Haunting harmonies on Irish low whistles, expressive and the innovative concertina, sensitivity and richness on guitar and piano and passionate vocals. The Badja River Quartete will take you on a journey from Scotland to Brittany, from Ireland to Northumbria. This imaginative and beautiful music combines the talents of Lainey Balsdon, Steve MacDonald, Jo Cresswell and Jane Harding. Three’s Company Three’s Company is the missing link between Buddy Holly, 12th Century Cathars, Pete Seeger and The Kinks. This vocal trio made up of Belinda Bennett, Christina Mimmocchi and Tom Bridges enjoy making vibrant harmonies and presenting old favourites. Folklore Rosie MacDonald (Mothers Of Intention), Steve MacDonald (Badga River Quartet) and Anthony Woolcott (Triantan)- three musical wanderers, playing a mix of traditional and contemporary folk. two guitars, three voices and a whole lot of love for good music and good company. Letting the music and verse tell their stories and taking us to a timeless place. Blue Goose In the late 1980’s Whistling Goose, one of Sydney’s favourite jug/folk/goodtime bands, came to an end after more than a decade of entertaining Sydney audiences. Blue Goose represents the renewal of the musical relationship between three of the members of Whistling Goose. It combines Sonia Bennett’s powerful vocals and guitar with the multi-instrumental musicianship of Max Gregory and Bruce Stavert and Andy Stavert on bass. Blue Goose brings together a broad range of musical experience and skill and a love of music in many guises. Their many original compositions, interspersed with refreshing interpretations of songs of many genres old and new, combine with a whimsical approach to playing that makes them fun and great to listen to. Sonia Bennett (vocals & guitar) - Sonia is one of Australia’s most celebrated singer/songwriters. Not only has she written and recorded many renowned songs such as ‘The Wollemi Pine’ and ‘Sydney Song’, she has also recorded settings of poems by Henry Lawson, Denis Kevans, Billy Wye and others. She has performed on radio and television many times over a career spanning 30 years. Max Gregory (blues harp, slide guitar, banjo & acoustic guitar) - Max has played folk/blues/jug band music since the 1960s backing various vocalists and in many bands. Bruce Stavert (piano, guitar, mandolin, ukulele & vocal harmonies) - Bruce has played a mixture of styles in folk/jug band/ bluegrass/rock/blues/jazz groups since the early 70s. Ralph Mitchell (bass, guitar & vocal harmonies) - Ralph teaches guitar and bass. He is also an experienced musician who plays a variety of styles including folk, blues, jazz and rock. • No. 420 Illawarra Folk Festival
Submission No 420 INQUIRY INTO THE MUSIC AND ARTS ECONOMY IN NEW SOUTH WALES Organisation: Illawarra Folk Festival Date Received: 2 July 2018 Legislative Council The Music and Arts Economy in NSW Introducing the Illawarra Folk Club, presenters of Folk Music in the Illawarra The Illawarra Folk Club Inc was established in 1979 as a not for profit organisation and has over this time run fortnightly Folk Music concerts in central Wollongong and throughout the Illawarra. We have run 33 annual Folk Festivals since 1986, initially at Jamberoo which we outgrew. The current version of the Illawarra Folk Festival attracts an aggregate 10,000 people with up to 12 stages over 4 days. It runs in January every year at the Bulli Raceway GBOTA site, the adjoining Bulli Showground and the Bulli Grevillia Park. This Festival attracts about 1500 on site campers and 400 volunteers giving a total of 5,000 hours of free help. The event puts $1.5 million into the local economy. We believe that this festival is the largest volunteer run festival in Australia In addition to the Illawarra Folk Festival we ran for a number of years a small one day festival on the Jamberoo to Robertson Road and since 2012 we also have run the smaller Folk by the Sea Festival at the Kiama Showground and Church Point precinct of Kiama. This event attracts 2,000 people over the 3 days including about 150 campers. Both events include a festival licensed bar. Both our festivals are wrist band entry only, for a day or for the entire festival.

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Illawarra Co-‐operatives: The irsF t One Hundred Years Abstract The hope nda promise of co-operative marketing were to return all profits fairly ot the producers and to control the price of dairy products through collective market power. Soon the South Coast and West Camden Co-op opened its own selling floors in Sussex Street, Sydney. Illawarra and Shoalhaven farmers immediately withdrew their consignments from ‘the system’ and sent their produce instead to the fledgling co-operative. On Mondays and Thursdays steamers arrived from Wollongong, Kiama and Shoalhaven. Carrier after carrier had to be engaged to convey the butter, bacon and cheese sent from the South Coast to the Co-op’s floor while many agents had nothing else to do but stand outside their doors and watch their business disappear, their carts returned empty from the wharf. The oC -op finished business on the evening of its opening day with all its consignments sold at a very good price. • Wollongong Major Events Strategy 2016-2020
WOLLONGONG MAJOR EVENTS STRATEGY 2016-2020 Prepared by Destination Wollongong In consultation with Wollongong City Council EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Major events acquisition is a core pillar in driving the visitor economy, which is an important growth enabler for a city in transition. The trend within tourism of taking “short breaks” works to Wollongong’s advantage, given its proximity to Sydney. Events are immediate and economic, providing instant return and opportunities for unskilled labour. Furthermore, they provide a mechanism for attracting visitors without the need for expensive infrastructure. Ideally, Wollongong should be competing with regions of similar size and proximity for major events – Geelong, Sunshine Coast and Newcastle – but, realistically, lacks the funding and leverage to do so. A snapshot of the 2012-15 Major Events Strategy revealed success in establishing a nimble business model, advocating changes to the events process, and engaging collaborative partners. Event acquisition saw a portfolio of 20-26 events created, the sports sector effectively mined, seed funding used to kick-start now sustainable initiatives, and signature events established. Considerations in preparing the for the 2016-2020 Major Events Strategy include Wollongong’s lack of a distinct destination brand within market, which should ideally take the form of a collaborative, multi- layered model that ultimately aligns with this and other relevant strategic documents. The mission is to increase visitation, enhance perceptions and engage the community by hosting major events that showcase Wollongong’s strengths. Key aims of the strategy are: (1) to achieve staged growth as a core pillar of the visitor economy; (2) deliver on reputational reward that complements Wollongong’s brand values; (3) align with the city’s strategic imperatives and product development aspirations; (4) secure staged investment in major events to rival comparable regional cities; and (5) demonstrate the most “user- friendly” application process of any Council in Australia.
