Issue #72 Summer / Fall 2008 Lars Bloch Interview (part 2) A Man, a Colt The MGM Rolling Road Show Latest DVD Reviews WAI! #72 THE SWINGIN’ DOORS April and May were months that took a number of well known actors of the Spaghetti western genre: Jacques Berthier, Robert Hundar, John Phillip Law and Tano Cimarosa were all well known names in the genre. Of course we should expect as much since these people are now well into their 70s and even 80s. Still in our minds they are young vibrant actors who we see over and over again on video and DVD. It’s hard to realize that it’s been 40+ years since Sergio Leone kicked off the Spaghetti western craze and launched a world wide revolution in film that we still see influencing films today. Hard to believe Clint Eastwood turned 78 on May 30th. Seems like only yesterday he was the ‘Man with No Name’ and starring in the first of the Leone films that launched the genre. Remember when Clint was criticized so badly as an actor and for the films he appeared in during the 60s and 70s. Now he’s revered in Hollywood because he’s outlived his critics. I guess we recognized a real star long before the critics did. A great idea came to Tim League’s mind in the launching of the “Rolling Road Show”, where films are actually shown where they were filmed. I wasn’t able to travel to Spain to see the Dollars trilogy but we have a nice review of the films and the experience by someone who was there. -

International Journal of Communication 7 (2013), 811–830 1932–8036/20130005 Media Conduction: Festivals, Networks, and Boundaried Spaces ROBERT MOSES PEASLEE Texas Tech University This article reports on extended qualitative fieldwork regarding media festivals, including those concerning both film and comic book culture. It is also an initial attempt to shape the trends and patterns suggested by this fieldwork into a theory of media conduction. My interest is in how the festival environment represents a kind of rift through which a normally hidden or out-of-reach area of meaningful activity becomes visible to those not already connected to the event, and how organizers use the value of this access to promote both their event(s) and the media persons and practices with which they stand in symbiotic relationship. The theory of media conduction attempts to account for the power discourses present in the space and time of the media festival, with particular reference to the era of synchronic, interactive, networked electronic communication technology, sometimes referred to as “Web 2.0.” Introduction This article is a report on extended qualitative fieldwork investigating the phenomenon of media festivals, particularly those related to both film and comic book culture. It is also an initial attempt to shape something like a theory of media conduction from the trends and patterns this fieldwork suggests. I define media conduction as movement of information due to a difference in level of access (from a high- access to a lower-access region) through a transmission medium (e.g., festivals, conventions, events) that simultaneously reifies the value of that access. -

This sort of study was grounded in the auteur theory—following authorship approaches in literature—and was invested in a consistency that justified the place of film authorship as a worthy pursuit in academia. In this study, however, I examine Mexican-American filmmaker Robert Rodriguez through a discursive analysis, unencumbered to textual analysis or even a chronological approach, with a look at the media discourse, Rodriguez’s own writings and interviews, and the pertinent scholarship. His debut award-winning debut feature, El Mariachi (1992), as well as the production diary that would soon follow, Rebel Without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker with $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player inspired a generation of filmmakers into making ultra-low (or microbudget) films. -
