Certainly in Italy, France, Germany and Russia too there are many beautiful St Nicholas’ churches, but a great number of them underwent heavy modernizations. On the contrary, if you look at the English St Nicholas’ churches you feel transported back to the age of William the Conqueror or Richard Lion’s Heart. Victoria County History of Cumbria Project: Work in Progress Interim Draft [Note: This is an incomplete, interim draft and should not be cited without first consulting the VCH Cumbria project: for contact details, see http://www.cumbriacountyhistory.org.uk/] Parish/township: KIRKANDREWS ON ESK Author: Fay V. Winkworth Date of draft: January 2013 KIRKANDREWS ON ESK: INTRODUCTION1 1. Description and location Kirkandrews on Esk is a large rural, sparsely populated parish in the north west of Cumbria bordering on Scotland. It extends nearly 10 miles in a north-east direction from the Solway Firth, with an average breadth of 3 miles. It comprised 10,891 acres (4,407 ha) in 1864 2 and 11,124 acres (4,502 ha) in 1938. 3 Originally part of the barony of Liddel, its history is closely linked with the neighbouring parish of Arthuret. The nearest town is Longtown (just across the River Esk in Arthuret parish). Kirkandrews on Esk, named after the church of St. Andrews 4, lies about 11 miles north of Carlisle. This parish is separated from Scotland by the rivers Sark and Liddel as well as the Scotsdike, a mound of earth erected in 1552 to divide the English Debatable lands from the Scottish. It is bounded on the south and east by Arthuret and Rockcliffe parishes and on the north east by Nicholforest, formerly a chapelry within Kirkandrews which became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1744. The border with Arthuret is marked by the River Esk and the Carwinley burn. 1 The author thanks the following for their assistance during the preparation of this article: Ian Winkworth, Richard Brockington, William Bundred, Chairman of Kirkandrews Parish Council, Gillian Massiah, publicity officer Kirkandrews on Esk church, Ivor Gray and local residents of Kirkandrews on Esk, David Grisenthwaite for his detailed information on buses in this parish; David Bowcock, Tom Robson and the staff of Cumbria Archive Centre, Carlisle; Stephen White at Carlisle Central Library.

Westminster Abbey A SERVICE TO MARK THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 ON AWARENESS SUNDAY Sunday 11th September 2011 6.30 pm Today we commemorate the tragic events in the United States that happened 10 years ago exactly, 11th September 2001, the day universally known as 9/11. Organised terrorists attacks took place in New York, Washington DC, and in Pennsylvania, with two passenger aeroplanes being flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre. The structures collapsed and hundreds of innocent people were killed— people of all races, nations, and religions. The loss of life was catastrophic and the aftermath for the survivors traumatic in the extreme. A poignant symbol of the tragedy was the total destruction of St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the street level of the World Trade Centre. A lifeline for immigrants arriving from Greece, the church had been a testimony to the American dream, its faith, and its faithfulness to the pledge of liberty and justice for all people. In spite of the horror, the response to unfolding events from both the emergency services and the people of the local community was instant, and many risked their lives for the sake of others. St Paul’s Episcopal Chapel immediately became the beacon of hope for the traumatised people of New York and remains a place of prayer and remembrance as thousands visit the site year after year. A memorial to the events of 9/11 is now being created at the site of the former World Trade Centre, an area now known as ‘Ground Zero’.

Highways Update Report – Area South Lead Officer: Mike Fear, Assistant Highway Service Manager Contact Details: County Roads - [email protected] Purpose of the Report The Report is to inform members of the work carried out by the County Highway Authority at the halfway stage through the financial year and what schemes are remaining on the work programme for the rest of the year. Recommendation That the Area South Committee notes the content of this report. Surface Dressing Weather this year has been fairly kind to our surface dressing program. It commenced in June and was completed through various phases by the end of August. After this time the road temperatures are too unpredictable to ensure there are no surface failures. Patching work has already been completed for next year’s surface dressing program which mainly concentrates on Class A and B roads. Surface Dressing is the practice of applying a bitumen tack coat to the existing road surface and rolling in stone chippings. Whilst this practice is not the most PR friendly, when carried out correctly it is highly effective and can bring significant improvements to the highway infrastructure. Verge Cutting Grass cutting this year has been difficult due to the rapid growth of vegetation and as you can appreciate; our works are largely governed by resource. With a highway network exceeding 3,500km in length, the size of the task is significant. The County Council therefore has a policy and procedures that are in place to ensure the work is carried out in the most safe, effective and economic way.
