There are literally dozens of subgenres—and many subgenres within those subgenres —throughout the heavy metal lexicon, and it would take a lifetime to become fully versed in all of them. Here we zoom in on five unique and compelling lesser-known metal subgenres that aren't obvious entry points for the average headbanger, but every fan of aggressive music should be familiar with these sounds. Daniel Dumile, alias MF DOOM, lived a thousand lives and his career was a succession of false starts and bright flashes. Before passing away on the 31st of October, 2020, Dumile had been a young virtuoso rapper welcomed with open arms by the music industry, then an outcast that sneaked back onto the scene through the back door after years of wandering (now masked), the 'go-to-guy' of independent rap during the 2000s and then some kind of Indie messiah as dubbed by Thom Yorke and Flying Lotus. Elusive, whimsical, a trickster and a money maker, DOOM rewrote the rules of rap music, rubbed people up the wrong way and paved the way for a whole generation of MCs. With the mixtapes Monster, Beast Mode and 56 Nights which were released only weeks apart between October 2014 and March 2015, Future took back the reigns of his career and marked a turning point for contemporary rap music. Let us look back on the chaotic rise of the most important and fascinating rapper of recent times. The 25 Best No Limit Albums. It’s hard to believe that No Limit Records ’ stronghold on the rap game was 15 long years ago. Some of you might be too young to remember No Limit’s heydey, but in the late '90s, Master P and his legion of soldiers ruled rap with an iron fist. From 1997 through 2000, the label dropped 51 albums, making Master P hip-hop’s ultimate hustler. It seemed as if everything he touched turned to gold. But music wasn’t enough for the budding entrepreneur, as he expanded his empire to hawk movies, sneakers, clothes and toys. No Limit dabbled in professional wrestling (for the WCW), started a sports management agency (15 years before Jay-Z ), and P even attempted to play in the NBA. And to think, this all started from a $10,000 insurance settlement check from P’s grandfather. But while the outside ventures brought in beaucoup bucks and helped elevate the brand, P’s bread and butter was always the music. Thanks to artists like Snoop Dogg , Mystikal , Silkk The Shocker and P himself, the label was able to sell over 80 million records worldwide. And thanks to his monumental distribution deal with Priority Records —where he was able to keep 75% of the profits (wholesale price) for every album sold— he made an estimated $350 million dollars ($160 million of that in 1998 alone) over the span of his career. In fact, No Limit albums were generating so much income that P never had to tour—which is the way most artists today make their money. The craziest part about the label’s success was that the sales didn’t come from heavy radio or video airplay—people were just incredibly loyal to the brand. Artists on No Limit had no promotion other than magazine ads and the tank logo and ‘Executive Producer: Master P’ tag on the back of their colorful albums.

As is the case with many of Master P's releases, the real star of the album is the production. Handled mainly by production wizard Beats by the Pound, the album has an original style that manages to shake the cobwebs off of No Limit's trademark sound. His technical mastery makes cliché- riddled tracks, like the playful "That's My Hoe" and "Ya Heard Me," sound fresh. On "Straight to the Dance Floor," he manages to get away with sampling Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" and make it his own. As for Soulja Slim, he doesn't just come along for the ride -- he adds his own unique style to the mix. While he spends plenty of time rapping about thug life in tracks like "I'm a Fool" and "What You Came Fo'," he also seems to have grown a bit of a conscience on "Soulja for Life."
