I was elected into the position during the recent AGM together with secretary Pam Davis & treasurer Bruce Cameron. One of the first things we decided to do as a committee is to work out what our future plan will be for The Federation. The Folk environment is such a fluid and ever-evolving one and it’s important the Federation matches this movement and perhaps even leads it in some instances. We know there are many challenges ahead for us. There are a number of things we need to do in this State. We need to raise the profile of folk events and repre- sent them in a vibrant and fulsome manner. We need to ensure that the legacies of past and present elders in the folk movement are not only preserved but inspira- tional to younger folkies coming through. This is one of our great challenges. The elders tend to be ‘society and association’ conscious in the more established tradi- tions whereas our younger members (and essentially ‘potential’ members) have had both the gift and the challenge of living in this radically altering digital age. Association for them has, in many instances, morphed into the ‘virtual world’. Our challenge essentially is to ensure that we are relevant to both our folk elders and our folk youngsters (yes, I am one of the ‘elders’ J). The most important question we need to ask ourselves is how can we bridge the gap and bring these different age groups together in a way that is absolutely relevant to each of them? I went online to see if I could find a definition of ‘folk’ that made most sense to me and the online dictionary came up with the following: “relating to the traditional art or culture of a community or nation.” In Australia, other than our Indigenous tradi- tions (which are substantial in themselves), we have a nation sharing its social communities between close to 200 immigrant cultures. This gives us somewhere in the vicinity of 500 language groups in this vast country of ours (including the 300 or so Indigenous language groups, many of which are sadly no longer practised). In NSW we had over 70 Indigenous language groups, and we have over 120 ‘ancestral groups’ listed on the multiculturalnsw.id.com.au website. Over 20% of this State’s population speaks a language other than English at home. When you consider that roughly 25% of this State’s population was born overseas and that many more would include first, second and third-generation migrants, the need to focus on diversity in folk becomes absolutely clear. It is also an area that has been neglected and in some instances turned away from in the Aus- tralian folk movement. As the President of the Federation this is one aspect of our operations that I would really like to see changed. I would also like to see a greater participation of the many diverse cultures in our Federation. It is this diversity I firmly believe that lends vibrancy to any social grouping. I would sincerely welcome any comments and/or suggestions that you would like us to take into consideration as a Committee and to incorporate into future planning for the Federation. We are at an important social crossroad in our political and social history and whether or not ‘folk’ in all its incarnations follows or leads this is up to us, the folk practitioners. Let’s take the op- portunity with enthusiasm and do what we can to ensure that our relevance to society is embellished and not diminished. Let’s also take the opportunity to engage in the building of increased bridges between the various demographic and cultural groups in our community to strengthen our position in the arts and increase our profile in decisions made by government. I look forward to the coming year & our strategic plan outcome will be summarised for you in a coming edition of Cornstalk.
