipulation of audio and MIDI. Since projects and skills learned in Logic Express 7 are directly transferable to Logic Pro 7, it o∂ ers a smooth transition to high-end audio production. Logic Express lets you produce a demo of your band, create a remix of your favorite track, or score QuickTime movies. This a∂ ordable virtual studio integrates a rich feature set for both music and audio production in one application. In addition to the Apple Loops you’re familiar with from GarageBand, you’ll enjoy a wide variety of software instruments with faithful emulations of vintage keyboard classics as well as synthetic sounds, ranging from digital to virtual analog. Composers, music teachers, and students will also appreciate the full-featured Score editor. Product Overview 4 Logic Express 7 Logic Express 7 at a Glance Professional-Quality Recording and Editing Record a complete band in Logic Express with seamless integration of professional multichannel audio hardware. In contrast to GarageBand, Logic Express enables you to record up to 12 instruments, voices, and more all at the same time. Then you can adjust and edit each of these tracks to present the best musical performance possible. High-resolution audio of up to 24-bit/96kHz, the adaptive self-confi guring Track Mixer, and 32-bit fl oating-point math provide professional sound quality. Sample editor A powerful Sample editor is incorporated in Logic Express 7, allowing precise editing of your audio data. Beyond simple operations such as cut, copy, and paste, an exten- sive suite of DSP (digital signal processing) tools is also available. These tools include time stretching, pitch shifting, and formant correction. In the Sample editor, you can correct improper timing (or adjust the timing) of your audio recordings, translate pitched monophonic audio recordings into notation, or extract the rhythm of an audio drum loop for use as a quantization template on MIDI performances. Arrange The Arrange window—or simply the Arrange—forms the heart of Logic Express 7. This is where you typically record and arrange your music. All audio and MIDI data, including Apple Loops, used in your song are represented as graphical objects. These objects can be moved and edited in multiple ways to form an elaborate arrangement. Audio recordings and MIDI keyboard performances are captured and displayed in a linear fashion, vertically divided into tracks. In addition, you can adjust automation parameters for each track, e∂ ect, and software instrument right in the Arrange window. Product Overview 5 Logic Express 7 Arrange Window 4 3 1 2 1 Control critical mixing functions, software instruments, 3 Automate mixing and e∂ ect parameters with the same e∂ ects, and routing for any track. powerful tools the pros use. 2 Create and arrange music with software instruments, Apple 4 Import QuickTime movies and create music for video. Loops, and live recordings of instruments and vocals. At the top of the Arrange, you’ll fi nd the new Global Tracks. These show the Video Track and other Global Tracks that display general information about the song, such as tempo and harmony. All Global Track parameters can be graphically edited in the same fashion as the track automation system, making them easy to use. Beyond the arrangement of audio, Apple Loops, and MIDI objects, numerous editing possibilities are o∂ ered in the Arrange. Among them is the Time Stretching feature, which allows you to quickly alter the length of an audio object to match a specifi ed number of bars without a∂ ecting the pitch of your audio. The Marquee tool assists precise move, copy, delete, or cut edits by allowing you to select specifi c portions of audio and MIDI objects. The channel strip of the selected track is displayed to the left of the Arrange, enabling you to make mix adjustments directly in this window. This gives you fast access to mixer parameters, external MIDI devices, and internal e∂ ect and software instrument plug-ins for the track you are working on. You can freely customize the way the Arrange is displayed by selecting di∂ erent zoom levels for each track, as well as several other visual options. This fl exibility allows you to create a central interface for your projects, providing an optimized overview that matches your individual needs and accelerates your workfl ow. Product Overview 6 Logic Express 7 Mixer The Track Mixer in Logic Express 7 controls a maximum of 255 audio tracks, 64 audio instrument tracks, and a nearly unlimited number of MIDI tracks. Each audio and software instrument track can display and use up to 15 insert plug-ins and 8 e∂ ect bus sends. Logic Express o∂ ers 42 e∂ ect plug-ins and supports additional Audio Units (AU) format plug-ins. It also features a core collection of 26 software instruments. As with the e∂ ects, additional AU instrument plug-ins are supported. The parameters of software instruments and e∂ ects, as well as those of the mixer, are integrated into the comprehensive automation system, allowing full, total-recall mixes. The settings of complete channel strips can now be saved, loaded, and pasted, making it much easier to insert your favorite software instruments and plug-in combinations and settings. The mixer supports a range of hardware controllers, from simple home studio models to high-end professional control surfaces that are deeply integrated into the Logic system. Generic control surfaces—for example, faders and knobs of your MIDI keyboard—can be easily customized in a convenient MIDI Learn dialog. The fi nal mix is written to disk in industry-standard formats such as SDII, WAV, AIFF, AAC, and MP3, including ID 3 tags. You can even bounce your song to a stereo audio fi le and immediately burn it to CD in your Macintosh CD-RW drive or add it directly to your iTunes music library. Apple Loops Support Remixers and electronic music composers can’t live without loops. Logic Express 7 o∂ ers the familiar Apple Loops browser of GarageBand, hosting a multitude of Apple Loops. Browse quickly through the largest libraries simply by specifying instrument, genre, or mood. Preview them instantly at your song’s tempo and pitch. Logic Express confi gures the channel strip automatically for Apple Loops on software instrument tracks. What’s more, you can use the Apple Loops Utility to construct your own Apple Loops from conventional audio fi les such as recordings or bounced phrases produced with software instruments. First introduced in Soundtrack and later in GarageBand, Apple Loops have quickly become popular. A huge range of professional sound libraries is o∂ ered in the Apple Loops format. The inclusion of Apple Loops support in Logic brings the fi le format to professional music production applications for the fi rst time. At fi rst glance, Apple Loops appear to be integrated into Logic Express 7 much like conventional audio fi les. They are visible in the Audio window, can be dragged onto an audio track, and are edited in the same fashion as other audio fi les. Apple Loops di∂ er from conventional audio fi le formats in that they allow time stretching in real time and seamlessly fi t arrangements of di∂ erent tempos. They can also easily match the master key of the song, because real-time pitch shifting is possible as well. Apple Loops that incorporate all of these qualities are considered audio loops and are indicated by a blue sound wave icon. Apple Loops fi les with a green note icon are considered software instrument loops and o∂ er additional functions, such as the ability to be added to a MIDI track in the Arrange window. Such loops are handled just like other MIDI regions, including individual note editing. Dragging these green Apple Loops onto a “blank” audio instrument track results in the automatic insertion of the corresponding software instrument, e∂ ect, and input settings. This “whole channel” approach uses far less data than a standard audio fi le, and it makes the swapping of loops from one song to another or sharing ideas with other musicians simpler and faster. Product Overview 7 Logic Express 7 Loop browsing Logic Express 7 o∂ ers the Apple Loops Browser for convenient searching of Apple Loops. Based on the GarageBand browser, the Apple Loops Browser lets you fi nd loops by instrument, genre, or mood. Search results are shown as a listing in the lower half of the window.
