Biology Oral Presentation Abstracts B1. Summary of Previous and New Records of the Least Darter (Etheostoma microperca) in Arkansas Brian K Wagner, Mark D Kottmyer, Michael E Slay Arkansas Game and Fish Commission The Least Darter, Etheostoma microperca, has an extremely limited distribution in Arkansas and is designated as a species of greatest conservation need by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. It is restricted in the state to the Illinois River basin in Benton and Washington counties and was first documented in the state in 1938 in Wildcat Creek west of Springdale. Additional discoveries in 1960, 1973, 1981, and 1982 documented its general distribution in the state prior to this study. A 1997 study documented the persistence of the species in 2 of the historic streams. Field sampling in 2004-2005 and 2010-2011, provided more concentrated sampling efforts in the basin. Herein we report on the state of previously documented populations, document additional populations in the vicinity of previously reported ones, and document a population discovered in an additional sub-basin. These efforts update the status of this rare member of the state ichthyofauna and greatly improve the resolution of the distribution of this species within Arkansas. Abstract ID: 47 B2. Pruning of Select Native Plants Courtesy of Jane Gulley, Arkansas Master Gardener Pruning rules of thumb: Shrubs If they bloom once in spring, prune after blooming. Otherwise prune late February or early March. That generally means they bloom on new wood. If they bloom on new wood you can give periodic haircuts for wild branches and it won’t hurt the bush or blooms for next year. Wildflowers Real early spring bloomers leave alone. Many of them are ephemerals and will be gone shortly. For those that are early but not ephemeral, you can cut back the foliage when they look ratty, e.g. Columbine, Amsonia, and Penstemon. If the plant blooms mid-summer you can cut it by half early; when it is 6 inches cut to 3 or 4 inches. If the plant blooms late summer you can give it the early cut PLUS a second cut mid-summer; this might delay flowering a week or so, and some blooms might be a little smaller, but it won’t flop and will be sturdier. The second cut should be about a third, not more than half. Keep records of what you do! Write it down and take a picture so you can review and revise each year. If something doesn’t work, don’t it again. 1. Alexanders, Heart–leaved (Zizia aperta) – trim stems to basal clump after flowering. Remove unwanted seedlings when small. 2. Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection.
