Circling the book are the first three whatsoever things are pure, words, in Latin, of the University motto: Quaecumque sunt vera whatsoever things are lovely, (What soever things are true). The outer border of the seal carries the name of the University and the date of its founding. This seal, whatsoever things are of good report; which remains Northwestern’s official signature, was approved by if there be any virtue, the Board of Trustees on December 5, 1890. and if there be any praise, The full text of the University motto, adopted on June 17, 1890, is think on these things. from the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Philippians, chapter 4, verse 8 (King James Version).

  • Chinese Herbal Medicines As a Source of Molecules with Anti-Enterovirus
Wang et al. Chin Med (2016) 11:2 DOI 10.1186/s13020-016-0074-0 Chinese Medicine REVIEW Open Access Chinese herbal medicines as a source of molecules with anti‑enterovirus 71 activity Mengjie Wang1,2, Ling Tao1,2,3 and Hongxi Xu1,2* Abstract Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), which sometimes leads to severe neurological disease and death in the Asia–Pacific region. In Chinese medicine, HFMD is caused mainly by an accumulation of damp-heat and toxicity in the body. No effective drugs are currently available for the treatment and prevention of EV71 infection. This review summarizes the potential Chinese herbal extracts and isolated com- pounds with antiviral activity against EV71 and their clinical applications, especially those categorized as heat-clearing and detoxifying. Background with considerable side effects in infants and children Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a non-enveloped, positive-sense, [10, 11]. Pleconaril, an antipicornavirus capsid-binding single-stranded RNA virus that is 7.4 kb in length and agent, shows moderate efficacy in anti-EV71 treatment, belongs to the family Picornaviridae [1]. Infection with but cannot reduce the cytopathic effect (CPE) induced EV71 commonly causes mild hand, foot, and mouth dis- by some EV71 strains [12, 13]. Rupintrivir, an inhibitor of ease (HFMD), which sometimes leads to serious neuro- human rhinovirus (HRV) 3C protease, specifically binds logical complications such as aseptic meningitis, brain to the 3C protease of EV71, inhibits the replication of stem encephalitis, pulmonary edema, and poliomyelitis- EV71 in vitro, and strongly contains the spread of EV71 like paralysis, and eventually causes death especially in infection in vivo [14].
