Logic Express 7 at a Glance

Professional-Quality Recording and Editing a complete band in Logic Express with seamless integration of professional multichannel audio hardware. In contrast to GarageBand, Logic Express enables you to record up to 12 instruments, voices, and more all at the same time. Then you can adjust and edit each of these tracks to present the best musical performance possible. High-resolution audio of up to 24-bit/96kHz, the adaptive self-confi guring Track Mixer, and 32-bit fl oating-point math provide professional sound quality.

Sample editor A powerful Sample editor is incorporated in Logic Express 7, allowing precise editing of your audio data. Beyond simple operations such as cut, copy, and paste, an exten- sive suite of DSP (digital signal processing) tools is also available. These tools include time stretching, pitch shifting, and formant correction. In the Sample editor, you can correct improper timing (or adjust the timing) of your audio recordings, pitched monophonic audio recordings into notation, or extract the rhythm of an audio drum loop for use as a quantization template on MIDI performances.

Arrange The Arrange window—or simply the Arrange—forms the heart of Logic Express 7. This is where you typically record and arrange your music. All audio and MIDI data, including Apple Loops, used in your song are represented as graphical objects. These objects can be moved and edited in multiple ways to form an elaborate arrangement. Audio recordings and MIDI keyboard performances are captured and displayed in a linear fashion, vertically divided into tracks. In addition, you can adjust automation parameters for each track, e∂ ect, and software instrument right in the Arrange window. Product Overview 5 Logic Express 7

At the top of the Arrange, you’ll fi nd the new Global Tracks. These show the Video Track and other Global Tracks that display general information about the song, such as and harmony. All Global Track parameters can be graphically edited in the same fashion as the track automation system, making them easy to use. Beyond the arrangement of audio, Apple Loops, and MIDI objects, numerous editing possibilities are o∂ ered in the Arrange. Among them is the Time Stretching feature, which allows you to quickly alter the length of an audio object to match a specifi ed number of bars without a∂ ecting the pitch of your audio. The Marquee tool assists precise move, copy, delete, or cut edits by allowing you to select specifi portions of audio and MIDI objects. The channel strip of the selected track is displayed to the left of the Arrange, enabling you to make mix adjustments directly in this window. This gives you fast access to mixer parameters, external MIDI devices, and internal e∂ ect and software instrument plug-ins for the track you are working on. You can freely customize the way the Arrange is displayed by selecting di∂ erent zoom levels for each track, as well as several other visual options. This fl exibility allows you to create a central interface for your projects, providing an optimized overview that matches your individual needs and accelerates your workfl ow. Mixer The Track Mixer in Logic Express 7 controls a maximum of 255 audio tracks, 64 audio instrument tracks, and a nearly unlimited number of MIDI tracks. Each audio and software instrument track can display and use up to 15 insert plug-ins and 8 e∂ ect bus sends. Logic Express o∂ ers 42 e∂ ect plug-ins and supports additional (AU) format plug-ins. It also features a core collection of 26 software instruments. As with the e∂ ects, additional AU instrument plug-ins are supported. The parameters of software instruments and e∂ ects, as well as those of the mixer, are integrated into the comprehensive automation system, allowing full, total-recall mixes. The settings of complete channel strips can now be saved, loaded, and pasted, making it much easier to insert your favorite software instruments and plug-in combinations and settings. The mixer supports a range of hardware controllers, from simple home studio models to high-end professional control surfaces that are deeply integrated into the Logic system. Generic control surfaces—for example, faders and knobs of your MIDI keyboard—can be easily customized in a convenient MIDI Learn dialog. The fi nal mix is written to disk in industry-standard formats such as SDII, WAV, AIFF, AAC, and MP3, including ID 3 tags. You can even bounce your song to a stereo audio fi le and immediately burn it to CD in your CD-RW drive or add it directly to your iTunes music library.

Apple Loops Support Remixers and electronic music composers can’t live without loops. Logic Express 7 o∂ ers the familiar Apple Loops browser of GarageBand, hosting a multitude of Apple Loops. Browse quickly through the largest libraries simply by specifying instrument, genre, or mood. Preview them instantly at your song’s tempo and pitch. Logic Express confi gures the channel strip automatically for Apple Loops on software instrument tracks. What’s more, you can use the Apple Loops Utility to construct your own Apple Loops from conventional audio fi les such as recordings or bounced phrases produced with software instruments. First introduced in Soundtrack and later in GarageBand, Apple Loops have quickly become popular. A huge range of professional sound libraries is o∂ ered in the Apple Loops format. The inclusion of Apple Loops support in Logic brings the fi le format to professional music production applications for the fi rst time. At fi rst glance, Apple Loops appear to be integrated into Logic Express 7 much like conventional audio fi les. They are visible in the Audio window, can be dragged onto an audio track, and are edited in the same fashion as other audio fi les. Apple Loops di∂ er from conventional audio fi le formats in that they allow time stretching in real time and seamlessly fi t arrangements of di∂ erent . They can also easily match the master key of the song, because real-time pitch shifting is possible as well. Apple Loops that incorporate all of these qualities are considered audio loops and are indicated by a blue sound wave icon. Apple Loops fi les with a green note icon are considered software instrument loops and o∂ er additional functions, such as the ability to be added to a MIDI track in the Arrange window. Such loops are handled just like other MIDI regions, including individual note editing. Dragging these green Apple Loops onto a “blank” audio instrument track results in the automatic insertion of the corresponding software instrument, e∂ ect, and input settings. This “whole channel” approach uses far less data than a standard audio fi le, and it makes the swapping of loops from one song to another or sharing ideas with other musicians simpler and faster. Product Overview 7 Logic Express 7

Loop browsing Logic Express 7 o∂ ers the Apple Loops Browser for convenient searching of Apple Loops. Based on the GarageBand browser, the Apple Loops Browser lets you fi nd loops by instrument, genre, or mood. Search results are shown as a listing in the lower half of the window. Click a fi lename in the list to immediately hear the loop. Drag the desired loop directly into the Arrange window—where it will be played in the right key and automatically time stretched to the song tempo.

Apple Loops Utility The Apple Loops Utility allows you to create your own Apple Loops from a simple audio fi le. You can add data to specify the attributes of the fi le, allowing it to be listed and easily found in the Apple Loops Browser. The Apple Loops Utility also allows the addition of tags that describe the rhythmic elements of the audio fi le. This is achieved through analysis and transient detection of the audio fi le, resulting in a set of markers. You can also manually add markers or move existing markers to new locations. These markers provide a reference for Logic Express 7, allowing real-time stretching of audio data.

MIDI Processing MIDI processing provides control over external sound devices as well as software instruments and e∂ ects. These can be internal instruments and plug-ins or Audio Units plug-ins. You can also record MIDI keyboard or other MIDI instrument controller performances in Logic Express 7. This two-way link between the ’s internal processing and external MIDI hardware underlines the position of Logic Express 7 as the creative center of the production process. Logic Express 7 supports the native MIDI functions of Mac OS X . Most MIDI tasks, such as adding new devices, routing, and so on, are executed in the Mac OS X Audio MIDI Setup (AMS) utility. All information can be forwarded to Logic Express 7, providing convenient access to your MIDI devices. An additional advantage of the deep integration of OS-native MIDI with Logic Express 7 is reliable MIDI data transmission at minimal latencies. This enhances the playability of software instruments and accelerates setup and workfl ow. You can freely record MIDI melodies and arrangements via USB MIDI keyboards or MIDI interfaces, or import MIDI fi les into your projects. There are no boundaries for your imagination, as a nearly unlimited number of MIDI tracks allow the creation of vast arrangements. The Logic Express 7 user interface o∂ ers several editors that provide graphical and numerical control over MIDI data. The Environment window graphically illustrates data fl ow and enables extensive data manipulation options. The automation system in the Arrange window allows you to make precise edits to MIDI parameters while viewing the song’s arrangement. The Matrix and Hyper editors allow convenient edits via the manipulation of graphical objects. The alphanumeric Event editor provides compre- hensive information on every detail of recorded MIDI events.

Environment window The Environment is a virtual representation of your physical MIDI hardware. The entire data fl ow of your MIDI system is visible onscreen. MIDI processing objects such as arpeggiators, chord memorizers, faders, and delays can be inserted at almost any point in the data stream. The Environment provides you with the tools to perform a range of tasks. For example, you can construct dedicated remote controllers for MIDI devices, build a step sequencer, or perhaps simply fade between two audio tracks with the modulation wheel. What’s New in Logic Express 7?

GarageBand Support Logic Express 7 allows you to get deeper into the creation and manipulation of soft- ware instruments and recorded audio, as well as o∂ ering professional-quality mixing and editing—expanding the possibilities and control beyond what can be achieved in GarageBand. Songs created in GarageBand open and play perfectly in Logic Express. And full support for Apple Loops and the inclusion of the Loops browser means familiar functionality between GarageBand, Logic Express, Logic Pro, and Soundtrack. Templates designed around common project types, including a template designed for GarageBand users, help you get started with Logic Express.

Apple Loops Support Apple Loops are an audio fi le format that—in contrast to standard audio fi le types— can be time stretched and transposed in real time. Time stretching of Apple Loops doesn’t result in a pitch change, and the reverse is true, with pitch changes having no impact on tempo. Additional data stored in Apple Loops fi les enables Logic Express 7 to handle these fi les with ease. In addition, some Apple Loops can be imported either as audio loops or as MIDI loops. This unique behavior provides a level of creative fl ex- ibility that was previously unimaginable. First introduced in Soundtrack, Apple Loops have become very popular thanks to their integration in GarageBand. The supplemental information incorporated in the Apple Loops fi le format helps GarageBand users—including those with limited musical experience—to produce their own music. In a more professional environment, these properties are useful for time stretching and real-time pitch shifting. Logic Express 7 imports complete GarageBand songs as well, allowing a quick musical sketch created in GarageBand to be developed into a full-blown music production. Apple Loops that can be imported as MIDI loops are called software instrument loops. These loops contain MIDI performance data as well as the software instrument and e∂ ect confi guration used to generate them. The result is that they sound and play exactly like the audio fi le version. The benefi t is that users now have the freedom to change the instrument, e∂ ects, or even individual notes. Product Overview 10 Logic Express 7

New Software Instruments EFM1 The EFM1 completes the family of basic software instruments that include the ESM and ESE. Its sounds are generated with FM synthesis. This technology was popularized in the synthesizers of the 1980s. The EFM1 enables you to re-create the classic synthe- sizer sounds of this era. Whether you are creating expressive lead sounds, soft strings, powerful bass, or crystal-clear bells, the richness of FM synthesis works well in a variety of musical contexts. The tidy, straightforward interface is easily accessible and makes tweaking sounds a pleasure. Alternatively, you can let the EFM1 create its own sounds by chance through the randomize function.

GarageBand instruments The GarageBand instruments are the collection of software instruments provided in the GarageBand application. The inclusion of these instruments enables you to open and work on GarageBand projects in Logic Express 7. Logic Express is the ideal partner for fl eshing out musical ideas created in the popular GarageBand. You also benefi t from the impressive combination of sonic excellence and enhanced editing features available in the Logic Express user interface.

New Plug-ins Guitar Amp The Guitar Amp plug-in enables guitarists to play their instrument through faithful re-creations of guitar amplifi ers and speakers—directly in Logic Express 7. The guitar must be connected to your Mac either with an appropriate cable plugged directly into the audio input on the Mac or via an additional USB-, FireWire-, or PCI-based audio hardware interface. Guitar Amp o∂ ers a wide range of legendary guitar amplifi er sounds and a number of di∂ erent speakers that can be freely combined. As with all other Logic Express 7 plug-ins, Guitar Amp can be inserted in any audio or audio instrument channel for sound processing. This makes it a worthwhile distortion e∂ ect not only for guitar, but also for any other type of sound.

PlatinumVerb The PlatinumVerb plug-in sonically matches other premium native reverb algorithms, without massively taxing your processor. The sustain phase of the PlatinumVerb is impressive, with a silky tone that is normally found only in the best stand-alone devices. The true dual-band concept maximizes natural room characteristics during the release phase, and the comprehensive parameter set guarantees precise control when mixing.

AutoFilter The AutoFilter creates classic, analog-style hardware e∂ ects, an e∂ ect that is popular especially in dance music. It features a selectable low-pass fi lter slope (6, 12, 18, or 24 dB), a complete ADSR, and a powerful LFO, with speed modulation on the input signal. As higher resonance values cause the fi lter to cut the bottom end, signals tend to sound thinner. The Fatness parameter compensates for this audio artifact. The distortion e∂ ect on the input and output of the AutoFilter will delight fans of aggressive sounds. The resonance controller invites you to experiment, as self-oscillation is initiated before you max out the parameter. Product Overview 11 Logic Express 7

Compressor The development of the has benefi ted from intensive analysis of the temporal controller reactions of leading analog compressors. Functions such as a Peak/RMS switch and 10-stage control for soft and hard knee characteristics provide precise control over the dynamic character. The practical AutoGain feature ensures that a normalized input signal results in a normalized output signal—regardless of the threshold and ratio levels.

Preset Multipressor The Preset Multipressor is a powerful mastering tool that maximizes loudness of your production without audible side e∂ ects.

Phaser The sound of the Phaser is unsurpassed even by the most expensive analog devices. The concept of mixable LFOs, taken from the Modulation , is extended by level- dependent of LFO 1. You can determine the modulation width and range by defi ning the limits of the modulation with highest ( Ceiling) and lowest (Sweep Floor) values. The Stereo Phase knob is used to defi ne the phase for the left and right channels. The slider is used to add further intensity to the e∂ ect.

BitCrusher The rough character of low-resolution digital signals can provide a desirable distor- tion e∂ ect. Simulations of the legendary Fairlight CMI, or even the 4-bit sound of the Commodore 64, are just two usage examples for the . This e∂ ect adds a precisely measured amount of artifi cial aliasing to the signal, resulting in e∂ ects that resemble a slightly detuned shortwave radio right through to drastic distortion e∂ ects.

Other Application Improvements AAC support Logic Express 7 now supports the (AAC) format, which com- bines high sonic quality and multichannel support with improved encoding e∑ ciency and better compression than MP3. Its quality makes AAC the codec of choice for many Internet, wireless, and digital broadcast situations. AAC is directly supported by iTunes, making it easy to transfer your songs to iTunes and the iPod.

New Arrange window edit modes The main working window in Logic Express 7 is the Arrange, which provides the best overview of a project. You use the Arrange to move and edit MIDI or audio regions in order to arrange your song. An integrated channel strip allows direct access to mixing parameters. Logic Express 7 further refi nes the capabilities of the Arrange window with additional editing modes: • Shuπ e mode keeps regions from overlapping by restraining movement in relation to other regions. • Crossfade mode automatically applies crossfades to overlapping regions. Product Overview 12 Logic Express 7

Productivity Enhancements Improved project file management The ability to manage all project-dependent fi les has been greatly enhanced in Logic Express 7. You can easily consolidate all audio fi les, MIDI data, song fi les, plug-in and instrument settings, and movie data into a project folder. You can also create a project folder at the start of a project and have all imported media automatically copied or moved into the folder in the background as you work.

Global Tracks The new Global Tracks provide a graphical display for control over global song events. Global Tracks appear just below the Bar Ruler in several editing windows, including the Arrange, Matrix Edit, Score Edit, and Hyper Edit windows. Global Track editing is much like Automation editing, but it has been expanded with a number of intelligent analysis tools. To prevent Global Tracks from constantly occupying precious screen space, they can be individually shown or hidden. Those working on movie scores will especially appreciate the benefi ts of Global Tracks such as the Video Track. This track shows the movie as thumbnails and has an option to detect movie cuts. A marker can be automatically placed in the Marker Track at every detected cut position. In contrast to “normal” markers, movie markers are SMPTE synchronized to the movie and retain their positions even when the tempo is changed. The Tempo Track contains all song tempo changes and allows you to insert new events and edit them graphically. The Transpose Track indicates and allows changes to the chord root. This is especially useful when you want to transpose an entire song, resulting in a new chord progres- sion. The Transpose Track and Chord Track are always linked, so that changes to one result in the appropriate change in the other. The Signature Track displays all basic time and key signatures in a song. This informa- tion is especially pertinent for the Score editor, but also infl uences the functionality of Apple Loops. Product Overview 14 Logic Express 7

Software Instruments

EXSP24 mkII One of the most revolutionary instruments of the past 20 years is the sampler. This instrument is found in hardware form in nearly every studio. The revolution now continues—as a software instrument. The EXS Player 24 plug-in for Logic Express 7 o∂ ers many of the features that made the EXS24 such a success. The EXSP24 is ideal for any musician who requires access to an extensive and ever- expanding sound library, but has no desire to deal with the sample recording process. With its crystal-clear 32-bit processing quality, the EXSP24 gives you direct, real-time control over these sounds. It reads its native sample format and also SoundFont2 and AKAI S1000/3000 compliant samples—at resolutions of 8 to 24 bit and at sample rates ranging from 11kHz to 96kHz. All EXSP24 users receive over 500MB of sounds from the world’s fi nest sample instrument library cost-free when they register, so they can concentrate on the most important thing from the start: the music. The fi rst-class sound manipulation capabilities of the EXSP24 breathe life into any sample instrument. The core of its sound sculpting revolves around a superior low- pass fi lter with an integrated distortion and fatness circuit. This ensures excellent low frequency response, even at high resonance settings. Mono and modes support the most expressive and subtle playing styles for solo instruments. Two LFOs plus two blindingly fast, punchy envelopes per voice cater to the most delicate or dramatic movement in pitch, fi lter frequency, volume, and panorama settings. In addition to these modulation options, there is a velocity-sensitive pitch envelope or glide, and sample start-point and envelope attack times can further respond to velocity. The innovative, ergonomic user interface of the EXSP24 takes sampler use to a new level of simplicity: no more tedious searching through endless menus and dealing with miniscule displays. With the EXSP24, you have a complete, at-a-glance overview of your sound settings. Additional interface features include the unique double-sliders and cuto∂ -resonance-chaining facilities, o∂ ering simultaneous control over multiple parameters. These creative solutions ensure the most e∑ cient workfl ow, allowing you to realize your sonic ideas quickly and easily. Product Overview 15 Logic Express 7

ES1 The ES1 has the heart of many classic analog favorites, and it includes all of the details and facilities that fans of this type of sound generation know and love. It is rich with character and elegantly combines 30 years of synthesizer history for Logic Express. O∂ ering up to 16-voice polyphony, every ES1 voice features a main oscillator and sub-oscillator delivering the raw sonic material shaped by the analog ES1 fi lter. Each oscillator features a set of “classic” waveforms including triangle, sawtooth, and variable pulse. The sub-oscillator, with its own fi ve waveforms, operates one or two octaves below the main oscillator, adding a solid bass fundament. In addition, the sub- oscillator provides a noise source and an input for an external audio signal, allowing audio tracks to be processed with rhythmically changing fi lter movements. All of this technology is perfect if you want to create earth-shaking basses, rich pads, textures, screaming leads, ultra-sharp percussion, or exotic e∂ ects in Logic Express.

The E-Series The design of the EFM1, ESM, ESE, and ESP software instruments combines high sound quality, simple handling, and modest processing demands in an ideal way. The EFM1 is based on the frequency modulation sound generation method. Its straightforward interface provides access to classic FM synthesizer sounds ranging from pads and strings to full-bodied basses and crystal-clear bells. The ESM is a monophonic bass synthesizer that is ideal for the creation of powerful basses and expressive lead sounds. It provides variable selection between sawtooth and rectangular waves. A source of particular interest is the resonance-capable dynamic low-pass fi lter, with a biting slope characteristic of 24 dB. One of the strengths of the eight-voice polyphonic ESP is the characteristic eighties pop music synthesizer brass sounds, for example. In addition to the oscillator, sub- oscillator, and fi lter, the ESP o∂ ers an LFO for creating wah-wah e∂ ects and an ADSR envelope generator for precise level control. The ESE is an eight-voice polyphonic synthesizer as well. It is specially designed for pad sounds. The basis of its sound generation is sawtooth or rectangular waves, which can be mixed in a near-infi nite variety of base tones. The sawtooth wave can be modulated in frequency, the rectangular wave in impulse width. The ESE o∂ ers selectable attack and release times, a dynamic low-pass fi lter, and a three-step chorus/ensemble e∂ ect.

GarageBand Instruments GarageBand instruments are integrated in Logic Express, making the import of GarageBand projects simple and trouble-free. The synthesizer sounds, E-, organs, and Clavinet GarageBand instruments share the same algorithms or incorpo- rate the same high-quality samples as their Logic software instrument counterparts. In comparison to their professional relatives—found in Logic Pro—their user interface is simpler, the instruments load faster, and they use less processing power, but the sonic results are extraordinarily exciting. The limitation to a few powerful parameters makes using the instruments exceptionally easy, with any tweaks resulting in immediate and spectacular changes in sound. E∂ ect Plug-ins

Reverb PlatinumVerb The PlatinumVerb plug-in sonically matches other premium native reverb algorithms, without massively taxing your processor—a sure indicator of a brilliant algorithm. The sustain phase of the PlatinumVerb is impressive, with a silky tone that is normally found only in the best stand-alone devices. The true dual-band concept maximizes natural room characteristics during the release phase, and the comprehensive param- eter set guarantees precise control when mixing.

GoldVerb The GoldVerb is based on the PlatinumVerb algorithm but is far more processor- friendly. It features a simplifi ed user interface, making it easy to handle and providing optimum control for countless musical situations.

SilverVerb The SilverVerb provides e∂ ective control of an impressive reverb e∂ ect with just three parameters. An additional low and high cut fi lter infl uences the character of the reverb tail.

AVerb Based on a simple processor-e∑ cient reverb algorithm, the AVerb delivers remarkably good results for all types of signals.

Filter and Vocoder AutoFilter The AutoFilter creates classic, analog-style hardware synthesizer e∂ ects.

Fuzz and Wah The Fuzz and Wah e∂ ects—borrowed from the EVD6 Clavinet in Logic Pro 7—are combined in a single plug-in that can be used to process any sound source in the Logic Express 7 mixer. The Wah e∂ ect provides six di∂ erent fi lter types that simulate legendary e∂ ect pedals such as the Morley or CryBaby. The envelope can be changed and automated onscreen or controlled via MIDI. The distortion of the Fuzz-Wah works on frequencies between 2000Hz and 20,000Hz. Every sonic detail can be controlled Product Overview 17 Logic Express 7

with parameters that infl uence intensity or compression, for example. The AutoGain function guarantees the maximum peak level, without overloads, preventing mix artifacts when extreme settings are used.

Delays Tape Delay The Tape Delay recognizes the tempo in Logic Express. Just click the Sync button and delay repeats will fi t to the beat. The Groove slider o∂ ers smooth switching between triplet and dotted notes (this corresponds to the Logic Express 7 Swing parameter). Delay time can be modulated with an LFO as well. Once you’ve experienced the sounds created by fading the feedback slider to create virtual tape loop saturation, or hear the desired frequency range more clearly with each repetition, you’ll know it’s time to get rid of your analog tape echo.

Stereo Delay The Stereo Delay o∂ ers similar controller features as the Tape Delay, although tape saturation is missing, making it even more processor e∑ cient. The feedback level is separately controllable for each stereo channel and is rounded out with a separately controllable cross-feedback level. As a result, interesting rhythmic structures can be easily created.

Sample Delay The Sample Delay allows a channel signal to be delayed by single sample values. It is used as a precise correction tool when runtime problems occur in multichannel recordings.

Distortion Guitar Amp Guitar Amp o∂ ers a variety of exciting guitar amplifi er e∂ ects. A number of e∂ ect presets, created by recording engineers, make it easy for every guitarist to fi nd the “right” sound, whatever the style—jazz, blues, rock, or anything else.

Overdrive and Distortion Overdrive and Distortion are well-known e∂ ects. Move the Drive slider to increase transistor saturation. The Tone knob fi lters the harmonic-laden distortion signal, resulting in softer tonal characteristics. The di∂ erence between the two e∂ ects is the softer overmodulation of fi eld-e∂ ect transistors (overdrive) in contrast to the harder overmodulation of bipolar transistors (distortion).

BitCrusher The rough character of low-resolution digital signals can provide a desirable distor- tion e∂ ect. Simulations of the legendary Fairlight CMI, or even the 4-bit sound of the Commodore 64, are just two usage examples for the BitCrusher. This e∂ ect adds a precisely measured amount of artifi cial aliasing to the signal, resulting in e∂ ects that resemble a slightly detuned shortwave radio right through to drastic distortion e∂ ects.

Clip Distortion The Clip Distortion plug-in is specially designed for fans of the classic “tube sound” who also like to experiment. On one hand, it o∂ ers extreme, nonlinear distortion e∂ ects. On the other, it is suitable for authentic re-creations of warm tube amplifi er sounds. Product Overview 18 Logic Express 7

Phase Distortion The Phase Distortion plug-in is based on a modulated delay line, much like the well-known chorus and fl anger e∂ ects. As opposed to these e∂ ects, the delay time is modulated not by a low-frequency oscillator (LFO) but by a low-pass-fi ltered version of the audio input signal itself, allowing the signal to modulate its own phase position.

Dynamics Compressor The development of the Compressor has benefi ted from intensive analysis of the temporal controller reactions of leading analog compressors. Functions such as a Peak/RMS switch and 10-stage control for soft and hard knee characteristics provide precise control over the dynamic character. The practical AutoGain feature ensures that a normalized input signal results in a normalized output signal—regardless of the threshold and ratio levels.

Preset Multipressor The Preset Multipressor is an e∑ cient all-around tool for mastering situations. Based on years of audio engineering expertise, the Preset Multipressor precisely maximizes the loudness of the summed audio signal, without unwanted artifacts.

Silver Compressor Based on the response of fi ne analog compressors, the Silver Compressor tightens up the dynamics of a signal. The perceived volume of the track is increased, making it indispensable on vocal or drum tracks.

Silver Gate Traditionally used for noise suppression, the gate can also be used for creative sound sculpting. The way a gate works is simple: Signals that lie above the threshold are allowed to pass through. Anything below the defi ned threshold is completely muted.

Limiter The Limiter is one of the standard processes used on summed stereo signals for mastering. The limiting level is based on a user-defi ned compression ratio, which usually kicks in at higher threshold levels.

EQ Channel EQ (Four Band) The Channel EQ is the standard EQ in Logic Express 7. Perfect has never been so easy, intuitive, precise, and e∑ cient. The Channel EQ seamlessly unites two tools in one plug-in. In addition, it is possible to see a thumbnail view of the Channel EQ curve displayed in the upper portion of a channel strip. The comprehensive FFT analyzer o∂ ers the ultimate overview when mixing. It provides a real-time visual map of the inserted signal over the entire frequency spectrum, making any audible changes in the sound immediately visible. The main strength of the Channel EQ, however, is its outstanding sound quality. Tight, heavy bass, clearly defi ned treble, and tonal transparency will impress the most critical of listeners. In contrast to the Fat EQ, the frequency resolution and enhanced fl exibility of the Channel EQ have been markedly improved. Its four bands allow for more precise EQ control over the fi nest sonic details. All bands are fully parametric. Although it is a highly precise mixing tool, the Channel EQ o∂ ers a darker side: The two resonant fi lters feature a maximum slope parameter of 48 dB, allowing you to make drastic sound changes and create radical e∂ ects and fi lter sweeps whenever you want some “bite” in your sound. Product Overview 19 Logic Express 7

You’ll quickly realize that the Channel EQ places modest demands on processor resources. It uses 30 percent less processing power than its predecessor, the Fat EQ. With its seamless integration in the Logic mixer and extensive support by various professional controller surfaces, you’ll soon fi nd that nothing less than the Channel EQ will do. For compatibility, Logic Express 7 also includes fi lters and EQs from earlier Logic versions. This enables you to revisit and polish your old Logic songs.

Modulation Modulation Delay The Modulation Delay could have been named “Hyper Flanger and SuperChorus,” as it allows you to smoothly slide between these e∂ ects. In contrast to a simple chorus or fl anger, two mixable LFOs modulate delay time (or amplitude). The innovative Anti Pitch button ensures that the pitch of the modulated signal remains constant, and Constant Mod guarantees a constant modulation depth—regardless of the LFO frequencies. Phase relationships of the modulation are independently controllable on each channel.

Phaser The sound of the Phaser is unsurpassed even by the most expensive analog devices. The concept of mixable LFOs, taken from the Modulation Delay, is extended by level- dependent frequency modulation of LFO 1. You can determine the modulation width and range by defi ning the limits of the modulation with highest (Sweep Ceiling) and lowest (Sweep Floor) values. The Stereo Phase knob is used to defi ne the phase for the left and right channels. The Color slider is used to add further intensity to the e∂ ect.

Tremolo The Tremolo modulates the signal’s amplitude cyclically, producing repeated varia- tions in volume within a selected frequency range. Symmetry controls the relationship between the quietest and loudest phases. Smoothing infl uences the character of the volume change. In contrast to the Vibrato e∂ ect, Tremolo doesn’t a∂ ect the pitch of the signal.

Spreader The Spreader plug-in widens the stereo spectrum with an e∂ ect that is quite similar to a chorus. The frequency range of the original signal is periodically shifted in a nonlinear way.

Scanner Vibrato The Scanner Vibrato e∂ ect plug-in simulates the scanner vibrato section of the legendary B3 organ. It is based on an analog delay line, consisting of a chain of delayed low-pass fi lter elements. This unique e∂ ect can’t be simulated with conven- tional LFOs. The Scanner Vibrato emulates this extraordinary e∂ ect and provides control over speed and chorus amount.

Flanger The Flanger is a popular modulation e∂ ect for all types of popular music. It houses a comb-fi lter that is modulated in speed and intensity.

Chorus The Chorus is mainly used to impart spatial information, especially on mono signals. Product Overview 20 Logic Express 7

Special and Helper Plug-ins Pitch Shifter The Pitch Shifter detunes the signal in semitones and cents (1/100 of a semitone step). Three algorithms (Drums, Speech, Vocals) are optimized for di∂ erent source material. Selecting Drums leaves the groove of the original track intact. Vocals is well suited for any signals that are inherently harmonic or melodic. Speech, a mixture of the two, is useful for complex signals such as spoken-word performances.

Denoiser The Denoiser cleans up your recordings by separating the desired signal from the noise fl oor. No matter whether it is high blue or dark pink, the noise level of any audio source can be dramatically reduced, while retaining the highest possible dynamic level. Who Uses Logic Express 7?

Logic Express 7 is an a∂ ordable recording, editing, and mixing solution that’s perfect for the following customers.

Musicians who want to step into professional-style music creation Musicians who have outgrown GarageBand or who want more power and control over their music will fi nd Logic Express 7 a great way to get started in professional- style music composition, recording, editing, and mixing. Apple Loops will help the creative process get started quickly and provide an easy and helpful professional- sounding backing band when other musicians aren’t available—or quite good enough. Logic Express also gives musicians the ability to fi ne-tune and correct recorded audio and MIDI performance to help the fi nal production sound as good as possible. Included software instruments and e∂ ects give musicians a broad palette of sounds to use in their creations—turning the Mac into an extremely versatile instrument and audio production system. And the ability to add instruments and e∂ ects using Audio Units plug-ins will keep things interesting.

Education Logic Express 7 fi ts perfectly into the secondary school recording curriculum and the higher education composition, recording, and synthesis curriculum. Its attractive price is the primary reason these customers will choose Logic Express over Logic Pro. In addition to individual student and teacher pricing, volume licensing is available for lab installations. No XSKey is required for Logic Express, making it easier to maintain multiseat labs. And because Logic Express features a full-featured Score editor, students don’t have to buy additional software to compose and print professional score sheets of their arrangements.

Songwriters Logic Express is a great solution for musicians who write songs for all genres from scratch. In some cases they are the performing artists, while in others they are gener- ating material for a performing artist. While GarageBand is also a good tool for these people who want a quick “scratch pad” for ideas, Logic Express allows them to do more detailed work, creating higher-quality demos with more complex structure in both arrangement and mix. Songwriters can then communicate their songs with “traditional” and tablature score sheets. Product Overview 22 Logic Express 7

Hip-hop and dance music producers/artists who want to step up to professional-style tools These musicians do a lot of composing by creatively combining, arranging, editing, and processing existing audio loop fi les. They also rely heavily on step sequencer–based devices and analog synthesizers—both hardware and software based. They work in all genres of dance music, from trance to house to electronica to hip-hop. Logic Express o∂ ers a great way for hip-hop and dance music producers to gain valuable experience with the same types of tools and techniques professionals use to create this style of music. Some of these users want to perform their Logic songs live on stage or spice up a DJ set. To control the application with more intuition, they want straightforward integra- tion of hardware controllers—especially passive fader boxes or MIDI keyboards with additional knobs. Pitch shifting and time stretching of Apple Loops is an important plus as well. Choosing Logic Express means producers can become familiar with the basic structure and tools of the professional workfl ow before stepping up to Logic Pro. And the upgrade path from Logic Express to Logic Pro saves the entire investment of Logic Express.

Bands Bands often need a way to record and mix their music to create demo CDs to get “gigs” or to share with family and friends. They need recording and mixing tools that will give them professional results whether they record in the rehearsal room or at a live . The ability of Logic Express to record multiple channels allows each instrument and to be recorded on a dedicated audio track. The ability to easily edit recorded tracks for the best possible fi nal performance provides a much more powerful alternative to a hardware based multi-track recorder. Adding a control surface delivers the hands-on experience that many users like when mixing and recording a band. Logic Express has a core set of e∂ ect plug-ins, including smooth EQs and compressors, that help create a professional-sounding fi nal mix for bands. Product Overview 23 Logic Express 7
