The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications by Helen Patterson A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Helen Patterson 2013 The Antiphonary of Bangor and its Musical Implications Helen Patterson Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the hymns of the Antiphonary of Bangor (AB) (Antiphonarium Benchorense, Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana C. 5 inf.) and considers its musical implications in medieval Ireland. Neither an antiphonary in the true sense, with chants and verses for the Office, nor a book with the complete texts for the liturgy, the AB is a unique Irish manuscript. Dated from the late seventh-century, the AB is a collection of Latin hymns, prayers and texts attributed to the monastic community of Bangor in Northern Ireland. Given the scarcity of information pertaining to music in early Ireland, the AB is invaluable for its literary insights. Studied by liturgical, medieval, and Celtic scholars, and acknowledged as one of the few surviving sources of the Irish church, the manuscript reflects the influence of the wider Christian world. The hymns in particular show that this form of poetical expression was significant in early Christian Ireland and have made a contribution to the corpus of Latin literature. Prompted by an earlier hypothesis that the AB was a type of choirbook, the chapters move from these texts to consider the monastery of Bangor and the cultural context from which the manuscript emerges. As the Irish peregrini are known to have had an impact on the continent, and the AB was recovered in ii Bobbio, Italy, it is important to recognize the hymns not only in terms of monastic development, but what they reveal about music. -

Votive Mass of Blessed Michael McGivney Diocesan Priest and Founder of the Knights of Columbus Blessed Michael McGivney, Priest He was born on August 12, 1852, in Waterbury (Connecticut) of Irish immigrant parents and baptized there on August 19 in St. Peter’s Church (predecessor to what is today the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception). Ordained priest on December 22, 1877, he was assigned to St. Mary’s Church, New Haven, where his remarkable ability to relate to all people of every social, economic and religious background became apparent. In 1882, he founded the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal benevolent association that offered spiritual and apostolic direction to Catholic men. He died of tuberculosis on August 14, 1890, while Pastor of St. Thomas’ Church in Thomaston (Connecticut) and was beatified on October 31, 2020, in Hartford (Connecticut). Father Michael McGivney was beatified on October 31, 2020, during a Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in the Archdiocese of Hartford, Conn., where an apostolic letter from Pope Francis was proclaimed, declaring that Father McGivney “henceforth be given the title of Blessed and that his liturgical memorial be kept each year on 13 August, in those places laid down by the norm of law.” A step in the process of canonization, beatification is meant primarily for devotion and veneration of the blessed within a local diocese — in this case, the Archdiocese of Hartford, in which Michael McGivney was born, served as a priest, founded the Knights of Columbus, and died. Not until a candidate for sainthood is canonized are devotion and veneration extended to the entire Church. -

São consideradas as circunstâncias históricas da restauração das diferentes dioceses depois da reconquista, a origem e o percurso dos seus primeiros prelados, as fontes subsistentes de cada uso litúrgico e as suas características específicas, com referência à literatura especializada entretanto produzida. A exemplo do estudo pioneiro de Knud Ottosen, a metodologia assenta também numa ampla comparação das séries de responsórios e versos das Matinas de Defuntos e outras particularidades textuais e musicais de fontes locais e de fontes ibéricas e francesas seleccionadas. Em apêndice, são fornecidas listas exaustivas das fontes manuscritas e impressas dos usos de Braga, Évora e Santa Cruz, incluindo as respectivas localizações e referências bibliográficas relevantes. REQUIEM LOW MASS FOR TWO SERVERS The Requiem Mass is very ancient in its origin, being the predecessor of the current Roman Rite (i.e., the so- called “Tridentine Rite”) of Mass before the majority of the gallicanizations1 of the Mass were introduced. And so, many ancient features, in the form of omissions from the normal customs of Low Mass, are observed2. A. Among his many achievements: The Case for Clerical Celibacy (Ignatius Press), which documents that the celibate priesthood was mandated from the earliest days of the Church. Cardinal Stickler lives at the Vatican. The Tridentine Mass means the rite of the Mass which was fixed by Pope Pius V at the request of the Council of Trent and promulgated on December 5, 1570. This Missal contains the old Roman rite, from which various additions and alterations were removed. When it was promulgated, other rites were retained that had existed for at least 200 years. Therefore, is more correct to call this Missal the liturgy of Pope Pius V. Faith and Liturgy From the very beginning of the Church, faith and liturgy have been intimately connected. A clear proof of this can be found in the Council of Trent itself. -
